I submitted my first academic paper/poster today. It took me nearly 3 months to prepare, and I am pretty proud of the results. Regardless of if it gets accepted, I am still planning to attend the conference-- but it'd be pretty sweet to also present to some of the best in the cognitive science space on my research about hackers. Once I make it past the IRB, I can start preparing to begin this project early next year. My hope is to be about 3/4ths the way done before I present so I can update the poster with preliminary results.

I got some really helpful questions/feedback last week, so I'll have some new thoughts to share today.

Last night’s birdlife WA speaker night introduced me to a database of partially annotated bird calls. This is going to be VERY useful the next time I am trying to learn a bird’s calls!

I'm a computer scientist, bioinformatician and sometimes applied mathematician, using and developing machine learning methods for biology and health care. I mostly work on genomics data, but also on small organic molecules and electronic health records.

A while back I asked for references about gene regulatory network models and how they relate to neural networks and others.
I'm still exploring this topic, but I wanted to share back a really cool paper I found: https://sci-hub.st/10.1111/evo.12337
This paper argues that "gene networks evolve like neural networks learn," and has some very fun examples demonstrating how to do traditional machine learning using model gene regulatory networks as a medium.
It's hardly the final word on the topic, but I'm excited to see folks actively exploring how learning theory might apply to genetics! Seems very promising.

Maybe it's because I'm in the field that is causing this mess, but things seem truly grim. I really hope that the US takes it's head out of it's ass soon and regulates things like crazy. Ideally I think it should be treated like nuclear science research and keep the proliferation of this hazardous crap minimal. But alas, I have little hope right now.
It’s really hard for me with my background in Machine Learning research to stand reading the news these days. I want to scream “‘AI’ IS A SCAM” on a rooftop, but would anyone really hear me? I really hate the way my field has been polluted by profit seeking corporations spewing haphazard marketing. It makes me feel dirty thinking about contributing to the field now. It seems like the best I can do is be _that person_ at Thanksgiving dinner and sound like a conspiracy theorist telling people to not trust anything involving “AI”.

I read an article this weekend that was talking about #LLMs - I've used #ChatGPT a bit and it's been quite helpful, particularly for quickly writing code. Though it inevitably needs some rewriting. I would be interested in trying to out some of the open source models to see how they compare.

I want to pull the user's favorites and run them through a #machineLearning #classifier of some sort.
Then when I pull their Timeline I can compare each post to their favorites and determine a similarity score.
I envision a sort of slider that lets them set a threshold of "favoriteness" to filter by; posts that are unlikely to be favorites will be hidden.
It's obvious that the 1980s pop singer Den Harrow was an enlightened tech visionary, predicting the AI and ChatGPT revolution…

I've been recently mystified by sentence embeddings in language models. A bit of a 💡 moment for me reading this article, "the rows of the intermediate weight matrix is the embedding we are looking for [...] This process is exactly what embedding is: as we start training this model with the training data generated above, we would expect the row space of this weight matrix to encode meaningful semantic information from the training data."
