@jmcrookston I’ll be frank; I was just waiting to see what would happen to his attitude after he finally got #Covid (in March?). Despite a case of #LongCovid that fortunately resolved (he’s one of the lucky ones) that at least got him talking about that more, I was disappointed but not surprised. I really think this virus does something to the human brain. (Maybe to his, maybe not, but attitudes change.)

Actually, I know it does. We both know. There have been studies showing it for 2 years now.

Some 45 (-4) counties ≥ 100% capacity per HHS data.

Reporting ≥ 90%: 167 (-62)—near 7% of those with any capacity. This includes surge and overflow beds: near full can mean E/Rs with day-long wait times.

For counties w/ ICUs—over one in six are full or near full.

Map: Adult Hospital & ICU Capacity by County
Data: U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services, American National Standards Institute
As of: Nov 25, 2023

[ beadsland on Ko-fi ]

Shows a color scale of 7-day average adult inpatient beds occupied over 7-day average adult inpatient beds staffed for 48 contiguous states only. Scale runs from black (well over 140%), to purple (120%), to red (80%), to orange (50%), to yellow (10%). Counties for which no hospitals/beds are reported are represented by colored hatch marks, reflecting state-level reported capacity.

Patterns of black circles represent counties where adult ICUs are near full; circles are filled in where adult ICUs are entirely full. Sparse grey dots show areas where no ICU beds are reported.

Most of the map is dark red-orange, with splotches of lighter orange-yellow in the interior, mostly in the Rockies. Black indicators heavily pepper the map.

Weird that this important information has been lost. Nowadays many consider that to be nonsense - only a few scientist and medics know that that is not the case. They call on people to spread this information.

And I bet they leaned on their own friendly neighbourhood German Health Minister to say "Hey we're finally going to admit Long Covid is real, and it's actually something to fear, so go get vaccinated because that's all we're willing to do for you and we need to stem these billions of losses Pfizer is dealing with." https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/pfizers-groton-connecticut-site-next-line-layoffs-amid-global-35-billion-cost-savings

What a timeline we live in when we are having to actively avoid healthcare settings because going there might be the thing that kills you.

My partner has an eye infection thing, again. Had it in the summer too. And his rash is back. This has been a thing for some time now, along with fatigue, forgetfulness, pains and aches. He also had severe back pain this last week for two days, the week before it was knee pain. He probably has #LongCovid. He is high risk. He is also my everything.

Going to the plague filled local clinic just feels so risky. There are no masks, no vaccines, no social distancing, no ventilation. Nothing. There also seems to be no help or sympathy for this.

I hate it that this is what the world learnt from this. That we can't even protect the vulnerable at all?

This is a friendly reminder that any muffin recipe can be easily made into a loaf recipe. Just extend your baking time.

Most loaves/quick breads take around 50-70 mins, but paleo recipes may take a little longer due to density and moisture. Toothpick test works for all.

This drastically shortens on clean up and prep on both ends. You can also break your recipe up into stages. Mix your dry ingredients, then take a rest before you do the wet and bake.

Hang in there long haulers and tired warriors. You deserve a tasty treat.

Re: Taking the Win over COVID-19

After two years that necessitated lockdowns, travel bans, school closures, mask mandates, and nearly a million deaths, nearly every American finally has the tools to protect themselves from this virus. It's time for Democrats to take credit for ending the COVID crisis phase of the COVID war, point to important victories like vaccine distribution and providing economic stability to Americans, and fully enter the rebuilding phase that comes after any war.

Below we lay out some strategic thoughts for Democrats positioning themselves on COVID-19 after nearly two years of the pandemic:

Declare the crisis phase of COVID over and push for feeling and acting more normal. Thanks to Democrats, we are nowhere near where we were two years, or even one year ago. Democrats have a tremendous opportunity to claim an incredible, historic success - they vaccinated hundreds of millions of people prevented the economy from going into freefall, kept small businesses from going under, and got people back to work safely. Because of President Biden and Democrats, we CAN safely return to life feeling much more normal - and they should claim that proudly
Recognize that people are "'worn out" and feeling real harm from the years-long restrictions and take their side. Most Americans have personally moved out of crisis mode. Twice as many voters are now more concerned about COVID's effect on the economy (49%) than about someone in their family or someone they know becoming infected with the coronavirus (24%). Two-thirds of parents and 80% of teachers say the pandemic caused learning loss, and voters are overwhelmingly more worried about learning loss than kids getting COVID

Six in ten Americans describe themselves as *worn out" by the pandemic. The more we talk about the threat of COVID and onerously restrict people's lives because of it, the more we turn them against us and show them we're out of touch with their daily realities
Acknowledge COVID still exists and likely will for a long time. We are not advising that Democrats talk like the Republicans that have largely ignored the pandemic, even pre-vaccine. Declaring a return to the "new normalcy" does not
mean ignoring that people will continue to get it, that we shouldn't be responsible, or that we should turn our backs on the medical community that is treating those
sick and developing the therapeutics that will save lives. Instead, it means recognizing that the threat of COVID is no longer what it was even a year ago and therefore should not be treated as such - shutdowns, masks, and lockdowns were meant to save lives when there was not yet a vaccine that could do that. Voters know we now have the tools in the toolkit to be responsible in combatting and living with COVID - vaccines and boosters to minimize ilness, and masks and social distancing around vulnerable groups

Don't set "COVID zero" as the victory condition. Americans also don't think victory is COVID Zero. They think the virus is here to stay, and 83% say the pandemic will be over when it's a mild illness like the flu rather than COVID being completely gone, and 55% prefer that COVID should be treated as an endemic disease.

This article is well worth a read.

It’s long past time for media/public health to communicate about the significant risk of life altering events after COVID infections. Every time I see an article downplaying the risks of COVID by focusing only on hospitalizations or deaths (which are still a significant risk, to be clear)…I think there’s little wonder people aren’t taking precautions anymore.

Pediatric staffing never recovered to pre-omicron levels. Rather, over one in six pediatric beds reported May of 2022: now missing.

PICU Capacity Level (not shown): 73%.

Weekly average ~95 PICU beds were covid patients.

Dotted lines indicate historical and current Hospitals Surveyed (84%), Pediatric Capacity Level (74%) and Critical Staffing Level (11%). First has fallen off as psychiatric and rehabilitation hospitals have gone to once-annual reporting; second is the ratio of total reported occupied pediatric beds to total reported staffed pediatric beds, nationally; last the ratio of hospitals with pediatric beds reporting critical staffing shortages as a share of those that answered said question either 'yes' or 'no'.

Capacity was climbing toward 55K, with climbing occupancy, before plummeting to under 10K in Jan '22. Feb '22 saw gain toward 45K; above in May of that year, before trending down to now below 40K.

Capacity Level has been elevated since independence from the virus was declared three summers ago—as fewer & fewer professionals have been available to staff hospital beds.

Critical Staffing Level, already at 2021 levels, has been further elevated for near a year—with over one in nine reporting hospitals at critical shortage.

On current status on Long #Covid research. 386 trials on #PostCovid are underway, but only 94 of those are interventional "...and only 12 trials were testing pharmacological interventions; the rest were testing the effects of food supplements, psychological support, acupuncture and other non-drugs"

Long covid has taken me back, lungs not working well, heart trying hard to compensate, awake 3 hours then asleep for 1 hr, except at night when this reverses. Thankful that I don't also have brain fog. #covid #LongCovid

Census Bureau latest updated early Nov—still no word on next release date.

As more and more folk experience Long Covid, fewer & fewer have been staffing our hospitals.

Household Pulse Survey (HPS) is an Internet questionnaire…by…Census Bureau…includes questions regarding “any symptoms lasting 3 months or longer that you did not have prior to having coronavirus or COVID-19.” [Note] that the list of long-term symptoms, provided for this question, may not reflect all sequelae of covid infection, e.g., systemic organ damage or increased susceptibility to subsequent infections and other adverse health outcomes.

NCHS uses HPS responses to estimate incidence of [LC] in adult population. For purposes of this chart, we assume that U.S. under 18 population (22% of total) meet criteria for [LC] at half the rate of adults.

*Call for contributions from comrades*

We are looking for contributions for a new zine trying to document what it feels like to still be #COVIDing, pushed into social isolation, while just about everyone else has normalized #COVID19. Whether out of caution or because of pre-existing conditions, disabilities, #LongCOVID, we think it is important to communicate how the current situation affects many of us living under the neoliberal system of individualised responsibility.

A shard of a broken record with a sticker on it that reads: "Sorry. I've explained too many times why i still wear a mask" with a QR-Code leading to our zine: "An Open Letter to our Comrades".

“the tremendous surge in respiratory virus infections relative to prior years does, indeed, have a scientifically valid explanation: Sars-CoV-2 infection causing immune system dysfunction.

As we face an early increase in respiratory virus infections and heightened severity of these infections “white lung syndrome” filling pediatric emergency rooms around the northern hemisphere in early December a full year later, finally, the hypothesis of “Immunity Debt” is finally falling flat.”

Something I don't see discussed often about #LongCovid is the slow decline path. My kid was just kinda tired & sick-ish for the first 5 months post infection. Then pain & extreme fatigue began. Another 5 months to wheelchair bound & unable to go to school.

Hello Fediverse, hello Bits&Baeume,

I’ve moved recently, time for a (re)introduction — and a heartfelt Thank You! to @ben

I am a writer, copywriter, online editor, and I generally write a lot; I design websites with plain HTML/CSS/JS or using WordPress and other CMS; occasionally I work as a speaker, podcast producer, sound designer — to mention the most important bits.

My blog: https://wernerprise.com/blog (mostly German, but I am considering making it bilingual at some point.)

Climate catastrophe is on my mind, degrowth close to my heart; capitalism needs a short leash!

Also, I still take SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 very seriously. Thus:

#covid #CovidIsNotOver #Covid19 #LongCOVID #LongCovidKids #CovidIsAirborne

We're not living in fear, we're living in science and compassion- based reality. We're living as if we're all in danger, because we are. We're living as if those most in danger have value, because we do. We're living as if living requires interdependence, because it does. Wwe're living as if interdependence is also an opportunity to love, because it is. We're living as if love was a verb, because it is. We're living as if we love ourselves and one another, because we do. @access.ecology

Chronic fatigue syndrome – or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) – is the elephant in the long COVID room. For the past three years, much of the media and discussion around long COVID has treated the post-viral condition as an entirely new illness, a view that has been reflected in its research; scientists from around the world have scrambled to study the disease from scratch.

But if ME had been studied more thoroughly – or even just believed – years ago, much of the foundational work of long COVID research may already have been achieved. That’s certainly the belief of many of those suffering from ME, who often live exceptionally stationary lives due to their condition. Some are bed-bound, quite literally, for decades.

“Half of long COVID symptoms are basically equivalent to ME symptoms,” says Chris Ponting, a professor at the University of Edinburgh’s Medical Research Council Human Genetics Unit and lead investigator of its Decode ME project.
