Herrliches Wetter 🌤️ an diesem Wochenende. Viele #Insekten waren unterwegs, besonders auffällig waren die zahlreichen #Kohlweißlinge 🦋.
Unter der kleinen #Eiche im Garten liegen viele Eicheln mit Wucherungen. Es sind die Gallen der #Knopperngallwespe, deren Larven sich darin entwickelt haben. Die Formen sind sehr vielfältig und interessant anzuschauen 🔎 #SchauGenauHin #Naturgarten #mygarden

I got this semi hardy (zone 7) woody perennial from the annual plant sale at the #USArboreum a year ago this past April. It returned just fine.
This plant has many herbal uses, blooms now, and is gorgeous. Not a native but also is not considered invasive.

Insekten durchlaufen in ihrer Entwicklung entweder eine vollständige (Ei, Raupe, Puppe, Imago) oder allmähliche (Ei, Nymphe, Imago) #Metamorphose. Die #Nymphe durchläuft ihrerseits durch Häutung verschiedene Stadien, bis sie ausgewachsen ist. Das Bild zeigt das erste Nymphenstadium nach dem Schlüpfen. Ich denke es sind Marmorierte #Baumwanzen, die sich auf der Blattunterseite vom Sauerampfer befinden.

🎃 Die Kürbisse der Kinder im Hochbeet blühen noch und der erste #Kürbis sieht schon reif aus. Die langen Ausläufer der vier Pflanzen haben das Hochbeet längst verlassen und sind auf Erkundungstour in den Nachbarbeeten. #Naturgarten #mygarden
Der #Rosmarinkäfer 🪲 ist bei uns im #Garten oft am Lavendel zu finden. Aber der Käfer von heute war auf einer unserer kleinen Weiden am Teich. Das ist erstaunlich, denn sie können kaum fliegen und gehen lieber zu Fuß. Der Rosmarinkäfer stammt ursprünglich aus Südeuropa.

Der Herbst steht vor der Tür und die Rosen zeigen ihre prächtigen #Hagebutten. Sie sind eine vitaminreiche Nahrung für viele Vögel & Kleinsäuger. Auch die verdorrten Wegwarten, Disteln, Nachtkerzen, Sonnenblumen, Karden, Buchweizen,… bitte als Büfett für die Vögel 🐦🍴 stehen lassen.
Eine #Sumpfschwebfliege 💛🖤💛 ist auf den Wasserlinsen im #Teich gelandet. Die Weibchen kleben ihre Eier an Pflanzen an der Oberfläche eines stehenden Gewässers. Die Larven leben im Wasser und ernähren sich von verrottendem organischem Material.
Man muss schon genau hinsehen 👀, um die #Schnaken bei der Paarung auf der Wiese zu entdecken. Schnaken haben keinen Stachel und ihr Mund ist so weich, dass sie sich nur von herumfliegenden Pflanzensäften und Wasser ernähren. Sie können uns also weder stechen noch beißen ☮️🏳️.

Today was a nice day. For the first time this summer I enjoyed the terrace because it was mosquito-free (but only until 5 pm).
Hanging out with Gizmo, sipping coffee, after gardening. I spotted two flowers. The last bud of the magnolia stellata is blooming. And a rose bush has one tiny bud.

🦋 Das #Waldbrettspiel ist mit Abstand der häufigste #Schmetterling in unserem #Garten. Ich habe mich immer gewundert, warum das in unserer städtischen Umgebung so ist. Auf dem Nachbargrundstück stehen einige große Nadelbäume 🌲, und da die Raupen Gräser fressen 🐛🍽️🌾, kommt ihnen unser #DuSollstNichtDauerndMähen Ansatz entgegen. 🤔 Dennoch finde ich es erstaunlich.

#Totholz ist ein wichtiger Lebensraum 🔎🌍 für viele Käfer, Wildbienen, Solitärwespen, Milben, Würmer, Asseln, Moose, Pilze… Besonders die beiden letzteren machen es auch zu einem attraktiven Gartenelement 🦄. Das Bild zeigt ein morsches Holzstück an unserem Hochbeet, das dekorativ mit Pilzen & Moosen überwachsen ist.
Ein #SchwarzerNachtschatten hat sich am Teich angesiedelt. Verwirrend ist, dass es sich um eine #Giftpflanze ☠️ handelt, die in einigen Regionen der Welt als Nahrungsmittel verwendet wird. Die in allen Pflanzenteilen enthaltenen Giftstoffe schwanken je nach Boden- und Klimaverhältnissen, Reifegrad und Alter der Pflanze sehr stark. Sie kommt in ganz Europa und fast überall auf der Welt vor. Schwebfliegen und Bienen besuchen die Blüten.

Das ging schnell: Vor knapp einem Monat war die #WildeMöhre noch voller Streifewanzen-Babys 👶🍼. Jetzt scheinen sie schon ausgewachsen und haben ihre auffälligen roten Streifen ❤️🖤. Auf der Unterseite sind die #Wanzen übrigens gepunktet und nicht gestreift.
Lily Empress is not at all shy: look at those layers of petals. The perfume is a garden-filling knockout of a fragrance. Like Anouska that I showed you the other day, this is a roselily, and it's my first year growing them. Here with the Barbie pink phlox and magenta lychis coronaria.

Surprisingly, the magnolia stellata is blooming again! There are only three blossoms though and in only one of the two trees. The other tree is about to spurt its red seeds.

This is a nest in a deodar cedar in my yard. If you zoom in, it looks like you can just make out a beak and an eye of a bird. Does anyone know what kind bird builds a nest like this that hangs from the branch?

@Krisss @nypa, I spent 12 hours yesterday in my new 1000 square meter garden cutting off the field thistle flowers (Canada thistle), breaking up and crushing the hard earth, removing the weeds (mainly field bindweed and chamomile), and planting potatoes. I need about 90 minutes to plant 1 potato tuber. Can I be ok?
Do I have to use herbicides because of all the weeds?

The pond corner. The barrel will hold #peas later, but now it's #tulips (starring the double orange Orca), plus purple honesty that I dug up from where it had self-seeded. Behind it, #hellebores obscure the tiny pond, which is tucked into the corner and supports a few #frogs and #newts. A neighbor offered me her Victorian fireplace surround so I put it here with a mirror tucked behind, a trick from garden designer Mirabel Osler.
