Tudela is a #municipality in #Spain, the second largest city of the #autonomousCommunity of #Navarre and twice a former Latin bishopric. Its population is around 35,000. The city is sited in the #Ebro valley. Fast trains running on two-track electrified railways serve the city and two freeways (AP 68 and AP 15) join close to it. Tudela is the capital of the agricultural region of Ribera Navarra, and also the seat of the courts of its judicial district. The poet #AlTutili.

I wrote a blog post summing up my research trip this summer in Pamplona where I was looking at booksellers, private library inventories, and literacy. I talk a bit more about what I learned in terms of how my documents work than the content (hopefully future blog posts will be about that!), but it was helpful to think through what I learned that wasn't just "what happened in 17th-century Navarre?"

The Path To The Seashore

Heavenly sunset along the Gulf Islands National Seashore. I enjoy all of the Emerald Coast, but there is something special about the undeveloped, untouched white sand beaches met by the clear emerald-colored waters.

3. Traveling booksellers still had a legitimate role to play in the ecosystem though at least from the government's standpoint. In Estella case, while that bookseller was able to get the privilege for the city, and no one else was allowed to sell particular items except him, everywhere else in the surrounding "county" (merindad) things were to proceed as normal, which I understand to mean that anyone could sell them. So travelling booksellers were serving the rural parts of the merindad where a permanent bookseller might not have enough business to survive.

2. Permanent booksellers are *not* fans of traveling booksellers. Booksellers in Pamplona, Estella, and Tudela complained about "marchantes" and "buhoneros" coming to their cities to sell the same sorts of ephemeral works that the Hospital General was cranking out. And these "outsiders" were undercutting them. Estella bookseller managed to get privilege for selling works in the city; Tudela bookseller it's unclear if he got it, but he used the Estella bookseller's case to support his own.

#OnThisDay in #history - in 1415 Eleanor of #Castile, Queen of #Navarre, died around age 52. She hated living in Navarre (forced to marry and leave home around age 12) and after 13 years there moved back to Valladolid. She was forced by her nephew (then king of Castile) to return to Navarre in 1395, and had her coronation as queen in 1403. Afterwards, she seems to have made her peace with Navarre and served as regent in her husband's absences.
