Just did an in-pyjama run to our chemist to hire a nebuliser machine for my housemate.. she started getting sick in the US and is still sick now.
Multiple negative covid tests. She's got bronchitis, and they've sent a lab specimen to see what the big is.
Hopefully the nebulised saline will at least help ease the cough for a little while.

The first few paragraphs:
NOVEMBER 2023 -- Paradigm changing. Breakthrough. Revolutionary. These words are often associated with mRNA vaccine technology. And it’s for good reason—a lot of good reasons which could affect various medical specialities.
Development of the technology began over 40 years ago as an obscure concept in cell biology. The idea was to find a way to harness the ability of mRNA to help certain cells inside a patient produce proteins for therapeutic purpose—a sort of on-demand drug factory for individuals.
After numerous challenges, it evolved to a useable technology that led to the winning of a Nobel Prize by key pioneers in the field, Katalin Kariko, Ph.D. and Dr. Drew Weissman. Now, globally, researchers are advancing the technology to help treat everything from cancer, heart disease, HIV, rare diseases, chronic diseases and more.
Much of the initial work on mRNA technology was to create a therapeutic vaccine for cancer, according to Pamela Ohashi, Ph.D., a professor of immunology at the University of Toronto. But then the pandemic happened, and companies that were working on cancer pivoted to developing COVID vaccines. The switch wasn’t too difficult because vaccinating against a virus is more straightforward than the complexities of cancer, she told the Medical Post.
Now, while work continues in the realm of preventive vaccines against viruses, work in oncology has ramped up again. So, how can a vaccine that fights viruses fight #cancer cells?
How it works
Once injected, mRNA, packaged in lipid bubbles which protect the mRNA from premature degradation, is absorbed by dendritic cells in the body where it instructs them to produce specific proteins that serve as a GPS for responding T cells, according to Dr. Richard Edelson, a professor of medicine at Yale University. His lab is one of three in the U.S. sharing a $25-million award, part of President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot program “Curing the Uncurable via RNA Encoded Immunogene Tuning.”
With the COVID vaccine, the proteins that are produced are spike proteins, identical to the ones that sit on the surface of the virus. These unattached spike proteins teach the immune system to create antibodies that will disable anything with a spike protein, like the spike-adorned SARS-CoV-2 virus. At the same time, another part of the immune system, T cells, learn to recognize and destroy infected cells.
The vaccine doesn’t stop people from becoming infected by the virus, it just makes the body really good at fighting it when it shows up. More importantly, because the players are in place in vaccinated people, the immune system is quick to respond.
But with cancer, the idea is to teach the immune system to attack cancer cells, a more nuanced process. For one, “there is no way to create a vaccine that can prevent cancer, it has to be therapeutic,” said Dr. Edelson.
Plus, every person’s cancer is unique. Cancer cells undergo numerous mutations, and the cancer cell’s set of mutations is different for each person’s cancer. This makes it impossible to create a one-fits-all treatment like you can with an antivirus vaccine—so current immunotherapy cancer treatments are more of a wide-spectrum approach, said Dr. Ohashi.
Cancer cells can circumnavigate or suppress the immune system response. Immunotherapy uses various approaches to either give the immune system a boost to halt or slow cancer cell growth. But it’s not as specific as what mRNA promises, she said.
“The mRNA vaccines offer a different strategy because it’s not pushing the already ongoing immune response. It’s starting a new immune response. This is a very important strategy because it will be applicable to many other patients and really improve immunotherapy,” she said.
mRNA technology can be used to boost the immune system’s natural tendency to respond against cancer, specifically by boosting T cell activity, said Dr. Edelson. Thus far, #mRNA vaccines are better at initiating antibody responses than T cell one."...

Doctor appt today, and he happily wrote up all the pain relief I needed prescribed for my shoulder.
I thought it might be difficult to get him to prescribe endone, panadeine forte, mobic, panadol osteo, and palexia.. but we went over how I was taking them all and he agreed that I was fine with how I was approaching it - and that taking such a variety of things meant actually taking less opioid based meds because I was able to keep on top of the pain with things like panadol osteo.
We also did my mental health plan and I hit a 40 on the K10.. which is Very Fucking High. We talked about that, and about how therapy is helping and that a big part of the 40 score is probably actually pain related as well.
He agreed that I showed great insight into my illness and that I was comfortable with being vulnerable enough to ask for help, so I get to skip hospitalisation (fucking yay!) because I have a good support system and I know how to access acute assistance if needed.
But still, 40 was even higher than I was expecting tbh. I'm usually around a 25-27.

So, the guy who called me with the surprise job interview was also quite irritated about disability accommodation stuff.
He asked if there was anything stopping me from working certain days or times. I responded that there wasn't, aside from the fact that I'm only cleared to work 15 - 22 hours a week by Centerlink.
He asked if that was counted across a week, fortnight, or month.. so could I work 40 hours in a week and have 3 weeks rostered off. I said that I thought Centerlink would allow that, but it's not something I was physically able to do.. which is why I'm only cleared for that many hours.
He explained that shifts run from 7.30am through to 1pm, and then 1pm through to 6pm.. and asked if I'd be able to work a double shift if someone didn't turn up or if they needed the extra help. I explained that I wouldn't be able to do that as a regular thing, but possibly could very occasionally. It depended on the type of work that it involved.
He said that while it was a receptionist job, it was 'very physically demanding', and that it involved being on my feet most of the day. I asked what "on my feet" entailed in this context. I explained that I could walk around for hours but that standing still for extended periods (honestly, standing still for more than a couple of minutes is painful) causes my back to lock up because of injuries sustained when I was a nurse. I have bulging and herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and vertebral compression fractures.
I asked if sitting was an option, he said that there was a stool, but that using it meant that I wouldn't be able to pass clients the eftpos machine over the reception desk and wouldn't be able to get their details or greet them properly. He said that there was a fatigue mat to stand on.
I explained that I had a disability support officer at my employment service provider, and that I'd be happy to get her to call him. He said that he'd call her and never took her number.
The icing on the cake for me is that he's a chiropractor, and this was a job as a receptionist at a chiropractic clinic - so they're meant to know about disability and pain management, as well as know how damaging standing still for long periods can be.
This is the attitude when dealing with disability and disabled people.
He's legally obligated to provide "reasonable accommodations", but he'll just find another reason to not hire a disabled person.
*yes, I know that chiropracty is a dangerous sham. I need to apply for jobs because I'm poor, disabled, and on benefits that don't cover even a fraction of my living costs.

I'm used to be one who helps, and have never had ask for mutual aid but, the need is increasingly desperate. My SSDI (SS disability) was unjustly cut off and the fight to restore it could take months or years.
I don't even know how to go about mutual aid but, I've been laboring over a more detailed explanation of my situation to post at a later time. In short, I'm struggling to have enough to eat, facing eviction from an ablest/abusive environment and having what little I own being held hostage by a person who offered storage in the guise of "Christian" charity. When I did not respond to his recruitment and grooming, he became aggressive, abusive and locked my belongings away from me.
The belongings include sentimental items, all of my legal docs and IDs, medical devices, and a few furniture items, one of which is an expensive recliner to accommodate my physical disabilities. The individual is threatening to sell them, give them away or throw them out. without my legal documents, I cannot even apply for assistance or SSDI. There are many other challenges I'm facing and have set a goal on my ko-fi page that I hope will be enough.
There's not a lot of work for a person with one functioning hand and a myriad of other physical and invisible disabilities. My numerous attempts to find online work from home have been unsuccessful and soon, may not have a home to work from. As my health allows, I spend 24/7 writing and fighting for disability rights, posting regularly on Mastodon.
Any assistance in the form of mutual aid and online "work from home opportunities" would be greatly appreciated. Monthly donors of small amounts would be a tremendous help to help me to continue what I do. One-time donations of any amount would also be helpful to my survival. My phone has also recently been cut off. If I end up on the street without it or Internet access, it could spell the end of my writing and advocacy efforts. This is not considering what may happen to me in that situation. I would be internally thankful for any assistance that would help me to survive and continue my work.
Immediate needs: food, funds for housing, phone reactivation. I also apparently need to rent a truck and pay people to retrieve my belongings from this "director of international Christian missionary ministry" who has possession of everything I own.

Under their guidance, a woman whose fetus has a fatal anomaly would be told NOT that the condition is #terminal but that it’s “life limiting.” Similarly, if someone’s water breaks months before her due date, she would be informed NOT that the #pregnancy is #nonviable but that it’s “pre-viable.”
#Republicans hope that by changing the way #Americans talk about #abortion, it might help change the way they feel about abortion — which is, right now, very #ProChoice.
…But rather than change the #policies that are causing so much suffering, #conservatives seem to believe they can talk their way out of the problem not just w/ #political messaging but also by #manipulating #medical & #legal #language.
After 18 months, multiple doctor visits, two cortisone injections that didn't work, an xray, ultrasound, and MRI that showed multiple serious injuries, 12 weeks of physio with reports back to the doctor saying my progress was plateaued and not moving forward, I finally got a script written for some pain relief.
Although that pain relief is tapentadol SR, which is probably going to do next to nothing.
At least this is a step closer to getting something written up that might help when I call back in a week to let them know I'm still in pain.
