Lindera Angustofolia or oriental spice bush

Lindera Benzoin is our native spicebush. This lindera retains it's leaves until after the insignificant flowers appear in the spring. In autumn, the leaves go from green to multicolored, ending up a medium beige color throughout the winter.

This small tree is great for privacy.

🔥 #Feuerwanzen sind bei uns zu jeder Jahreszeit im #Garten anzutreffen. Ein kurzer Sonnenschein wie heute genügt, um sie aus ihrem Versteck für ein Sonnenbad zu locken. An Feuerwanzen wurde gezeigt, dass auch #Insekten Persönlichkeiten haben: Es gibt mutige und zurückhaltende, wie Forscher herausfanden (E.Gyuris, "Individual behaviour in firebugs"). 🌹 Viele #Rosen sind noch in der zweiten Herbstblüte, auch bei uns im #Garten. Rosen mit ungefüllten oder halbgefüllten Blüten werden gerne von Insekten besucht. Bei gefüllten Rosen wurden die Staubgefäße weg gezüchtet und sie bieten Insekten keine Nahrung 😢 #Naturgarten #mygarden

Reblooming iris sets off this white metal birdfeeder.

Vor drei Jahren haben wir das #Hochbeet für und mit den Kindern aus alten Paletten 🛠️ gebaut. Wie man sieht, mussten wir ein Brett vorne ersetzen. Die Kinder hatten das Hochbeet im Frühjahr als Karaoke-Bühne genutzt, als nichts angebaut war. Insgesamt hält es sich aber ganz gut, wenn man bedenkt, dass es keine Innenfolie oder Schutzlackierung hat.

Heute konnten wir sogar noch eine 🥕 Karotte geerntet, die wir vorher übersehen hatten.

Alle dauerhaft landlebenden #Schnecken 🐌 sind Zwitter. Ihre Zwitterdrüse (Ovotestis) vereint die Funktionen von Eierstock und Hoden und kann Spermien und Eizellen produzieren. Passend dazu gibt es auch eine männliche & eine weibliche Geschlechtsöffnung, also Penis und Vagina.

Bald werden sich die Schnecken ein geschütztes Plätzchen suchen und in die Winterruhe fallen.

I bought this potted mum from a grocery stand over a decade ago. It said pelee type; a term of which I was unfamiliar.

I still know little more about it now as I did then which is that they are semi hardy. I planted it in a semi zone 8 microclimate in my yard (I'm zone 7) along the down side of my driveway. The insures adequate moisture which is also well drained.

Anybody know more about the pelee mum?

White osteospermum blooming next to red snapdragons now. Both return here and make for a colorful fall sloping garden that lines my driveway.

Other plants include juniper, spirea and blueberry. I plan on adding some itea here.

Gestern haben wir die #Nistkästen gereinigt, September/Oktober ist eine gute Zeit dafür. Man muss sie nicht jedes Jahr reinigen, aber wir sind immer neugierig, ob sie belegt waren. Ausfegen reicht in der Regel aus, wenn nötig heißes Wasser (ohne Zusatz) zur Hilfe nehmen. Erfreulicherweise war in den Nestern dieses Jahr nicht so viel Müll mit verbaut, wie in den Jahren zuvor.

Ein #Buntspecht 🌈🐦 wurde von der Fotofalle an der Vogel- & Eichhörnchen-Futterstation erwischt. Buntspechte sind anpassungsfähig und daher auch in Städten häufiger anzutreffen. Wenn es keine Insekten mehr als Nahrung gibt, fressen sie Nüsse, Samen oder Beeren. Sie sind Höhlenbrüter, die alte morsche Bäume benötigen, um darin ihre Bruthöhlen zu zimmern.

Today was a nice day. For the first time this summer I enjoyed the terrace because it was mosquito-free (but only until 5 pm).

Hanging out with Gizmo, sipping coffee, after gardening. I spotted two flowers. The last bud of the magnolia stellata is blooming. And a rose bush has one tiny bud.

Lily Empress is not at all shy: look at those layers of petals. The perfume is a garden-filling knockout of a fragrance. Like Anouska that I showed you the other day, this is a roselily, and it's my first year growing them. Here with the Barbie pink phlox and magenta lychis coronaria.

This is a nest in a deodar cedar in my yard. If you zoom in, it looks like you can just make out a beak and an eye of a bird. Does anyone know what kind bird builds a nest like this that hangs from the branch?

@Krisss @nypa, I spent 12 hours yesterday in my new 1000 square meter garden cutting off the field thistle flowers (Canada thistle), breaking up and crushing the hard earth, removing the weeds (mainly field bindweed and chamomile), and planting potatoes. I need about 90 minutes to plant 1 potato tuber. Can I be ok?

Do I have to use herbicides because of all the weeds?

The pond corner. The barrel will hold #peas later, but now it's #tulips (starring the double orange Orca), plus purple honesty that I dug up from where it had self-seeded. Behind it, #hellebores obscure the tiny pond, which is tucked into the corner and supports a few #frogs and #newts. A neighbor offered me her Victorian fireplace surround so I put it here with a mirror tucked behind, a trick from garden designer Mirabel Osler.
