This past weekend, STLtoday continued looking deeper into plans to reshape the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
In print, I mapped where parishes were being subsumed and merged in #StLouis city and county — and where they weren't.
And online we charted the networks of parishes that will be sharing pastors.

And then it all changed back again. Those changes cost the life of 66 million people. But it didn't cost me a penny — because I kept my old atlas!

"Build it and they will come". It's a vast map for the Dakota Territory in 1879, and focused on the important communication infrastructure of the Postal Routes. But when you look at those huge counties, you notice many have no towns, or placenames. Perhaps for new homesteaders just a county name & boundary hinted at enough organization & potential that they could get in on something new. But for many rough years lay ahead.

3a. For the first visualization:
- Apply a graduated symbology or "data-defined" symbology using the pop_sum field.
3b. For the second visualization:
- Use geometry generators and the "scale" expression with pop_sum and max(pop_sum) to create the bar/column graph.

1. Used QGIS' "Create grid" algorithm to generate a grid of 30 second (or longitudes) covering the extent of the Philippines.
2. Used the "Zonal Statistics" algorithm to compute for the sum of population (pop_sum) for each latitude (or longitude) using the WorldPop population data.

The data used are a population raster (30 second/1km grid) from WorldPop and Philippine admin boundary map from GADM.
The first map visualizes the population per 30 second of latitude (or longitude) using color while the second visualizes the population as a bar/column chart.
The process was once again fairly straightforward.

Does anyone know any good ways in :qgis: of getting rid of those annoying triangular artifacts in Lidar-derived rasters? Or what causes them?
I've found one technique: create a scratch polygon layer, draw polygons around the areas to patch, and use the whitebox tools 'Flatten Lakes' algorithm. It doesn't remove them completely, but they're much less noticable.

You can find their press release here, but there is not much actual content there. Summarized: it's cheaper, flexible, easier to edit and now they can actually _fix_ issues that google maps won't.

Made a little map today. Haven't done one for a while and it was a lot of fun. Made almost entirely in #Inkscape though I did take it into #Gimp at the end to add a texture layer.
There's no story behind the map, it was just for the fun of it. Drawing is not my forte, ahem, but I love making maps in Inkscape where I can tweak to my heart's content.
Just realised that I forgot to add a compass. And a scale. Oh well, bit late now. 🤷♀️

- Ran the process dividing the country in 2 to 8 groups.

- Made a population layer (based on 2020 Census) composed of provinces and NCR cities/municipality.
- Used QGIS' "Order by expression" algorithm to sort the layer features based on their centroid latitude (x(centroid($geometry)).
- Made a script that would divide the sorted features into groups whose population sum was approximately the same (or close to it).

Johnson’s The Ghost Map, 2006.
A terse and lively account of the cholera epidemic, London at the time, and John Snow’s work together with Henry Whitehead and others. The grander arc on city development is a bit more tenuous and feels like overplaying Snow’s legacy.
Apparently gets the historical details right (unlike e.g. Tufte). Good pointers to further reading. Minus for not including a good reproduction of the maps.

Yesterday, while feeling somewhat braindead, I started a public Zotero library of digitised historic map collections.
It's mostly Australian at the moment, and mostly the stuff I am always sending my family history students to, plus a few other places I use regularly for my own research, but I have grand intentions of adding to it over time – I keep a 'resources' folder in my own Zotero after all.

Right a little note on #maps
I read an article years ago on how the maps we use shape the way we see the world, the choices we make and our relationship with our environment. I believe this is entirely true.
When I'm out #walking I like to use a mix of Google satellite view and a good old OS and this because as great as OS is, it doesn't paint the entire picture. Likewise Google is flawed. But together I get a good overview.
I wish there was a way to tell the map apps to never present routing options through certain roads under any circumstances unless explicitly authorized.
When you're driving you don't have much of an opportunity to evaluate your routing options beyond what's offered by the map. When you're in no position to pull over, this becomes a nightmare.
If I can tell my Ecovacs/Roomba to not enter the bathroom or go over a specific spot in the house, I should be able to tell Maps to never enter or offer routing through certain roads or even road types.
Also, these companies map cities using LIDAR, the tech should be able to tell the width of roads they go through. That info should be fed into the system so we can tell the apps the width of our vehicle and to avoid roads of certain widths or tell us if a road has varying widths.
