@jaypeach53 I asked on the #musicproduction tag and folks gave me tips on DAWs like Ardour, Bitwig, and Reaper. I’m not changing anytime soon, but I am glad to hear about options. I was mostly looking for ones that don’t use a subscription for access.

I compared what I had yesterday to the final result of today’s session. I was amazed by how much my mix improved in about 1 hour of work.

And when I was coming back to making music again after being away from it for twelve years my first thought of what software I would use was Reason. I knew I could pick it up again quickly and it really is just that fun to use.
I went to school for audio engineering and my classrooms were real world, professional recording studios. So, having a software like Reason was awesome as I could use it as a study tool to go over how to patch devices and to work on gain staging and signal routing.
For all of my talk recently about leaving Reason for another DAW I do really love it and working in it. For me, it is the ability to flip the rack around and connect cables just like in real world devices. I’m sure there is a more effective UI for this kind of stuff, but as someone who has worked with the real gear in studios it works so nicely.

After I finish up my current musical project for my next release I think I am going to focus on making music directly on my SP404 mk2 for a bit and see how far I can take things with the device what I can do with it.
I find it a really fun device that inspires a lot of creativity for me. I also like the idea of creating experimental electronic music on something that most folks would consider is a device for hip-hop and its related genres.

Excuse me while I have a bit of a "OMG, I am so fucking stupid..." moment.
Musically speaking, my favorite noodle around and make melodies on my phone app has been the Korg Kaossilator app for Android. It's not the most full featured little thing, but it works well enough to just get me out of my head and just mess around without feeling like I have to "do it right".
I kinda use it like a little musical scratch pad and if I like something I'll export the wav files and put them in a DAW and then expand on them more properly.
I hadn't been doing much musically lately because I've been more in visual art mode, but I discovered that on the last update of the app.... it broke. Crash upon launch.
I had to reinstall it, and it completely wiped everything I hadn't backed up (at least I think... I can't seem to find any info on where the data I hadn't exported as wav files could have been stored).
So, I'm dumb for not backing shit up regularly and I'm now big sad because there were things I liked that are gone forever.
If you're using silly little phone apps, don't be like me and remember to backup your shit, kids.

Мною записан второй ремейк для моего проекта "Чудовища Рокерштейна". В этот раз он сделан на основе семпла барабанов и MIDI-партии баса из трека "BREAK ON THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE [E MINOR] [91]" от группы "THE DOORS".
Данный ремейк получился не очень жутким, скорее попсовым даже как-то. Любопытно, что искусственный интеллект сайта-утилиты VOCALREMOVER не смог распознать партию баса в этом треке вообще (ещё бы, хитрый дед Рэй Монзарэк её на электрооргане наиграл!). Вместо баса он выдал на его дорожке одну сплошную тишину. То ли дет хитрый, то ли нейронка на этом сайте глуповатая какая-то там...

My desire to make my music creation process more traditional will likely result in future works having a lot of layered piano and I’m okay with this.
Maybe I should just go to using my SP404 mk2 like a recording unit and play things into it that I then turn into a track? I do want to start experimenting with using it to do more of the production process and not just the performance aspects.
I’m doing all of this thinking on my current DAW and general music making workflow as I am looking to get back more to a more straightforward approach of playing everything. In recent years I have discovered processes to generate sounds and melodies through modulation. I’m wanting to get back to something more musical in some ways.
And to complicate things more, I remembered that I got a free copy of Logic Pro from being an employee in an Apple Retail store. I downloaded that and I’m gonna check it out to see if I like making music there. It’s hard to argue with free and easily installed to my computer.
Thanks to everyone who replied on my post about switching away from Reason with suggestions on other DAWs to check out. I’ve got some good comparisons to make now. Also, thanks to those that boosted and got that post seen by others. It helped for sure.
Got a working prototype of a sample player with ADSR for the GBA. It supports per-cent tuning, sample interpolation and different sample rate options depending on the available processing budget. Also added a simple IIR filter, but not using it here.
It has N voice polyphony but here is running in monophonic mode.
I'll polish this a bit and port it to the Playdate & SDL versions of #uxn for the new audio device implementation.

Drambo has quickly become my favorite way to relax on the couch and make music. It has a really nice implementation of the tracker/Elektron workflow; great built-in modular synthesis tools; AUv3 hosting; and MIDI for external gear.
I need someone to be real harsh now: Does the vocals work? I am not really a singer, and I usually burry my vocals in so much music and effects. Here they are sitting kinda.. naked.. and I feel exposed.
List of things in electronic music tracks that will instantly make me turn it off:
- Sirens/alarms/phone ringtones
- Random non musical whistling/buzzing noises
- Children
- Overlapping/repeating non lyrical voice samples
- Off key notes or sequences
All of these represent some very low quality production to me.

When you are good at other than keyboard instruments, does it bother you that you can't slightly bend each note to tune it on keyboards/synths? I mean, is the difference between Pythagorean tuning and equal temperament clear to your ear?
I've built an electronic monophonic instrument to my liking, to learn music as pretty much a beginner. Later, it's going to have coarse pitch bending (note transitions, playing between semitones), but I'm unsure if I should include a separate way to do it very accurately, too.
