DOSBox Staging Basics
Today: Reverb and chorus
One exciting new audio feature is the ability to add reverb (the emulation of real acoustic spaces) and chorus effects to any mixer channel. This can add a lot of atmosphere to dry-sounding synth soundtracks (typically OPL music) and elevate them to a whole new level! Enabling reverb and chorus processing is especially useful for headphone-listening.
Reverb
The quickest way to enable the reverb effect globally is to put reverb = on in the [mixer] config section. While the default setting works well with most games, it’s recommended to experiment with the five available reverb presets to find the optimal setting for each game.
Chorus
Another way to add a sense of space to the sound is by enabling the chorus effect. This adds stereo movement and increases the perceived stereo width. To enable it, just put chorus = on into the [mixer] config section, or select one of the three predefined chorus strength presets (light, normal, and strong).

You can combine chorus and reverb. The below recordings showcase how crossfeed, reverb, chorus, and output stage filters can work in tandem to give old DOS game soundtracks a new life.

Today: Crossfeed
Listening to audio material on headphones where certain sounds are only present in either the left or the right channel can be a rather distracting and unpleasant experience. This is most noticeable on certain Dual OPL game soundtracks and tracker music (e.g. MOD, XM, S3M, IT, etc.).
Professional headphone amplifiers like pictured below implement a feature called "crossfeed" to eliminate this problem.
The crossfeed feature in DOSBox Staging does the same; by enabling crossfeed in the [mixer] section, a certain percentage of the left channel is mixed into the right, and vice versa. The default crossfeed strength is 40% which is a good general setting, but you can provide a custom percentage value as well (e.g. crossfeed = 55).
The amount of crossfeed can be fine-tuned per individual channels via mixer commands; please type MIXER /? in the DOSBox prompt for further details.

Is Steam Play broken? From today none of the games runing before by using Proton works on Steam.
The native Linux games are working.
Other non-native games are running by using Heroic/Wine8-8(staging).
I'm using Manjaro.
@Stark9837 Steam works like a charm, thanks to Proton. Most (of my) games run great out of the box, you can always check protondb.com. Notable exceptions are some competitive multiplayer games with Anti-Cheat engines like Destiny2. I had my Steam Library on a separate SSD and didn't even have to re-install. You can link existing steam libraries on other disks or partitions. GoG and Epic games are covered by Heroic Launcher. For anything else there is Lutris/Wine 😄 #linuxgaming ❤️

Today: Sound card output filter emulation
Most DOS-era sound cards feature an output low-pass filter (and sometimes a high-pass filter too) that play an important role in giving their sound its character. DOSBox Staging can accurately emulate these analog output stage filters for all supported sound devices.

Filters are enabled by default for all small-speaker audio systems (PC Speaker, PS/1 Audio, Tandy, and the various LPT DAC options). Depending on the particular device, these filters either emulate the analog output filters of the original device, or the sound coming out of a small band-limited speaker in an acoustic environment. Either way, the result is a more period-accurate and pleasant listening experience, especially on headphones.
Advanced users can specify custom filter settings for any of the supported sound devices. You can specify either a high-pass filter, a low-pass filter, or both at the same time.

on windows, my cpu runs ten degrees hotter on average, overheats and throttles, everything stutters frequently, it never seems to reach its highest clock speeds, and can't even handle running an older game and a single x264 encode without dropping frames constantly, and even without any encoding, the experience is markedly worse in newer games on their own
somehow, thanks to microsoft, I can legitimately say that my choice of operating system is a crucial part of my cooling system
and people wonder why I would rather abandon games and software with no linux/proton compatibility than dual boot for them, no matter how good they might be

Today: Case-insensitive paths handling
Paths passed to commands mount, imgmount, and audio track paths in .cue and .ins files are now treated as case-insensitive, regardless of the operating system.
Fixes numerous issues with running DOS games on Linux or FreeBSD. This change alone corrects the vast majority of Windows-only DOS game releases on GOG or Steam (such as e.g. Settlers II, Redneck Rampage, or Mortal Kombat series) - users no longer need to manually adjust the paths after unpacking games from Windows installer.
This should significantly improve the quality of Lutris installers as well.

The game trainer site/service Cheat Happens tends to make video manuals, which is annoying and ponderous.
However this one (for Steam Deck, but relevant to any Linux) both introduced me to ProtonUp-Qt, a helpful upgrade and management tool for third-party Proton versions, and provides a really nice overview of how to use SteamTinkerLaunch to run extra stuff in the same Proton bottle as the game you're running.
Their trainers transpire to be pretty good too, will probably save me some decompiling, and are looking likely to justify a lifetime subscription for our household.

It’s a #foss 6dof racing game with a #Newtonian flight model similar to #EliteDangerous.
It does have a #Linux version but the world gen lib is single threaded on Linux so Proton may be a better choice for now.
It also features access to full ship telemetry and head tracking including OpenTrack via UDP thanks to my nagging 🤪
No idea about VR. Apparently it works but I can’t test that.
