"During the pre-dawn hours of May 7th, the Earth will pass through the Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower, when 40 meteors may be seen per hour, with those closest to the Equator seeing more than those closer to the poles.

The “radiant point,” that is, the place in the sky where the meteors seem to radiate from, will be the constellation Aquarius and will be hanging low in the southern sky (or northern sky if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere).

The morning of May 7th is predicted to be the peak, but the meteors can be seen several weeks either side of the peak.

The full moon of May will happen two nights before the meteor shower’s peak. On Cinco de Mayo, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia/Oceania, there will be a penumbral lunar eclipse. For those in the US, UK, many islands in the Pacific, and the Kamchatka Peninsula, it will be too bright and sunny to see."

The Full Flower #Moon will wash out many of the streaking dusty leftovers of #CometHalley as the #EtaAquariid #meteors have arrived. Up to 50 meteors in perfect conditions per hour could be visible, and it's best viewed when Aquarius is up after 2:40 am DST.

When the title of a paper - "Direct measurement of decimetre-sized rocky material in the Oort cloud" - is obviously too obvious ... and the journal that published it puts it on the cover and gets the astronomy dead wrong: https://twitter.com/meteordoc/status/1639297365474529281. Anyway, the paper as such is quite interesting and you can read it open access at https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.06812 #meteors #OortCloud #SolarSystem

Unfortunately, the Moon is approaching full, so the skies will be a bit bright. Try to get out late tonight or before dawn tomorrow, and look to the north-northeast.

The #Geminids peak tonight (Tuesday night). Brave the cold and see 30–40 #meteors an hour this evening.

Stack of detected #meteors looking South from Dunsink Observatory @diasdunsink on 12th December 2022. Dunsink Observatory @diasdunsink has a number of video cameras monitoring the night sky searching for meteors. This is from our #GlobalMeteorNetwork camera IE0001. Free resources for teaching:
* Planetary orbits and barycenters
* Proof that Earth revolves around the Sun (stellar aberration)
* Asteroid, comets, and meteors
* Meteor impacts
* Exoplanets

and for extra fun
* Why are some asteroids & moons spherical while others are shaped like potatoes?

December 10, 1968 — Thomas #Merton#monk, #poet, #priest, #activist — died in Thailand while attending a conference of #Christian and #Buddhist monks. Merton lived at The Abbey of Our Lady of #Gethsemani near Bardstown, #Kentucky.

Imagine cold winter nights out in that knobby landscape and the sight of the milky way poured across a cobalt sky.

Requiescat in pace.

#StarrySky #meteors #Bethlehem

Thomas Merton is dressed in a Cistercian habit over which he is wearing a well-worn denim jacket. He stands in front of the hermitage he lived in. Merton is wearing a black wool knit cap and his hands are stuffed in his pocket. There's a dusting of snow on the ground.

The text of a poem follows.

ADVENT by Thomas Merton

Charm with your stainlessness these winter nights,
Skies, and be perfect!
Fly, vivider in the fiery dark, you quiet meteors,
And disappear.
You moon, be slow to go down,
This is your full!

The four white roads make off in silence
Towards the four parts of the starry universe.
Time falls like manna at the corners of the wintry earth.
We have become more humble than the rocks,
More wakeful than the patient hills.

Charm with your stainlessness these nights in Advent,
holy spheres,
While minds, as meek as beasts,
Stay close at home in the sweet hay;
And intellects are quieter than the flocks that feed by starlight.

Oh pour your darkness and your brightness over all our
solemn valleys,
You skies: and travel like the gentle Virgin,
Toward the planets’ stately setting,

Oh white full moon as quiet as Bethlehem!

Comets Leave Dusty Trails That Surround the Solar System

Comets are messy things. They scatter bits of dust as they travel through the solar system. If Earth happens to encounter one of those cometary dust trails, we get to see a meteor shower.

How do you escape from a meteoroid swarm?
It's not a science-fiction issue. After a relatively large impact dinged the Webb telescope in May, engineers came up with a strategy to steer it away from the "micrometeoroid avoidance zone."
https://blogs.nasa.gov/webb/2022/11/15/nasa-webb-micrometeoroid-mitigation-update/ #meteors #webb

Images of the Webb telescopes mirrors show the effect of an meteoroid impact on one of its mirrors last May.

I saw this photo of a meteor streaking over a volcano elsewhere and went searching for the backstory, since I knew I'd seen it before. The volcanoes in the pic are in Kamchatka in the Russian far east, and the photo itself was a lucky catch by Dutch photographer Tomas van der Weijden in 2016.

Here's what he has to say:

🌠 Don't forget the Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids will peak on the night between August 12th and 13th. There will be up to 100 meteors per hour. I recommend writing down wishes in advance :D #perseids #shootingstar #meteors #astronomy

Libyan desert glass was probably due to a 100 Megaton air-burst from a meteor, after examination of the zircon grains.

Knowing my luck with weather & watching anything celestial, I'll miss the Triffids when they come, too.
