@ThatOneSeong there's a whole art to this, and it can be super subtle. A great example are #Roomba s. They are *lovingly* engineered, and incredibly repairable.

Car battery died (could not hold voltage). I replaced the it with a new one in the car.
I thought I could use it at least to power my speaker. Nope, charges "to full" in like a minute, and then (sipping a few watts) goes from 12V to below 9V in a couple minutes, I can watch the voltage drop live.

The #Linux command line (GUIs too), needs controlled language. A standard set of words that mean only one thing, similar to #Catepillar or #Aircraft #Maintenance #English.
-i, --install, install = install
-u, --uninstall, uninstall = uninstall
etc.
The last is particularly troublesome, as utilities use -r, -e, --uninstall, --remove, --erase, etc.
I'm sure this would be tied up in committee for decades, but the need is there.

5️⃣ While implementing and adapting existing (in some cases cutting-edge) tools and frameworks w/ emphasis on open source, there was less emphasis (or at least mentioning) of participation in maintenance or shaping the long-term sustainability of said tools, which goes back to 2️⃣ and means that maybe just a bit more intersection w/ communities focused on #digipres & #OSS development is needed. #Feminist theories and principles of care were mentioned multiple times, but the aspect of #care vis-a-vis #maintenance could be developed further as a practical expression of the point made in 1️⃣.

If we were to purchase a new car, throw all the stuff from the old car in there, and say we maintained the old car

But for websites, this purchasing of new sites (redoing) has kind of become the main approach to #maintenance
Then unsurprisingly, we end up knowing little about website #maintainability (or less than we may like to think)
Some past thoughts, specifically on the value of limiting redos:
In our profession, it’s common to work on an unfamiliar codebase. It happens every time one joins a new project or even needs to work on a previously untouched part in big ones
Keeping content 'just in case' is not free. You have to pay in time, attention and money for:
- monitoring it
- checking it
...or pay the cost of harming your SEO, service failure, reputational damage of not doing those things.
