Because we #dispossessed the #native #Americans from their #homelands exactly how the #Palestinians were dispossessed from their homelands.

When I was born, the Mvskoke Nation as a sovereign government was illegal. Native spirituality and cultural customs were illegal.

Custodial sovereignty wasn't "restored" until the 1970's and to this day full sovereignty and territorial integrity as they were promised in treaty obligations are still elusive.

It doesn't surprise me at all that colonizers object to the full sovereignty of Israel, Palestine or both.

When the modern states of Israel and Palestine were created and much was written about them, Indigenous nation rights were not mainstream thinking like they are today. If these Indigenous nations were created today, the story would likely be much different.

As Israel and Palestine were, North American Indigenous nations were also carved up by colonizers, is their sovereignty illegitimate or non-existent for this fact?

Personally, I see the rights of Israel and Palestine to exist as nations through an Indigenous lens.

If you deny the rights of one, the other or both to exist as Indigenous nations, you deny their Indigeneity.

Both Israel and Palestine have Indigenous rights to exist as nations.

You are either for Indigenous rights or against Indigenous rights.

White flowers in the #native #garden at Queens Park. 14 November. #Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand. Three #Hebes (#Veronicas) and a #Chionochloa.

#nzplants #BloomScrolling #NewZealand #spring #Hebe

Hebe ochracea 'James Stirling'. Whipcord hebe. Small white flowers unevenly scattered over golden brown foliage that has hints of olive colour as well. The flowers are like a dusting of snow on 'Old Gold' foliage. Attractive plant, unusual colouring.
Lush green whipcord hebe, a large plant, covering a fair bit of ground. Starry, random, scattering of small white flowers which are held right at the tips of their stems. A Linum monogynum interloper (NZ linen flax) also has a white flower - held aloft above the hebe.
Large clump of native grass. Appears to be Chionochloa flavicans with old creamy-white flower heads above, and greeny-white new flower heads lower down. These silky plumes droop gracefully from the ends of their stems.
Hebe 'Wiri Mist'. Fresh green foliage and small, pure white, soft, brushy flowers. Many flowers are yet to open. The buds are held in heads that are slender, long, and pointy, and arch gracefully outward over the foliage.

Indigenous self-identification is a scam.

"In TallBear’s view, part of the issue is the ambiguity of the label “Indigenous.” Indigeneity is often viewed in racial or ethnic terms, while Indigenous citizenship hinges on specific terms set by a tribal nation. She pointed to Sainte-Marie’s use of the phrase “Indigenous-American identity” in recent statements, saying it indicates how many people see being Indigenous as a matter of self-identification."

#Brachyglottis laxifolia I understand to be the preferred name for this plant (the old label had #Senecio laxifolius). Queens Park, #Invercargill Southland. New Zealand. 14 November. Naturally found in northern South Island.

#nzplants #NewZealand #BloomScrolling #daisy #yellow #spring #native

Very bright yellow daisy flowers, with yellow petals and yellow centres. There's still lots of tight round buds, which are silvery-white in colour. Some buds are opening and therefore have yellow petals emerging.
Similar to the first photo but with more foliage and buds showing. The leaves are matt green, quite long and not so wide, with a white mid-rib, white edge, and white on the back.
I stood on a rock to take this pic. A continuation of the same plants already shown but this time it's a whole stream of them occupying a lengthy space with other much larger plants behind. It's a sea of silvery-white flower buds set against the plants' green or white leaves - depending on whether you're seeing the top surface (green) or underside (white). None of the buds have yet opened to yellow.

DNA or family lore are not acceptable forms of proving Indigeneity. They may be the start of a journey to reconnect, but they do not prove Tribal Nation connection and no Nations accept it.

North American Indigenous people are some of, probably the most documented people in history. We're stamped and numbered.

There are exceptions but they are very very VERY rare, be suspicious of people claiming loopholes for their Indigeneity.

Lookout for terminology meant to skirt the The Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 such as 'Native Inspired'. Either something is Native designed and/or Native made or it is not.

Fakes proliferate. It is clearly unethical to play Indigenous, and even worse to cash in on it, educate or set policy.

Fakes displace true artists, educators and policy makers (even on the Fediverse). Fake Indigeneity is not victimless.

Tips for authenticating North American Indigeneity

#1 Tribal Nation connection
Native/Indigenous people are not a monolith. There are no generic Native or Indigenous people. People are citizens or descendants of a Tribal Nation or they are not North American Indigenous.

The absence of tribal connection is a major red flag.

In the United States it is illegal for an artist to represent their works as Native without Native Nation Citizenship.

Australians needed to start looking past pollination when it came to bees.

"We really don't know much about our bee fauna. Even for the species we do have a name for, we probably know next to nothing about them. Out of all the thousands of native species of bees in Australia, only about two-thirds have even been named. There are no paid bee taxonomists in Australia … it is really worrying...The flavour of research is all crop pollination."

"Australian native bees are on the whole are not important pollinators of our crops because they didn't evolve with those crops, and if we want to know about those native bees, we shouldn't be focusing on pollination...When it comes to protecting a bandicoot, nobody asks what kind of important things this bandicoot does, it is just a native animal that is struggling and needs our support. The government needed to focus more funding on ecology and conservation research."

Figbird paid a visit today.
Here’s a male Green Figbird feasting on Palm berries.

#Figbird #Australia #Native #Wildlife #Habitat #Queensland #NSW #Birds

Figbirds, (Sphecotheres vieilloti), found in eastern and northern Australia, the Kimberley region in Western Australia and in PNG on the edges of rainforests, frequent Mangrove and Melaleuca swamps, woodlands and trees in suburbia. They are sometimes nomadic, chasing fruiting trees where they mostly feed high in the canopies. Insects and seeds are also on the menu.

A number of Australian native fruit trees can only be germinated by fruit-eating birds eating their seeds. Figbirds are not endangered, having adapted well to human habitation. Plants associated with this species are: Moreton Bay Fig, Ficus macrophylla, Port Jackson Fig, and Ficus rubiginosa.

This Green Figbird male has a distinctive red patch of skin around his eyes, black head, white breast, with olive green feathers on his back. He holds a red berry in his beak, the abundant red fruit of a palm tree, seen completely filling the background of this image. Photo provided by Marj Webber.

It is important to remember this past as we celebrate with our families and bear witness to current struggles against genocide and imperialism. Around the world, Indigenous people are continuing to resist and refuse to be erased.

2020: How #NativeAmericans#RightToVote has been systematically violated for generations

In the new book Voting in Indian Country, Jean Reith Schroedel weaves together historical and contemporary voting rights conflicts as the election nears

by Nina Lakhani in New York
Fri 16 Oct 2020

"#VoterSuppression has taken centre stage in the race to elect potentially the 46th president of the United States. But we’ve heard little about the 5.2 million #Native Americans whose ancestors have called this land home before there was a US president.

"The rights of indigenous communities – including the right to vote – have been systematically violated for generations with devastating consequences for access to #CleaAir and #water, #health, #education, economic opportunities, #housing and #sovereignty. Voter turnout for Native Americans and Alaskan Natives is the lowest in the country, and about one in three eligible voters (1.2 million people) are not registered to vote, according to the National Congress of American Indians.

"In a new book, Voting in Indian County: The View from the Trenches, Jean Reith Schroedel, professor emerita of political science at Claremont Graduate University, weaves together historical and contemporary voting rights conflicts.

"Is the right to vote struggle for Native Americans distinct from the wider struggle faced by marginalized groups in the US?

"One thing few Americans understand is that American Indians and #NativeAlaskans were the last group in the #UnitedStates to get #citizenship and to get the #vote. Even after the civil war and the Reconstruction (13th, 14th and 15th) amendments there was a supreme court decision that said #IndigenousPeople could never become US citizens, and some laws used to disenfranchise them were still in place in 1975. In fact first-generation violations used to deny – not just dilute voting rights – were in place for much longer for Native Americans than any other group. It’s impossible to understand contemporary voter suppression in Indian Country without understanding this historical context.

"Why didn’t the #AmericanIndianCitizenshipAct 1924 nor the #VotingRightsAct (#VRA) 1965 guarantee Native Americans equal access to the ballot box?

"The motivation for the VRA was the egregious treatment of #black people in the south, and for the first 10 years there was a question over whether it even applied to #AmericanIndian and Native Alaskan populations. It wasn’t really discussed until a #CivilRights commission report in 1975 which included cases from #SouthDakota and #Arizona that showed equally egregious #discrimination and absolute denial of right to vote towards Native Americans – and also #Latinos.

"When voter suppression is discussed by politicians, advocates and journalists, it’s mostly about African American voters, and to a lesser degree Latinos. Why are Native Americans still excluded from the conversation?

"Firstly they are a small population and secondly most of the most egregious abuses routinely occur in rural isolated parts of #IndianCountry where there is little media focus. But it’s happening – take Jackson county in South Dakota, a state where the governor has done little to protect people from #Covid. The county council has just decided to close the legally mandated early voting centre on the #PineRidgeReservation, citing concerns about Covid, but not in the voting site in #Kadoka, where the white people go. Regardless of the intent, this will absolutely have a detrimental effect on Native people’s ability to vote. And South Dakota, like many other states, is also a very hard place for Native people to vote by mail. In the primary, the number of people who registered to #VoteByMail increased by 1,000% overall but there was no increase among reservation communities. In #Oglala county, which includes the eastern part of Pine Ridge, turnout was about 10%.

"The right to vote by mail is a hot political and civil rights issue in the 2020 election – could it help increase turnout in Indian Country?

"No, voting by mail is very challenging for Native Americans for multiple reasons. First and foremost, most reservations do not have home mail delivery. Instead, people need to travel to post offices or postal provide sites – little places that offer minimal mail services and are located in places like gas stations and mini-marts. Take the Navajo Nation that encompasses 27,425 square miles – it’s larger than West Virginia, yet there are only 40 places where people can send and receive mail. In West Virginia, there are 725. Not a single PO box on the Navajo Nation has 24-hour access."

One of my FAILED ideas... 😬

I'm not a sports person but I thought what a phenomenal way to celebrate your team or gift your sporty significant other.

Beaded earrings that are particularly suited for sports fans. If you'd like to have them make you a pair in your team colors*, @Tzipporah would be happy to do it.
