The red winged blackbirds typically don’t visit us. But today a few spent the afternoon chasing off the invasive house sparrows so they are most welcome. They are super fidgety and notoriously difficult to photograph.

The #BrownHeadedCowBird is unpopular in #birding circles. They are brood parasites meaning they sneak an egg into the nests of other birds in hopes they will raise them. Parenting flaws aside, they are pretty. And they are native, therefore protected by the migratory bird act of 1918.

Sorry, not sorry for filling your timeline with my garden photos this morning. Got to see some amazing colors & activity with insects (even in the chilly air) yesterday as I meandered through the spaces.

The Virginia creeper is going strong! Look at all those wonderful little holes & trails from insects in the leaves! Makes my heart sing, especially with the plethora of moths flitting out of my way while walking the paths.

#Gardening #PlantNative #GrowNative #Naturalist #HomeGrownNationalPark

Red leaves of Virginia creeper shade stonecrop and provide contrast to the small green things growing in the garden as fall marches on.

We're heading to Seattle soon. Haven't been there in a couple years. Their raccoons are way cooler than ours. Way more photogenic. Look at this guy!

#Raccoon #TrashPanda #naturalist #nature #wildlifephotography

A small racoon poses for a photo almost as if it had been coached. Looking a lot like a dating profile photo. Hey ladies!

Absolutely not regretting turning the Virginia creeper into a ground cover!
Aside from it's gorgeous fall colors, it's provided shade for my woodland stonecrop, traveling corridors for wildlife, food for so many moths, and more I'm sure to be forgetting to think about this morning!

#PlantNative #GrowNative #HomeGrownNationalPark #Naturalist #Gardening

A bed of red 5 leaved plants seem to fill a garden bed shading green plants beneath them. It provides a scenery of red leaves against a backup of trees and plants turning yellow in the cooler temps.

It's 52 (f) and I have the window open. It "sounds like" Spring out there. Took me a while to figure out why... I hear the Robins!

American Robins are commonly associated with Spring but are apparently here in #Missouri all year. Despite that, I typically only see/hear them in Spring and sometimes fall.

♻️ Mulch, compost, add layers, but unless you have SERIOUSLY compacted soil, don't till please. It's for the soil's sake and for the regeneration of it's biosphere that we've destroyed. ♻️

Reads:
"Another detrimental aspect of tilling is that it breaks up any existing microscopic pathways built by the organisms of the soil food web to deliver water, nutrients and oxygen. The blades of a tiller are harmful to fungi too. Although tiny, the strands of a fungus are long – relatively speaking – and can be sliced apart, reducing fungal populations. More to the point, tilling destroys about 50% of the organisms of the soil food web, according to research.

The microorganism population which requires oxygen will already be at low levels, so the last thing you want to do is further reduce the number of these good guys. Meanwhile, the only organisms thriving in the compacted layer beneath the tilled surface are the anaerobic species. Those are the bad guys – the diseases – and they will stick around long after you’ve turned off the tiller."

While I was out in the heat burning invasive plants, I questioned whether it was worth all the effort to keep coming out to treat this space without chemicals.
Then I noticed a robin going around teaching it's young how to hunt in the leaf litter and a bunny knocking over red clover stalks to eat the leaves. No poison on the food means no poison in the wildlife. Guess I'll go drink another glass of water my wild friends and continue stewarding naturally for all our future existence.

Becoming a #naturalist here in #Missouri has been quite eye-opening.

Let me share one way.

This is an educational rant about an incredibly #invasive, terrible plant: #bushhoneysuckle.

WARNING: If you read this thread you’ll be broken. Because once you know what it is, you will always see it. Everywhere.

But that’s a good thing because you can share the knowledge with others and maybe yank some, too. Thus giving #nativeplants a chance.

Anyway, proceed with caution…

I started using iNaturalist last year to make a project for our land, trying to ID things. Of course this meant I found new special interest taxa, and got very good at IDing some things. I started to get braver this year and ID for others. I decided to make a goal of going through the *entire* Alabama backlog of non-RG observations, all 318,840 of them to date. I just finished! With some strong ID statistics!
If you use iNaturalist, try to give back some and ID a few things for others, for every thing you upload. There are far more users than ID'ers, and even people who can sort things into general taxa is super helpful for the specialists who come through to ID.
If you want to learn more, there was just a great article in the NYT about iNaturalist the other day! https://tinyurl.com/yckyn3k9

@fabiomrbarbosa > #defragment my online persona

I wholeheartedly support this! If only I could figure it out myself. I feel pressure to have a very focused persona, and that if one has interests that are too widely divergent it's best to have separate handles (or friend circles) to explore them, lest we offend someone.

I'm a #neurodivergent #sex-positive #lgbtq #naturist with serious #mentalhealth issues who is ALSO a #naturalist studying #entomology. I don't know how to honor all of that.

If the first of #July be #Rainy #Weather,
It will #Rain, more or less, for 4 weeks together.

How beautifully #leaves grow old.
