We don't know why narwhals have tusks.
It was thought they were for mating or sword-fighting for mates, but this was disproven. It was then assumed they "spear" fish on them, but observations debunked this too. We do know they're loaded with nerves and probably serve as a special sensory organ, so it was thought they help in hunting. But even this doesn't make sense because the females don't have tusks, and can hunt just fine without them.

TLDR: there's reason to be optimistic! The future is of course uncertain, but coralline algae *might* fair better than other habitat-forming organisms like corals 👍 BUT, our evidence base is way smaller than other systems... We must level-up our efforts!
