Anyone else in the past month had external spinning drives slow down your Mac? Like using spotlight, it has to wait for the drive to wake up before kicking in. And with auto svae in certain apps. I’ve been using Amphetamine to keep the drive awake, but it seems like it doesn’t work anymore.

Osoby biorące udział w beta testach systemów od Apple mogą dziś zainstalować drugą wersję RC macOS Sonoma.
Jeśli jesteście deweloperami lub zapisaliście się do publicznych beta testów, w Ustawieniach systemowych czeka na Was aktualizacja macOS Sonoma.
To już druga wersja RC (Release Candidate), która ma przygotować ten system na publiczną premierę. Ta, według planów Apple, ma wyznaczoną datę na 26 września, czyli za niespełna tydzień.
Oczywiście nie należy się w tej wersji spodziewać już żadnych nowości względem pierwszej RC. Apple dopieszcza co może, wyłapuje jeszcze błędy i optymalizuje działanie systemu.

Final Cut Pro, das Video-Schnittprogramm von Apple für den Mac. Seit ich die App vor mehr als drei Jahren kaufte, erhalte ich kostenlose Updates von Apple. Kein Abo, nur ein einmaliger Kauf. So muss das sein. Zwar hat die premium App damals 270 Euro gekostet, doch sie ist jeden Penny wert und wird zuverlässig von Apple aktualisiert und angepasst, sobald ein neues macOS herauskommt.

@Vilian For indie development it's also a good choice if you care about mobile platforms. You can have one computer to make all the development.
For older Macs on Intel procesors, you can natively install Windows. Newer ones can run ARM Windows 11 under VM, which might be enough, at least for making builds. Cross-compilation is an option too.

@Vilian When you have a Mac, you can develop for iOS, Android & macOS out of the box, without any "tricks" or cross compilation.
Especially those first two platforms are very important for gamedev - as mobile gaming is *huuuge*
All major engines & frameworks are available natively for the Mac: Unity (which have roots on the Mac itself! Unity was an engine for OS X only initially!), Unreal Engine (despite legal fight between Epic and Apple), Godot + bazilion smaller ones.
@Vilian I must disagree - it's really hard to expect a company that is evolving their own platform for almost 40 years, to allow development for it on other platforms. For what purpose? I don't expect to be able to make native Windows apps on the Mac…
Godot does have a mature Mac port for years, no problem here. It's a first-class platform for Godot AFAIK.
Macs are maybe not great for *gaming* - but they're very good platform to actually *make games* 😉

Since (I think) I upgraded to Mac OS Monterey, when I open Preview on a set of image files, it defaults to showing them in order "None". To see them sorted, I have to right-click on the thumbnails, then select "Sort By" -> "Name".
How can I have it sort by name as its default (as I am sure used to be the case)?

What do people use for #bittorrent on #Mac? I am currently using Vuze, but it's so super spammy. The only reason I manage to use it without it installing all sorts of spammy features is that they all appear to be blocked by my pi-hole. Nothing seems that great.

As a heads up; If you have an Apple Silicon #Mac, and you're running #Sonoma, then Whisky will let you install the Windows Steam client, giving you access to those 32bit games you thought you'd lost.
As a result, I can once again play Portal, as well as a two player game that @Troggie wants to try out that's Windows only.

Nach kurzer Suche war klar, dass er den #SearchBaron auf seinem Rechner hatte. Der leitet die Anfragen über einige Drittseiten schließlich zu Bing um.
Verschiedene Webseiten empfahlen im Aktivitätsmonitor nach auffälligen Prozessen zu suchen. Keine erklärte sinnvoll, was ein auffälliger Prozess wäre.Und nun?

Basically just shrink the padding for all of them. I don’t need ANY other functionality, no hiding icons for example. Just more compact padding.

So I know I shouldn't expect more, but I was just really trying hard to get the hang of the new Books app on the Mac. And I just can't. After a chapter of the new Night Angel book, it would stop reading. That's fine, I'd do the read all command and it'd continue. But then it gets to a point where things break, and the first sentence of the paragraph repeats itself, and the chapter isn't even a part of the "book contents" element anymore. I just... I don't even have it in me to try to write out feedback that's detailed enough to be "actionable." Maybe someone with more patience can do that. Anyway I know that Windows doesn't have an EPub reader or books app of its own. I get it. But my goodness, Apple is *supposed* to be better than this. Thank goodness I have multiple systems. And yes, I know we have Voice Dream Reader or Speech Central on the Mac. But on the iPhone for many, many years, I didn't *need* any of that. It felt so much better back then. On iOS 5 or 6 when I could read through a whole book with no issues. And I did just that. I was all into Dark Shadows back then, so read a few books in that universe. It was one of my first iTunes purchases, and my iPod Touch read it perfectly.

Remember when you had to plug in your #iPod to sync with #iTunes? That's basically how I use my #AppleWatch and #iPhone today: My iPhone is the hardware-iTunes I use to manage my #Apple Watch, which is the replacement for my iPod. I hope some time soon we'll get Apple Watches that no longer need an iPhone to be managed. I'd be ok with setting it up via iPad or Mac, but I really don't want to own a #Smartphone anymore. My dream setup would be an Apple Watch, an iPad Mini, and a #Mac.

Yay, I got the Macintosh Classic II (graciously given by @mediaarchaeologylab ) repaired! Still some stuff to do on it but it actually functions as a computer now. Excited to do some Pascal and HyperCard!

Since it's basically impossible to search for anything about classic Macintoshes without getting SEO sludge about modern Macs, does anyone know how I can get files onto this Macintosh Classic II running System 7.1?
I only have USB floppy drives that can't seem to handle Mac format discs. Despite the Mac running System 7 it doesn't seem to have the “PC File Sharing Extension” (but does have just a normal “File Sharing Extension”?) and does just prompt me to reformat when inserting a PC floppy.
I notice there's XMODEM and Kermit extensions along with “Serial Tool” extension so I was thinking I could transfer the PC File Sharing Extension over a serial<->USB adapter but apparently the file Sharing Setup control panel is also missing? Like the “File Sharing Monitor” says I need to enable it in Sharing Setup but I don't see that listed in control panels, and when File->Sharing in finder offers to open Sharing Setup for me nothing happens.
I unfortunately don't have any way to directly hook up to the IDE hard drive either.
if you use #apple devices (like me, in part) PLEASE update your version of iOS/iPadOS/MacOS, preferably right now.
it will take less than two minutes (depending on your internet connection) and you can go touch some grass while it does.
this patches an actively exploited bug used by cop surveillance software.
edit: You can also enable Lockdown mode (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212650) which provides a lot of extra hardening which can be useful for a lot of people despite the scary warnings! (ty for the reminder @wednesday)
