Is the fact that integration is hard but differentiation is easy (every closed-form function has a closed-form derivative, but not necessarily a closed-form integral) related to the fact that differentiation is hard but integration is easy (the class of integrable functions is much broader than the class of differentiable functions)?

Happy birthday to one of greatest #mathematicians of all time Emmy Noether (1882-1935), here with her eponymous theorem, the backbone of modern physics. #linocut #printmaking #sciart #mathart #physics #mathematics #histstm #WomenInSTEM #Noethember #womensHistoryMonth

Linocut portrait of Emmy Noether in front of a blackboard with diagrams and equations. Noether is printed in blue. She has her hair up and wears a pin-striped buttoned shirt with puffy sleeves, bow tie, tweed skirt with belt and is shown from waist up, turned slightly away from the viewer. The blackboard is green and shows a simple form of Noether’s equations at the top. On the left are three diagrams to represent translational symmetry (a frame of reference or 3 orthogonal axes and a straight diagonal arrow to a second frame of reference); rotational symmetry (a frame of reference and curved arrow to a second rotated frame of reference); and time symmetry (two simple clocks with an arrow between them and their hands at different places). On the right are the three associated conserved quantities: momentum (a p with arrow above it); angular momentum (an L with arrow above it); and energy (E).

So, there is this. #Dyscalculia. Are fellow #autistics / #ActuallyAutistics. I think this also falls under #Neurodivergent?

(Long)

I don't think I fall under this entirely, at least based on how it was described in this Wikipedia article.

However, I do have the following issues:
1. I'm very poor with mental computations, ever since.

2. It takes time for me to memorise a sequence of numbers, like a 6-digit phone number (I will more likely mix it up, or forget after a few hours or a few weeks).

Pi? I can only tell you, 3.1416, and when I checked online (just now), 3.1416 is rounded. LOL

3. I'm bad with measurements, distance, volumes. Ask me how long a meter, an inch, and so on, I have no idea. I can't visualise it unless I use a reference that I already measured before. Volume? Same thing. I need a reference, and of course, it only works if the container shape are similar.

For example, I know how far 5 km is if I use a reference that I know is 5 km apart. And that also depends on if it's in a direct line, or road-based measurement.

4. When I see a die, what I see is the shape of the dots, then I know which number landed. So, say, if most people can quickly identify 9 birds sitting on pole lines, I have to literally count it.

This is why I amaze, sometimes in doubt, whenever people give estimates on crowd attendance just by looking. It doesn't make any sense to me how they did it. And whenever I check the real count, their estimates are very close!

5. And because I'm bad with mental calculations and I mix numbers, I have to repeatedly do calculations to check if I got it right (and sometimes still get it wrong).

YET, I was good at mathematics during my school years.

* Grade 6. I was a sub-teacher for our class whenever our mathematics teacher is called for other school duties (since she had multiple roles other than a math teacher).

I actually talked to our teacher privately and declined, because I already know my limitations. But, our teacher saw something in me and knew I can do it. So, I did. AND, I learned to love math.

* 4th year High School. I enjoyed a friendly competition with my classmate in speed computations.

YET, I have low major exam scores. LOL. What's even funnier, our mathematics teacher told me to teach another classmate. Guess what? He scored higher than me in that same exam. (He took it late.)

My math teacher can't help but laugh. Haha. And me, dumbfounded. She also saw something in me, and knew I can teach math. Of course, I also learned why I'm always getting low scores in major math exams, but not in daily tests. It was the whole point, she asked me to teach math to my classmate for that same major exam.

* College course: B.S. Mathematics

Going back to the article, I'm good at:

a. Logic
b. Spatial reasoning
c. Time

This is interesting. LOL. I have no idea about Dyscalculia until today.

I get that context makes it clear most of the time - except for those of us doing math on paper. I’m needing to decide so my Z’s and 2’s don’t look the same. Just curious about the typography as I consider this.

In some fields of research it’s not too unusual for amateurs to make discoveries. Science is now complex, involving groups of highly trained people & special equipment but the universe is large & they can’t be searching everywhere. Amateur astronomers still sometimes find comets, or even supernovae before any professionals. Amateurs can still happen to find exciting fossils for instance. But it’s less expected in #mathematics, especially for problems like ‘how can we tile the Euclidean plane?’

My first, favorite and most important sequence, the weights of prime numbers
⬇️
http://oeis.org/A117078

We see prime numbers classified by level and by weight on the graph.

This sequence has led to the decomposition into weight × level + jump ➡️ https://oeis.org/wiki/Decomposition_into_weight_*_level_%2B_jump

Screen shot of A117078 on the OEIS: a(n) is the smallest k such that prime(n+1) = prime(n) + (prime(n) mod k), or 0 if no such k exists.

Light pollution has cut humanity’s ancient connection with the #stars.

Dedrinental to amateur and professional astronomers as well as wildlife, light pollution is also wiping out our cultural heritage that taught us about life, universe and everything.

We learned #mathematics and #physics through the 5000 stars visible for the unaided eye. We must not lose our connection to stars in a dark sky.

Since I had to move, a new #introduction is in order. I like #science #physics #philosophy #nature #art #information #biology #evolution #mathematics #evolution #animals #pets #activism #history #writing #programming #gaming #books #logic #atheism #fiction #nonfiction it's all good. I tend to boost/fav informational posts or nature photos/art, and my dash is currently set up to show the science and nature hashtags in their own columns. I have a tendency to not sign in for days or months and then burst re-boost when I do come on, but I lurk on a lot of instances since I find the trending feeds can be a little bit different.

The less grounded in reality/pragmatism a given philosophy is, the less I like it. A definition of 'truth' that doesn't connect to reality or changes for everyone? Ehh. In general relativity, it is actually the invariants (light speed is constant for all observers) that are most important.

it turns out regular #mathematics isn't enough

we know for absolute certain that we will never know if the #continuum #hypothesis is #true or #false

which means the regular fundamental #axioms of mathematics, it turns out, are completely #insufficient to prove the continuum hypothesis either way.

which i think says a lot, doesn't it

Check this out!

'What is the difference between the words "nice" and "good?" '

https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-the-words-nice-and-good/answer/Deborah-Elizabeth-Finn?ch=15&oid=22216675&share=b19ca985&srid=l6B&target_type=answer

My best guess is that "nice" in the realm of #mathematics is somewhat similar to "elegant." I.e., the proof has maximum brevity AND maximum explanatory power. It is well-judged, precise, and without unnecessary adornment.
