@looneybyron yeah it's very difficult to talk about outside of disability advocacy spaces. people aren't even aware of how much internalized shame they have about disability & how much they project that onto other people. my family is in my opinion pretty obviously #ND but they're not diagnosed either. they actually tested me for #ADHD but said I wasn't because I didn't fidget a lot.

Would like to hear from both within and outside the #neurodiverse community about something that upsets me: I hate seeing REEEEEEE as mockery every time I’ve seen it over the years. Not going to disagree with the principle here, but I can't resist adding this comment:
The kind of people who are verbally abusive, even if you get them to change words, will still be conveying the same feelings. "#Autistic" becomes another four-letter word for them.
I've had no significant change in the number of encounters with asshats who feel the need to denigrate others since D-day. Plus, I never had to deal with fake sympathy, bad takes on #ND, and higher-order categorical rejection or exclusion before.
In fact, now those types also make slurs when some skill or knowledge is exposed that is superior to them, like "fucking rainman", "wonder boy", etc.
I don't think this is a black & white binary issue. There are definitely some benefits, but there are also new negatives, and other things that don't change.

It was recently explained to me that when I try to express mild #friendship interest in someone, it comes across as being cold / disinterested, but when I try to express strong friendship interest in someone, it's usually misinterpreted as a crush / #romantic interest. 😭

I asked for a breakdown of the charges, since presumably mgmt have access to the account. They said I need to set up an account…back and forth and back and forth.
I’m a rule follower, so getting threatening letters about the gas meter potentially getting ripped out if the bills continue to go unpaid is really trying my #ND sense of justice today, since I have no way of knowing how much of the bill I’m responsible for until I see a summary of charges.

My partner feels it extra hard. The fact that I’m #ND makes it easier for me to hunker down and keep going, even in the face of all the peer pressure. But, for her, it’s more common to experience bitter resentment for all the things we “can’t” do bc of #Covid.
This has caused some arguments between us, because it’s not always easy for me to relate to her point of view. In essence, I’m in the “I want to stay alive and healthy to see a better tomorrow, and idc what everyone else is doing” camp.
Need advice from #autistic, #adhd and other #neurodivergent people on communicating with #nd friends, family and life partners about difficult topics.
How do you feel about using text or email instead of face to face?
Sometimes it seems that text allows the other person time to process, avoids auditory processing issues, gives time and space to deal with RSD, side steps issues of "can't help interrupting".
But it can seem like a cowardly "drop and run" truth bomb, be a way to avoid listening, avoid conflict while still getting your word in.

To my dear autistic community, I’m curious.
Do you have one strictly dominant hand? (Whether left or right). Are you ambidextrous, meaning you can use either hand for any activity equally well? Or are you mixed-handed, also known as having cross-dominance? Meaning you favour one hand for certain tasks and the opposite hand for others.
I grew up thinking I was some off-brand of ambidextrous, not having heard of cross-dominance until my late 20s. I write with my left but am naturally inclined to use my right for a lot of other tasks. It appears there may be a link between both left-handedness and ‘atypical handedness’ in general and being autistic. I also suspect I have undiagnosed dyspraxia which, who knows, may be connected.
My Mum, younger sister and I are all left-handed (as well as being ND) but I don’t actually know anyone that is mixed-handed.

@micah Like you, I experience some things other #ND people do, others I don’t. And there’s doubt too. So, similarities with you. But I bet differences as well. I concentrated too much at first on the diagnosis - or label, as I now call it. What matters is my experience. I decided I want to identify as #ND. And I could tell others about my differences, and ask people to make allowances for things that freaked me. Which has reduced my inner tension and made me happy with “me.”

Yeah, and the tone they took with me, demanding payment when I'd already paid a $15 fee to hold the appointment (which I would not get back even if I went to the appointment) that they cancelled out of pettiness... It's also incredibly unprofessional to be talking to me about their personal problems when we're discussing my appointment.
They are #ND themselves, but that does not excuse this kind of behavior -- I cried hard, and though I would never pay the fee for the appointment I had cancelled on me for no good reason, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there -- especially highly conscientious ND folks -- who might feel obligated to pay it, even if $80 is a big spend for them like it is for me.
I'm going to figure something out, even if it's just finding a reputable place that takes a payment plan. Thanks for validating <3

I remember now! So... CW... Pain, suffering, trauma... Because I am now having to ask questions about *is this ND or normal or just awful* ... Emotional pain from loss, grief, seeing someone in extreme pain, or a furry friend, all I know is it hurts so bad inside that I simply cannot emotionally and mentally handle it and I don't know if it is self-activated or if I consciously activate it, but there seems to be a little switch in my brain sort of like a thermostat, too much pain triggers it, and I sort of go emotionless. The cries of distress from #ND twitter because moving to new platform is hard make me sad. A lot of us ND folk (#autistic #ADHD #AuDHD etc) can't make the move easily. It's hard to change important routines, we have limited spoons, and many of us have executive function issues, not to mention the cognitive challenge of creating a new mental model for the unfamiliar network and how it works. Now that some of us have climbed that ladder, let's extend a helping hand to those struggling to make the climb. We aren't done moving until our community is rebuilt!
Many hands make light work, and whitewashing this fence looks like a whole lot of fun! I propose we start a #NDMoveHelp hashtag on twitter that ND folk can use to offer or request some help. Like, "Anyone need some #NDMoveHelp today?" or "I'm freaking out I need some #NDMoveHelp plz!" No need for a complicated system, just some self-organizing community aid that lets people find each other.
My brilliant plan:
1. outreach here on mastodon to enlist helpers;
2. helpers tweet about it on twitter with hashtag #NDMoveHelp to offer help;
3. check on the hashtag to find folks asking for help, connect and help them get moved

People always seem to be trapped by the paradox of wanting creative works that are i. commercial (pander to expectations) and ii. 'think outside the box' (defy expectations). #Neurodivergents are hardwired outside of the box & I think more original thinkers (#ND or not) should be promoted in commercial contexts just to see if their stuff finds an audience, perhaps even encouraging new ways of thinking about books/films/arts. We need to take more risks
#Introduction hello humans! I spend most of my time caring for my #ASD #ADHD and #dyslexic kid and husband and I'm always looking for new ways to understand them better and to try to make the world a more accepting and kinder place for them and all people with differences.
I'm also #ND and have #depression and am a strong advocate for mental illness awareness and acceptance. Also #TransRights and #DisabilityRights are important to me too.
