Drug-resistant infection - The agricultural sector has escaped scrutiny
"The issue of untreatable infections is no longer an abstract notion; it is now a reality."
"The Joint Expert Advisory Committee on Antibiotic Resistance (JETACAR) said "the transfer of antibiotic-resistant bacteria along the meat chain is believed to be one of the most significant sources of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from animals", and the scientific consensus since then has only hardened."
"For decades, the meat industry used the drugs with relative abandon. The majority of this use had been not to treat sick animals, but as a key ingredient in animal feed to promote rapid growth and act as a prophylactic."
"JETACAR revealed two-thirds of Australia's antibiotics were being used in animals, and most of that for "subtherapeutic doses" to increase growth, prevent disease and "reduce feed requirements"."
"It was only a few weeks ago, three years into the new strategy, that the Department of Health finally awarded a $438,000 contract to big-four consultancy KPMG for the design of the surveillance system."

If you order a beef burger with bacon, cheese & mayo, this requires someone to kill:
1. The cow for the beef
2. The pig for the bacon
3. The baby cow and the mother cow (eventually) for the cheese
4. The mother hen (eventually) for the egg mayo
5. Potentially several baby male chicks which are a byproduct of the egg industry
Or if you choose a veggie burger with vegan cheese & vegan mayo, you choose not to kill anything.

With 8 billion people to feed every day, demand for protein — especially meat, which takes by far the biggest toll on the environment — soars as the population grows.

No one inquired what I was making the other day with #Pepperoncini! So here was the next step prior to an hour and a half in my biggest Dutch oven to make about 10 pounds of Mississippi Chicken. I followed this recipe exactly. Astonishing that 4 ingredients made such perfection. 6 frozen 2-3 cup portions ready for any recipe needing cooked chicken. I had saved frozen 2 giant packages of skinless boneless chicken breasts I got on sale in August for $10 total! #Meat #Chicken
Does Humanity Have to Eat Meat?
Meat eating may not have made us human after all, say paleoanthropologists
“Farmers' groups have lobbied hard for the law against cultivated meat to go through.
Italian MPs have voted to back a law banning the production, sale or import of cultivated meat or animal feed, in what the right-wing government calls a defence of #Italian tradition.”
Eating less #meat is not only good for the planet, it makes YOU healthier.
Especially stay away from processed meats.
"They found marked reductions in cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes and a lower risk of dying from any cause during the periods covered by the studies, especially when red and processed meats were replaced with plant-based foods."

I’m not going to make a big pie this week, but I have a bunch of left over steak from a dinner out so I might make a hand pie with the leftovers. Last weekend I feel like I overdid it with the cooking so this week I’m taking it easy. I still have many jars of soup and a slice of that pie.
And by taking it easy I mean I put 3.4 lbs of pork shoulder in the slow cooker for pulled pork. It’s slow but the active effort is low.
"A $70 trillion-backed investor group has called for an "urgent" policy focus on accelerating #climate action across the global food and agriculture sector at the upcoming #COP28 Climate Summit, after fresh data underscored how greenhouse gas #emissions from the world's largest #meat and #dairy producers are still on the rise."
“The subjects of the #study were 1001 adults who regularly ate #meat, split into four groups. They were each shown pictures of cooked meat, fish, #vegetarian and #vegan meals in canteen-style, for example burgers and quiche. Each picture contained either a #climate warning label, a #health warning label, a #pandemic label, or no label at all.”
Australian climate denial and inaction
"This site will highlight moments from the failed efforts to do anything serious about climate change, over the last 65 or so years...We’ve been studiously not doing anything about climate change for a very long time (that’s not strictly true – we’ve been making it much worse)."

Yesterday's lunch: Roast pork in a bacon and sage coating with sweet potato mash, plum sauce and baby spinach.
I learned glazed onions and plum jam make a fine sauce for pork.
The sauce and the mashed potatoes (extra finely pureed) were perhaps a little too thin. But it was very tasty.
