When I was younger, we had a common place where #artists, #artisans, #misfits, #musicians, and all sort of kindred spirits and like-minded people hung out. Nino, the host, is a carpenter by trade and a long time Milan #underground and #art circles veteran. N8 (the name of the lab), was his business: a carpentry for bespoke furnitures and all sort of wood-related toys, dolls, artistic projects, and so on. N8 was also our #lab. Our place. We ran cinema forums, concerts, hang out there, had parties, birthdays, farewell parties, and so on. Twice a year we ran a "creative market", during christmas/spring, where all sort of artisans brought their #creations, where we made art #exhibitions, #liveshows, and more #creative endavours. We even had the official oil, oranges, wine, and produce "pusher" who would travelled from Sicily all the way up to Milan, by van, to partake in the market, stay together, and sell his stuff. All of this is just a very brief picture and just part of what that place was for us, for Milan, for many. One day it was gone. Things have never been the same. Gentrification killed yet another creative paradise in Milan. One of too many. For the sake of housing markets and cultural dumbness conformity.

When preparing my next radio show, I often select new tracks by completely unknown artists which, I think, deserve more recognition because I believe they are able to touch your souls with their music, they are that good. There are hundreds every month and its hard to select the correct ones because there is no "right" decision here. In the end its my personal taste or what fits into my show concept the best. It's unfair anyway.
In order to push my agenda more, I always tell something about the background of those artists. That's hard as well, because they are unknown – so its not so easy to "just google them".
So I ask. I send a mail to the artist, usually though their Bandcamp contact link.
And now comes the puzzling part:
Female Artists ALWAYS answer.
Only a few male artists answer.
Labels usually DONT ANSWER!
This makes me sad: Why are you offering your music on #Bandcamp, #Soundcloud or similar, when you are NOT interested in getting your music known to a wider audience? What's the catch?!
What is wrong with you LABELS? Why are you that arrogant? This is a lose/lose situation you are creating here. You are supposed to actually SUPPORT your artists!!
What I want to say is. Choose your chances. My show is not huge, yes. But I suppose, this doesn't change with other radio shows. You deserve an audience. So make yourself just a bit interesting. Your music is great. You actually HELP people getting though their struggles in live. Believe in you!

In it he included this link to “An Open Letter to the Next Generation of Artists” that Shorter wrote with his fellow musician/artist Herbie Hancock back in 2016. It's well worth read, as what they wrote is so broadly appicable.
