The unspoken corollory whenever anyone scoffs and says "that doesn't mean you have [insert #MentalHealth condition]" or "that doesn't mean you need [insert #disability accommodation]" is that they -- or someone else very close to them (perhaps a child, partner, or sibling) -- also face the same issue, and have been forced to do so without supports.

As frustrating and infuriating as such people are, I find it absolutely fascinating when I am able to then step back, observe their behaviour, and see sign after sign that they're dealing with untreated #neurodivergence ... and doing it poorly.

During the last talk yesterday, my teacher told us about another Zen Master. He was telling us about living your life authentically. He was using the other Zen Master as an example of how someone who has attained status can live authentically without letting status go to his head. He was describing his behavior.

Guess what?

That other Zen Master sounded #ActuallyAutistic. I don't wish to go into details, but the man was extremely shy, for one thing. There were other traits than shyness, however. I thought "autistic" but other neurodivergences are possible.

@chrislw i was in my early 30s when i began suspecting something wasn't right. i knew i was different but chalked it up to being a nerd until i began running into problems and they grew bigger and bigger. i saw a psychiatrist in public healthcare about it. he dismissed #ADHD and said i had mild #ASD, but didn't seem very confident about it. there's no treatment for that and it isn't supposed to cause much trouble so i just kept trying to work for the next ~5 years.

i landed what i thought was a good job with nice colleagues, but felt myself beginning to struggle again, and that's when i contacted an independent psychiatrist with ADHD expertise to get a second opinion. he dismissed the ASD diagnosis and concluded it was ADHD, and he seemed confident about that.

the ADHD part always seemed to match me better, but i'm thinking there's some ASD in there as well, seeing as a lot of nerds are on the spectrum. the label AuDHD feels fitting here. some kind of #neurodivergence. spicy brain.

I hate my brain.

I haven't eaten real food in a couple days because people in my house cooked and didn't tell me, so by the time I realize there's food, it's cold as fuck and my brain is like:

"it'll take 20 minutes for the oven to reach temperature so you can put the food in to reheat which will also take 15 minutes. Though, this kinda food doesn't taste very good reheated so are you really gonna wanna eat it in 35 minutes? Or do you want to spend the 35 minutes cooking something else and then have to hear that person go 'What about the food I cooked?!?'"

So I'm like NEITHER! No food it is!🤦‍♂️🙄

Does anyone else suffer from what I am going to call Index Failure? I can't recall things that I know. For instance, when wondering what to cook for dinner, I can't bring to mind the list of things I know and like to cook. If I sit at a piano, I can't remember the songs that I know I can play - if someone names a song that I know, then I can play it, but before then, I can't bring to mind the fact that I know it. Do other people have this? Is this normal? Is this a #neurodivergence thing?

I really appreciate you doing so. Tim @MaJ1 is not the only one among my contacts who has been late diagnosed with #ASD/#autism or some other #neurodivergence within my contacts or their relatives here during the last year. In fact, my not small "sample" of contacts is so skewed towards neurodivergence that I have begun to wonder whether there might be so many more instances in ral life where people simply don't know of or share their condition.

I feel like this applies to a LOT of people, but especially my fellow #ADHDers

A curious story about me and one of my oldest pot coasters. Probably in a way a story of #NeuroDivergence as well, because I kept these.

These pieces of wood used to be the same piece until I was able to break it in half with my fist in karate. This was the first time I was able to do that so I kept the pieces.

They have served us well as pot coasters for well over 15 years now. They have been in family Christmas tables and birthdays and in everyday use.

To this day, sometimes when I use them, I think to myself: I did that, how cool.

Two pieces of a wood plank with a break in the middle that would join the pieces and fit together if the pieces were pushed together. The wood is stained in many places with foodstuffs and hot pots, they look like they have seen life.

@ReimanSaara It’s the same issue we often face just being recognized by NT. “You can’t be autistic… you can speak and look into my eyes…” There may certainly be commonalities but we are diverse in our #neurodivergence. It makes sense that the way we #stim doesn’t fit into neat preconceived boxes.
