@alexwild - any ideas what's going on in this picture? I caught a hymenoptera on my shrubby cinquefoil (whilst I was collecting Japanese Beetles) - it look like 2 other smaller insects are either trying to mate it or parasitise it.
My guess is its mating ants, but not sure of spp

Attempted to get good pictures of a Green Darner without any proper equipment (Canon eos from 2007, 18-55mm zoom lens), because I don't have proper equipment. Composition didn't turn out great but I did get a few in-focus shots that capture the wings in still motion.
Problems:
- Camera's autofocus is bad in most situations, unusable in this situation
- Sun was setting and so exposure changed drastically depending on the direction I was shooting
- Dragonflies are FAST
Solutions:
- Estimate the distance between the lens and the dragonfly when it was flying by (it had a very consistent flight path, probably patrolling its territory), then set my focal plane to specific rocks in front of me that I estimated were about the same distance.
- Turned up the ISO :( and used shutter priority mode on 1/4000th of a second to auto adjust for exposure. The aperture always stayed between 5.6 and 7.0 for this, which was fine for the photos I was aiming to take.
- I was sitting on dirt/gravel to be at the right level, so I would track the dragonfly constantly, and whenever it came close I would start taking pictures, and use my feet to pivot around on the dirt as it flew in circles around me. Most of the time I wasn't even looking at the viewfinder when taking a picture, I would track it through the viewfinder beforehand, but as it got close I would just look at it around the camera to keep better track of it, and hope it was in the shot, which worked out pretty well.
In total, I took about 250 photos, these are the photos that I find satisfactory.

In the morning I can always find at least 15 variegated meadowhawks in these trees, both males and females. As you can see in the last picture, the females often fight each other, not sure exactly why, maybe some branches are better perches than others?
