I have only been taking insect photos for two years and I know very little about photography. But what I have learned is how to find them...

A tiny (3 cm) female European Dwarf Mantis (Ameles Spallanziana) hunting ants on a vine in the garden. She soon got used to me bringing my smartphone close and devoured a dozen ants while I took pictures of her. The females of this species do not devour the male as the praying mantis does.

Look at this adorable baby praying #mantis, out hunting for its first little murders!

iNaturalist thinks it's a Carolina mantis, which would be native to the region, unlike the invasive Chinese mantis. But the Chinese mantis has history in our neighborhood too, as Wikipedia says "In 1896, this species was accidentally introduced by a nursery tender at Mt. Airy near Philadelphia, United States."

I think this looks more like a Carolina mantis, it has a curvy butt, but cute either way!

This is the mantis that taught me what happens to their eyes at night. He sat on the same strawberry bush all day, I took pics of him for a drawing during the day, and went back at night to get some different angles, he was still in the same spot.

This praying mantis embedded in a clear piece of amber is just over one inch tall. The amber, known as Dominican resin, is noted for its clarity and high number of inclusions. The mantis itself is clearly recognizable from the mantises we see today.

Heritage Auctions dates the piece from between 23 to 33.9 million years old. Even older mantis fossils, dating back 135 million years, come from Siberia.
