Day 29: #Barbie
Andy Warhol’s screen prints of Marylin Monroe are iconic to this day. I decided another classic icon – the 90’s #LittleMermaid Barbie of my childhood – deserved a similar treatment. I don’t have screen printing supplies, so I used #Krita instead. #DigitalArt for the win!

Say what you want about Disney turning every animated movie into live action, but you have to admit that whoever looked at Halle Bailey & said “she looks like a mermaid with human legs” was 100% correct. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find a mermaid-y picture to use as reference- turns out that in almost every single picture of her she is in a perfect mermaid pose!

Virgil Finlay cover painting for Fantastic Universe, July, 1957, which I guess is kinda-sorta illustrating August Derleth's Cthulhu Mythos story which was later changed to "The Seal of R'lyeh." I don't remember any mirror-obsessed mermaids from that but part of it does take place in the sea!

Recuperating from the rain with a fun watch: MerPeople on #Netflix. Weeki Wachee here in Florida has always fascinated me. Our family has vacationed on Crystal River which is gorgeous. Virgos always get a raw deal in these zodiac paintings. Aries get a ram, Leo gets a Lion, Virgo gets to sit quietly doing nothing while being described as “patient” & “loyal.” You know what patience & loyalty get you? A fantastic garden! Bonus: gardener mermaids can just float tail up- no kneeling on the ground! Lucky!

Just built a real-time diagram showing the various TCP states of our www.bbc.co.uk & www.bbc.com in-house traffic managers - in Grafana, using the Diagram plugin (Mermaid syntax).
Still needs some checks & polish but it's pretty cool to be able to see what state the connections to the fleet are in.
I'll add per-region & edge node breakdowns in time but this feels like a nice start. been meaning to do this for a while.

I live in the most isolated capital city in the world, #Perth , and therefore on Whadjuk #noongar boodja. I pay my respects to the traditional custodians of the land, and their Elders - past, present, and emerging.
I am male (he/him), and married to the amazing artist @leece .
I have been a #Linux #Sysadmin for most of my professional life, and use Linux or derivatives exclusively at home.
For fun, I play #rpg games, and #boardgame . I also swim as a #mermaid (well, mer-dude), and ride a three-wheeled human-powered vehicle called a Me-Mover. I have a Hobie Outback pedal-powered kayak, which takes me back to my past as a Sea Scout on the Swan. I enjoy playing with #lego, #cooking, #preserving, and many, many other things.
I am #teetotal (and have been all my life) but love making mixed drinks, and have an extensive #zeroproof bar.
I am an amateur #photographer without any particular speciality, but I do particularly like taking shots of #birds (especially #raptors ), and other mer-folk. I also enjoy shooting #pinhole B&W, and play with in-camera #cyanotype (about which I have written extensively on my blog) . To round things out, I take quite a few #solargraph images.

Phew, it was a lot of tinkering, but my #flowchart|s for my #thesis came out really nice. Made with the #rstats library #DiagrammeR and #graphviz and rendered with #knitr, #bookdown and #latex via #rstudio .
The #mermaid integration is just broken for latex-based pdfs, which is sad because mermaid is just really nice with its easy syntax. graphviz has at least more power and is embeddable as a vector pdf file.
One of the most popular genres of reading during the 18th-19th centuries in #Japan was the #kibyōshi - a type of silly, illustrated novel that anyone could afford.
#Yokai and #folklore were a popular subject, and one book even tells of the illegitimate child of Urashima Taro and a fish. So naturally, she was born a #mermaid and called Uondo.
Her story predates Anderson's Little Mermaid by almost half a century!
