The other day the 12 year old was talking about books they are reading in class. The class chose not to read Front Desk by Kelly Yang and they were interested. So to the bookshelf I went to grab the book so they can read it. It is often banned and is a great middle grade read. So glad they are interested.

It's spring break, that time of year when you try unsuccessfully to get your #middleschool kids to do #math and #science at home.
instead, here's the results of my own #physics experiment today... dropping water into a weigh boat on a scale from plastic pipette with tip cut to different diameters. The curve I fit is essentially a + b * diameter^2 suggesting that the suspending force is a constant plus a term proportional to the cross sectional area of the opening.

Our school begins a 2-week break at 3:00 today, so I just left a video comment in Google Classroom for each student using #ScreenPal . It makes video comments in Classroom super-fast. My class periods are short, and this allows me to give customized feedback and do quick progress checks on projects. My 6th graders likely won't check in over break (nor would I want them to), so the comments will help them pick up where they left off without a lot of backtracking. #middleschool #edtech #edutooter

Right now our top 2 #MiddleSchool options for next year are one #school that's < 3mi away (driving or biking), but requires crossing an awful #highway interchange with unprotected bike lanes or non-existent #BikeLanes. We're also lucky (well, not lucky, since we specifically chose #NYC for #transit) that there's transit options, although all involve a slow #bus.
The other option is 6-8mi drive or #bike ride, but entirely on the #QueensBlvdPBL except the last block. 🤔
7th Graders are still fun. They are starting their Art-> AI project.
They brought in photos (most anyway) of their landscape. The Art teacher is working on foreground, midground, and background.
From the photo, they will create:
- A watercolor
- A description
- AI generated image
The kids have the choice of whether to do the drawing or description first.
I can't wait to see the final results.

I had not seen the clip before; as a parent who has had kids in middle school with teachers expressing all sorts of opinions (not this opinion!) I can understand it from not only the cultural / community view but also the middle school parent view.
I think teachers - middle school teachers especially - are in a position of influence and power, and that they are entrusted to guide our children at a pivotal point in their cultural and social development. A lot of responsibility comes with this. And, while we want to encourage broad thinking and the teachers should be free to pursue their best methods for this, those teachers are also on a “social stage” if you will, that comes with a microphone, a megaphone, an amplifier… and so what might be dismissed as “just one person’s opinion” is never that, when one is a teacher, and especially a middle school teacher… it is always with the microphone, the megaphone, the amplifier… and as such, the teacher —- by definition —- will need to put an “awareness filter” on their words so that they tread with the responsibility and care that we expect of them.
This is a long winded way of saying, no fucking way… nope, not in my school district, not in their school district, not in anybody’s school district… I’m just trying to find polite words to say it. Not that I need to be polite about this…
