On the plus side the ride is nice and quiet, the trains are wide and clean! Definitely less stress getting to town. But will have to see during rush hour when I leave the city. #Montreal #Publictransit #REM

First time on the REM, glaring issue is directional signage. It’s not obvious which quai to board, nor was there any signage at least to tell you which direction you’re going too even from the Terminus. There are plenty of plenty of people to help, but if you new we to hire people to direct you, then signage is a problem. #Montreal #publictransit

(eg. The tunnel between 680 Sherbrooke and 2075 Robert-Bourassa is shut, and the one between the latter and 2001 Robert-Bourassa is only open till 4pm-ish?)

@iuculano @stephanie Each year ~12,000 additional cars are registered and on the road in #Montreal. Just to maintain status-quo, 12,000 parking spaces would have to be created downtown every year. Would you remove buildings or roads to construct parking? This increase is not sustainable as it is. Converting a couple of hundred spots to be more permeable is a small fraction of this annual increase.

Mayor of #Montreal, #ValeriePlante, proposes developing “sponge streets” to adapt to #ClimateChange, which would involve making certain streets more permeable by removing asphalt, i.e. parking spaces.
I think Plante is pushing her pro-bike, anti-automobile agenda a tad too far. It's one thing to promote #bicycles and #bike paths, things I'm for, but to continuously antagonize drivers by constantly removing parking spaces is unacceptable.

I tend to think most “holidays” are weird old traditions that don’t make sense to keep around; vestigial relics of a dead era.

But today is September 16.

On this day in ‘87, politicians and rulers from 46 countries gathered in #Montreal to negotiate and sign a treaty called the Montreal Protocol. This agreement, if ratified, would establish an international ban on producing substances that damaged the #ozone layer.

It was ratified by 197 independent states – every UN member – ignoring the complaints of the #CFC industry.

CFCs were banned, and the ozone layer hole has been gradually healing every year. The Montreal Protocol has been called “perhaps the single most successful international agreement”.

For me, that’s worthy of celebration.

Happy #MontrealProtocol day.

I dug into some numbers for this segment, and the data on #Montreal's pedestrian streets is astounding. 5.3 million pedestrians in two months on Mont-Royal Ave - that's over 85,000 per day! For context, the King streetcar carries about 84,000 people per day and the Don Valley Parkway was originally built to carry 60,000 vehicles per day, though it averages more like 135,000 vehicles per day now. An ordinary city street with near-highway capacity for moving people.

In Europe, many cities are introducing "school streets," closed to cars.

We're trying to do the same at our kids' school in #Montreal (and meeting lots of resistance).

#Sodalite is one of over 400 mineral type found in a quarry at Mont Saint-Hilaire, east of #Montreal, where an alkali-rich mafic magma intruded carbonates.

The Mineralogical Association of Canada has published a beautiful book on this locality (2nd ed. out later this year):
