"This book provides the first full history of phrenitis. In doing so, it surveys ancient ideas about the interactions between body and soul, both in health and in disease. It also addresses ancient ideas about bodily health, mental soundness and moral 'goodness', and their heritage in contemporary psychiatric ideas."

Dear Friends of slight pain,

Latest #podcast of using slight #discomfort to #focus the #mind back into #attentive #awareness

https://audio.com/lobster/audio/ascetic-attention

The speaker discusses #ascetic #practice, which involves deprivation or slight pain. They describe two methods: one involves sharpening fingernails and pressing them into the hand as a #reminder, and the other involves squeezing a #mala bead or coin to bring attention back to the present moment. These methods aim to bring #awareness and relaxation. The speaker also mentions using a #meditation #bell as a reminder. These practices are simple but #effective in #refocusing attention.

Is my mind entirely contained within my head? Or does it extend into the physical world, integrating tools, data, and relationships as part of my thought process?

I really enjoyed Andy Clark and David Chalmers's paper on this topic: https://consc.net/papers/extended.html

For them, the boundaries we draw are artificial. Cognition, belief, and identity are fluid things that can be spread across the many parts of a dynamical system. The brain learns and evolves to adapt to its environment, leveraging whatever cognitive aids are out there, and investing brain power only on the tasks that can't be solved reliably in some other way.

I think this very relevant to disability. I love the idea that physical aids and extensions can be thought of as part of the self. I like how it centers accomplishing some task, without concern for how it gets done. A person's biological constraints don't have to limit their thoughts, abilities, or personhood.

What can #psychedelics teach us about the #mind ?

Find out in UC Berkeley’s new online course.

https://psychedelics.berkeley.edu/online-education/

@ryanmr

I read that it was a grindfest-extraordaire tho.

(Whch #mind you is #standart for most TalesOf games. Cause the difficulty just jumps UP out of nowhere :head_against_pole: )

Even #TalesOfTempest had its fair share)

I wonder why I like this series.

Maybe because the characters are colorful ?

Encoded in the large, highly evolved sensory and motor portions of the human brain is a billion years of experience about the nature of the world and how to survive in it. The deliberate process we call reasoning is, I believe, the thinnest veneer of human thought, effective only because it is supported by this much older and much more powerful, though usually unconscious, sensorimotor knowledge. We are all prodigious olympians in perceptual and motor areas, so good that we make the difficult look easy. Abstract thought, though, is a new trick, perhaps less than 100 thousand years old. We have not yet mastered it. It is not all that intrinsically difficult; it just seems so when we do it
#mind

Minsky emphasized that the most difficult human skills to reverse engineer are those that are below the level of conscious awareness. "In general, we're least aware of what our minds do best", he wrote, and added "we're more aware of simple processes that don't work well than of complex ones that work flawlessly".

Your Autistic Life

I find that when I write fiction, I tend to go for the jugular.

"The knight killed the dragon and the peasants rejoiced. The End."

Okay, but what motivated the knight?

Why kill a dragon?

Did the dragon have a life? What kind of life?

How about the peasant? Did they want the knight to kill the dragon?

Etc...

All of these questions eventually do come, but, good grief, it is like pulling teeth right out of my mind.

(Try pulling teeth right out of your mind. It is harder than pulling teeth right out of your mouth.)

I don't know why it is this way. Is it my chemo brain??? I definitely did not *allow* myself to be this creative prior to my cancer. So... 🤷

Or it could be my #ActuallyAutistic mind finally unleashed. Still, it is my cancer that pushed me out of the autism closet, just as it did push me out of multiple other closets.

My cancer has been in remission for almost 3 years now, with no signs of coming back.

I'd never go to someone who has cancer and ask them to find the silver linings. I think finding the silver linings has to be done by the person who has the cancer, and not by others.

Let me point out here that sometimes, there are no silver linings. I've helped people who were in this situation. ☹️

In my case, my cancer almost killed me, but there's been a silver lining. In some very queer way (pun intended), my cancer has freed my mind.

Not that I recommend getting cancer to free your mind. :madjoy:

I’m reading more #feminist #philosophy of #mind. Today I read Playfulness, “World”-Traveling, and Loving Perception by María Lugones, which was awesome!

This essay explores how marginalized people often feel like they become someone else when moving between socially-constructed “worlds,” perhaps even someone they don’t like or recognize as their "true self.” Lugones links this to the arrogant and shallow way we’re taught to see other people, primarily as extensions of ourselves, which makes empathy and connection hard.

Lugones uses the complex relationship she has with her mother to explore this, and a way to overcame it by deconstructing assumptions and seeking common ground in a loving, “playful” way. This isn’t just helpful advice, she argues this is something fundamental to human identity, and that an attitude of “playfulness” is essential for seeing someone as they would see themselves.

Here’s a paid link, but if anyone can find a free-to-read source, please share!

This semester, I'm taking a class on the philosophy of mind, body, and intelligence. The professor kicked things off by lamenting that the reading list is by a bunch of white men. He's actively looking for source material from more diverse perspectives, especially women, people of color, and cultural traditions outside of "traditional Western thought."

I wonder, do any of y'all have recommendations? I'd love to check them out myself, and share them with the class.

#Reincarnation is the concept that the non-physical essence of a living being continues to exist after death and begins a new life in a different physical form. This “essence” could be the #mind, #soul, #consciousness, or #spirit.

#Religions and #spiritual movements differ on what exactly is carried on, and in what forms one can be #reborn as. For some, it’s a part of the eternal cycle of life. For others, it’s a cycle you try to break free from.

Do you believe in some form of reincarnation?

What is mind/brain reductionism, in practice?

In Kandel's 2005 book, he lays out 5 tenants to "outline an intellectual framework designed to align current psychiatric thinking and training of future practitioners with modern biology". I regard this as a good snapshot of the "reductionism" that many quibble with, as it is practiced by the neuroscientists who adopt it. Would anyone disagree (either that this is reductionism or that this is a good snapshot of it?). Here are the principles.

Principle 1. All mental processes derive from operations of the brain.

Principle 2. Genes and their proteins are important determinants of the pattern of interconnections between neurons and how neurons function.

Principle 3. Alerted genes do not, by themselves, explain all of the variance of a given major mental illness. Social or developmental factors also contribute very importantly. Just as combinations of genes contribute to behavior, including social behavior, so can behavior and social factors exert actions on the brain by feeding back upon it to modify the expression of genes and thus the function of nerve cells. Learning, including learning that results in dysfunctional behavior, produces alterations in gene expression. Thus all of "nurture" is ultimately expressed as "nature".

Principle 4. Alternations in gene expression induced by learning give rise to changes in patterns of neuronal connections. These changes ... are responsible for initiating and maintaining abnormalities of behavior that are induced by social contingencies.

Principle 5. Insofar as psychotherapy or counseling is effective and produces long-term changes in behavior, it presumably does so through learning, by producing changes in gene expression ...

It seems to be the case that I have aphantasia. I am unable to conjure an actual visual-ish mental image at will.

I can "see" what I'm thinking about, but it's in a different space -- it's not visual. Not easy to explain. My dreams are very vivid and movie-like. It seems to be an inability to conjure images at will.

I'm disappointed to learn that I lack this seemingly amazing ability that most people have.

But I do wonder, isnt this how we humans learn too? Or its me as a neurodivergent person who learns like this? My understandings come from recognizing patterns and matching previous knowledge with them.

.
I’m hearing #Jesus say something like this:
“Listen! Change your #mind & your #heart about the way you are headed… turn & face a new way! #God is here with you & loves you deeply… God’s Kingdom is near. The way you face friends… the way you are headed will lead to disaster.”

The Latin root of "decide" is decidere -- meaning to cut off. Deciding is a slicing away of alternative pathways; the snuffing out of alternate universes. Decision trees are maps of multiverses.

Deciding is so much power that we unconsciously often tend to avoid it. We want to leave our options open forever. We want to pretend there is forever -- that our lives are not finite; that we don't have to choose; that we can have it all. Decisions can trigger our denial of death.

Global and diverse Mastodon #Philosophy folk - If you were structuring a two year course for 16-18 year olds to introduce them to #epistemology, #ethics, #mind, and #god, who are the female philosophers and philosophers of colour you would want to see take centre stage to #diversify and #decolonise a stale, male, and incredibly pale, philosophy curriculum?

The UK’s only A-level syllabus for Philosophy (AQA #ALevelPhilosophy) currently has some glaring omissions in terms of both representation of women (barely any) and representation of ethnicity (every named philosopher on the spec is white) on its reading list, caused by its generally problematic structure of focusing on ‘canon’ thinkers in the four topics it covers and no longer including political philosophy on the course. It needs changing, or at least supplementing by teachers outside of the curriculum, to give students a better taste of what’s out there than this limited and exclusionary vision of philosophy.

So what should we include?

Here’s links to the current spec contents if you want to know how it is being taught right now:
