#NatureJournalingWeek Day 3: Aroma

"Planting a moon garden is on my bucket list, so I knew exactly what I wanted to focus on for this prompt. Night-blooming flowers are beautiful, smell amazing, and attract nocturnal pollinators like moths and bats. Goals."
– Sadie

A journal entry on fragrant night-blooming flowers features line drawings of flowers, notes, and tiny sketches of bats. Night phlox, AKA “midnight candy,” has a sweet almond and vanilla scent, like freshly baked cake. There are multiple evening primrose species native to California. Most have a sweet, slightly spicy scent thanks to the chemical linalool — which attracts pollinators but can also attract predators to the plant. Flowering tobacco has a scent similar to jasmine, and smells nothing like a pipe. Finally, the classic tuberose is a popular perfume for good reason, with a strong floral and honey scent.

#NatureJournalingWeek Day 2: Texture

"Poppies are in full bloom & manroot vines are practically taking over thanks to recent rains. I took a closer look at these abundant plants & explored different ways to depict texture — from delicate petals to intensely spiky fruit."
– Sadie

A photo of journal pages exploring the textures of California poppies and manroot. The plants are depicted in watercolor, collage, and miniature linocuts. Bright orange and blue flowers fill the background.

#NatureJournalingWeek Day 1, Color: "Before my first time handling collection specimens, I'd envisioned working with colorful poison dart frogs & red eyed tree frogs. As it turns out, the way wet specimens are prepared & stored causes color to leach out!" — Amy,
an Academy Summer Systematics intern

An image featuring two colorful frogs, and handwritten text that details Amy's thoughts on what happens to brightly colored herps as they're prepared and stored for scientific collections.
