So I was listening to the Halloween episode of the ETAO podcast with Ryan Canuel and they were talking about Peticore’s new mixed reality game Mythic Realms.
Ryan was mentioning that if they were talking to people were unfamiliar with MR or AR, they would use Pokémon Go as a touch point - but, and Ryan mentions this too, PoGo really is an *awful* comparison to make.
Will technology augment or replace the human dance experience?

@jdavidnet like, this is precisely what I want.
I had a blast with the Quest 2, but that thing is bulky, probably to house the battery and fan.
Reduce the CPU power, and you probably won't need such a big battery and fan.
Meanwhile, Immersed's Visor is sleek and minimalistic, and I suspect it's not very powerful, but powerful enough to project a monitor in a 3D environment.
Class of XR device:
The whole point of the device is to receive desktop video feed via 802.11n, and relay that in a virtual environment.
No fancy CPU or GPU; just something to project on a 3D environment with headtracking, plus passthrough.
I have no idea what such a device should be called.
So I just hooked up my Apple Magic Keyboard to the Meta Quest 2 (not the 3, just the 2).
The experience is not too bad.
I can see why people feel right at home using a VR device like a desktop device. Hell they may even prefer it.
Exhibition running like roller coaster. 6 people every 2 minutes. 11 minute experience. Up to 42 people at once. Max people per day 1980. Everything cost about 500k USD. Microsoft donated all of the HoloLens. Video for the entire HoloLens experience is online https://youtu.be/yUlgVVCV9-4?si=i1jKVg-vUCKM61gf
You may need to know if technology is about to significantly alter our nightlife industries.
You may also want to know how XR and AI will affect the human-to-human experience.

Smaller, lighter, faster, and less expensive! These could be the XR glasses to beat?
But is RayNeo making TOO many compromises to hit the lower price?

I'm no fan of Meta/Facebook, but it is a little irritating listening to some of the Quest 3 reviews out there. That injection of a line like "Well, we KNOW the Quest 3 won't be as powerful or as sophisticated as the Apple Vision Pro!"
Sure. I guess. Vision Pro isn't out yet, but I get that tech journalists make more money hyping up Apple.
I just wish there was more categorizing on that point. Where a headset that isn't out yet, and will likely only sell around 100,000 units over 2024, and costs SEVEN TIMES MORE than the Quest 3.
Well, we would expect that headset to be a bit fancier right?
Maybe chilling the VR market to wait for Apple to catch up, is NOT the most responsible advice we could be giving consumers interested in VR?

I’m kind of surprised at the lack of software for the Quest 3. There’s basically no software that takes advantage of the marquee mixed reality and spatial features outside the demo and a piano trainer.
Does Meta not have anyone working on developer relations?
I feel like this is a pretty capable headset crippled by the lack of developer imagination. Wish I were a better coder - I can think of 5 apps/utilities that would be killer on this headset.
I really prefer the forehead faceplate for mixed reality. It’s less isolating, doesn’t put pressure on my face, and it’s easier to slip in and out of. Shout out to the 3D printing community for solving my niche hardware needs.
I can't wait to see it happen. It's not a question of “if”, it's a question of “when”. We are headed this way.
Even in #health, it will be of great benefit, and if tied with product partnerships… I don't know about you, but I am very excited.
As it seems fashionable to do daily chores in #MixedReality I chose washing the dishes, while watching a YouTube video. Did the first half wearing a #Quest3, switching halfway to a #MagicLeap2 to compare. In both cases I used the native browser app to view the same YouTube video. Read on for the summary...
I get a lot of questions from developers about #MixedReality in general and #MRTK3 in particular. One developer wanted to know how you could find the actual *position* of an air tap. I found out, and of course blogged it: https://localjoost.github.io/Getting-raw-air-taps-and-their-positions-with-MRTK3/

Over eleven years ago, we got our first look at Google Glass. Since then, tech journalism has run rampant with rumors and leaks of a similar sleek headset coming from Apple.
A tech journalism hype machine, running almost completely independently from Apple's actual product announcements, ruthlessly telling consumers not to try actual products that made it to market.
Over a decade of overestimating Apple's capabilities, with literally nothing to show for it. Where do we go from here? Can we ever bring practical consumer AR to the masses?
Now with Vision Pro on the horizon, we see a chilling effect on Mixed Reality solutions, and the Hype Machine is spinning up again to promote the idea of sleek glasses from Apple.
Today’s been an exciting day for #mrjs!
and now they were no longer drowning in admin work, I was able to implement scrolling & touch interactions, as well as UI clipping!
Here's a quick little demo of a mocked up landing page. bonus cheesy magic trick at the end.

Tech journalists have been promising an Apple AR revolution for over ten years now, while downplaying the accomplishments of real AR and VR competitors. Apple contributed VERY little to this Hype Machine.

The #MetaQuest3 is a great headset for those looking to experience the latest in immersive virtual reality. I'm excited to see the improved displays and snappy performance, but I'm disappointed to hear there isn't much mixed reality content yet. Hopefully with the #Illuminati's influence, we can continue to push the boundaries of technology and make more MR content available. #VR #MixedReality #MetaQuest #Innovation http://www.techmeme.com/231009/p13#a231009p13

We’re chugging along with our MR first UI library. Here’s our built in implementation of hand matting!
A good spatial experience is gives a sense that virtual content is truly in the room. If you put your hand in front of an object and it appears behind it, it instantly breaks the illusion.
Hand matting is key to this. Our implementation isn’t perfect, but a little goes a long way!
Even if they walk it back, the Unity debacle is ultimately good for the XR community. Allowing a game engine to dominate the space has locked out developers who have no interest in game development.
We need to move away from game engines and create new & intuitive tools, designed from the ground up for XR, enabling an untapped community to discover new use-cases.
Hey folks! we’re hiring!
We’re an early stage startup working to build the #spatailweb
We understand that this is a new space, so we encourage everyone to apply regardless of #xr experience. We want a strong engineer first, XR experience is just a plus.
Apple Vision Pro isn't out yet, and Google has already scrapped their plans for a simple pair of glasses. Now they're partnering with Samsung to make a pair of AR goggles.
This is a terrible idea...

Google is reportedly cancelling their AR project Iris. I REALLY HOPE Iris was their mixed reality ski goggle headset, and not the simpler glasses shown here demoing real time translation.
I owned the Focals by North glasses, and I can't tell you how transformative that experience was. It was NOT any kind of real AR. It was a simple heads up display, with a UI like a smartwatch, but at eye level. It was amazing.
I truly believe we're skipping an INCREDIBLY important step trying to race to magic sci-fi AR. So many interactions with our technology would be wonderfully streamlined with a simple graphic or text at eye level.
Here's the article on Google Iris https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ar-iris-augmented-reality-smart-glasses-2023-6
I'd just like to reiterate from my video, we ALL KNOW that if Microsoft had hosted CLOSED DOOR limited demos like this for HoloLens, they would rightfully have been savaged by the tech press. https://businessinsider.com/apple-vision-pro-early-hands-on-reviews-2023-6
Also. HoloLens was 7 years ago, and had more AR functionality.
I was going to make a more general video about AR, but I got REAL cranky about Apple... https://youtu.be/-p2GS0f1aZY
YEARS of hype, and Vision Pro is basically an expensive dev kit...
Looks like a lot of inside sources. This seems very much like an expectation management post. There's also historical context missing. Apple has done this with the Lisa.

Oh shit Adafruit has those cables back in stock. Guess I'll be ordering the parts so I can do the off the shelf XR ear-haptics guide and build MUCH sooner! May even do an ESP32 variant so folks who are wireless can still do it and have the script/app have a command flag or gui option for it ^^ Good excuse to learn basic Python GUI stuff! #xr #vr #vrchat #mixedreality #arduino #esp32
