It's been quite the week for our resident Goldfinch family.
One chick met an unfortunate end after crashing into a window.
Yesterday, we watched one get taken by a Sparrowhawk right in front of us in our tree.
We see one chick left ... godspeed, little one.
Fun fact: a herd of fennec foxes can take down a fully-grown rhinoceros. They often take down prey much larger than they are by using this method, and nibble the prey down to bones in minutes.

Wool Sower Wasp Galls

A tiny wasp stings the stem and deposits eggs. The eggs command the tree to grow a specific structure that encases and protects the larvae. Inside the gall the larvae look like seeds packed side by side with fuzzy tails. The cycle takes two years to complete. Though strangely parasitic, it doesn’t hurt the trees.
Another wasp evolved an ovipositor to sting the larvae within the gall and deposit eggs on THEM. Parasites have parasites.
Gelada society is based on a multi-level social system. Female geladas form the core of these societies, with groups of related females, their offspring, and one or more adult males. These groups are called reproductive units or harems.
