Two days ago the daily writing prompt thing asked about our favorite subject in school. I wrote a little snippet about my favorite subject in Kindergarten being The Letter People. I couldn’t remember if The Letter People (anthropomorphized cartoon letters of the English alphabet) were cardboard cutouts or inflatables.
As I wrote about not being able to remember I thought to myself that I would ask my mother if she remembered. She did some volunteer work in my Kindergarten class.
Of course it took a few milliseconds for me to remember that my mother is no longer with us. She passed away about nine months ago. That was the first emotional kick to the groin. The second came another millisecond later when I thought that it had been years since my mother’s dementia would have allowed her to recall something insignificant like this from over 40 years ago.
I don’t know why I am posting this. I told Jen about it yesterday because it made me sad and I try to share my feelings with the woman I love. Now? I guess I just miss my mother.

My mom and I have always kind of struggled to connect. Sometimes we get there, but mostly, we just complain at each other and hope it gets through. One of the things we both deal with is body image. It's 2 months until her birthday, and I just got the most incredible idea to slowly start buying things to treat her to an At Home Spa Day, managed and provided by yours truly. She's been so stressed lately, and sometimes, I think I'm the only one who hears her. Maybe this will become our thing. Maybe it'll mean nothing. But I can try. I want to try. “Well, it’s good to be bored, actually!” is such a hard sell to kids. I say it anyway, but I can’t blame them for their extremely, extremely dubious reactions.
A Mother holds her child's hand for just a short time. But holds their hearts forever!

Ok, time to talk a bit about my #mom. I love my #mother, and we always had a very close relationship. But she always was a #bully in the ways she taught me how to be who she thought I should be « for my own good » - especially cleanliness, appearance, being neat, presenting. Our flat was always spotless. I developed #OCD as a result and I'm always ashamed of how I present myself to others.
Today I live in a bigg-ish house that I pretty much maintain by myself (not working at the moment my boyfriend working full time) and I thing I do a pretty good job. It's clean, smells good, it's nice to inhabit, even with the cat. Doing that with chronic illnesses.
I was doing a video chat with my mom this morning and she spotted some cat hair tumbleweeds in a corner. She had a scornful laugh that broke me and made a comment about it was « impossible! » I snapped and told her that it was not her place to comment on the state of my house. I'm 36, I'm partnered. I live 400 km away from her.

One challenge with #careGiving / being a #careGiver is keeping #appointments straight. Both for the caregivers, and the person being cared for. Especially when there is #memoryLoss at play.
Back in November I started a Status Board project with a #raspberryPi 2B. After several iterations and incorporating user feedback, #Grandma has enjoyed having up-to-date info. #Mom has liked the ease of #automation. And I get to #nerd out a bit.

By the time I got to high school my dad’s business was suffering. A new highway was built and caused flooding multiple times at his machine shop in Williamsburg, Ohio.
Eventually insurance would no longer cover the damage and things went downhill. He’d eventually cut his losses and move what remained of the shop to an old movie theater in New Richmond.
An era of austerity would begin for our family, but we never went without.
Mom was always resourceful and started making clothes (again) as I was starting college.
(She used to make matching holiday pajamas for us growing up… and period pieces for the Bicentennial in 1976… shirts for the boys, dresses for my sister…)
I started a plaid phase in the mid-90’s (thanks grunge) and Mom made the nicest button-downs, with contrasting fabric on the inside cuffs and below the collar. In addition to her ‘hand made’ tag she’d sew a ‘GLASS’ name on absolutely everything I owned — including plaid boxers she made.
I probably exasperated OH MOM! but wore everything with pride.
God I was lucky.
