For my #maker friends, I love ACM (aluminum composite material).
Cuts well, can use snips to trim it to complex shapes, is cheap, and CNC routes really well. Only thing you can't do is laser it.
I really like making enclosure panels for stuff that I think needs more pep than acrylic or 3d printed plastic, and where straight up metal is overkill.

I printed a new mold & deckle. Embedded magnets stick the two parts together. I can now make slightly larger paper.

Two of my little projects. The RP Engine is a Raspberry Pi powered PC Engine box with a CD drive so it can boot actual PC engine CDs using RetroArch. I also intended to make a version of the base that could hold the PC Engine controller to USB adaptor from the second picture. On the left is the RT Engine, the recreated LT. Quite a bit chunkier than the original due to me wanting to use unmodified PCBs from an actual PC Engine and it’s controller. Both are open source #RetroGaming #Maker
Last night I became custodian of a #MakerBot 5th gen #replicator. I've never used a #3dPrinter before, and this one has a couple jammed print heads I'll need to fix to get it working.
Anybody got any tips for a #maker newb? Is there some cool #foss firmware I should install? Should I invest in a heated bed add-on?
I used a toothpick to fill in every edge and corner with resin first this time, as I've had gaps and thinner areas previously. I was going to do green resin but I found some nice pearly blues that together were pretty close to Vault-Tec blue so went with that

I finally tried out making a planter from scrap cloth. This tiny jade plant isn't yet at the point where it really needs water, but I'm hoping that the cotton will prevent overwatering without losing water so quickly that the soil stays dry.
The walls of the pot are made from 4 layers of cotton bedsheet material and I got to use the decorative stitches on my new machine to add a bit of stiffness. All biodegradable.
Off to Williamson Art Gallery today for #WirralMakefest. Should be a fun day of showing off all sort of making, tech and crafts.

The heater knob in my 1997 Ford Taurus broke off. It literally snapped in half. There was no saving it.
I had a pair of pliers in the car to turn the nub. Mrs. Muffler had a cow when she saw this. 😂
So I went out to the car, took some measurements, and 3D printed myself a new knob!

I built these Adirondack chairs from plans in Norm Abram’s Classics from The New Yankee Workshop book about 25 years ago. They’ve been out in the #pittsburgh weather all those years and needed a tuneup. A little sanding and screw tightening and they’re good as new plus a little patina. The redwood from Brookside lumber has held up pretty well all these years.

Today was one of those days in the workshop where everything seems to go wrong and you feel like a rookie all over again. I guess those days never go away, just hopefully get less frequent over time.
The one thing that did work was this yellow stain on a prototype I'm building. Hoping it'll look a nice when finished as it did when applied.
Came out pretty good, I think - just two layers, no sanding in between...

I've read some legitimate criticism about how some makers (myself included) often rely on single board computers for their projects instead of repurposed laptops. I personally use SBC for their GPIOs: they allow me to connect other random devices pretty easily.
However I found out that there are some USB to GPIO interface that could allow me to do the same with an old laptop: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2264

#Maker Mastodon, I need to secure this potentiometer to the inside of the 1/8 inch thick wooden build. I’ve hobby-knifed a divit so the nub that extends from the pot has something to grab into. Should I wood glue or hot glue the area where the wires are, so that I can keep the pot mounted close? Other ideas? Also it looks like I can add a knob in the slot on the outside. Is there a standard for knobs I should look for to find something to use here? Thx for ideas and “don’t dos”
I picked up this super high quality box for free at a hamfest years ago and keep waiting for a good cheap enough screen to put inside to turn it into something weird and fun. Maker-types, what software do you use for modeling 3D printed components? And do you have any good tutorials? I'm thinking about getting into 3D printing.
Bonus points if the software also includes features for integrating laser-cut components into multi-part designs. (I have done quite a bit of laser cutting.)

some friends wanted to see pictures of things i’ve been up to, so i made photos.
1) little zipper pouches. i wanted to have a couple of those to keep otherwise loose items in my backpack organised. silly me thought thin ripstop nylon would be easy to sew, but it is a very slippery mess. i managed to sew the zipper on the wrong way on the first one. for the second one, i made a few changes to the pattern and am a little happier. i’m by no means good at sewing, but it’s functional so i’m not gonna complain. :)
2) a woodcarving of the knight from hollow knight. i messed up the proportions a bit (horns too short, so they were unnecessarily cramped to get into the tight corners), but otherwise i am fairly happy with this first foray into carving something more complex than spoons.

#GIT ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE YOUR OWN COPY. The downloads and tarballs are not the same thing. They are partial copies at best. Even "forking" (on the same site) can be deleted at the original author's whim.
To actually have your own copy, it needs to be somewhere else. On a new site (if the original is on #github you can put your copy on #gitlab) or even your laptop. And when you can, use your copy instead.👿
