As a neurodivergent who slightly identifies as queer but is strongly inspired by the queer movement, I can see the parallel (link in post 2/2).
Because the "popularisation" of being #neurodivergent makes us forget that the #neurodiversity movement is a struggle against the white cisheteropatriarchy and its coercive system (which is implemented at all social levels).
And that I have strong allies, including men, in the communist or communitarian #anarchist movement and probably elsewhere.

Autistic people experience psychosis far more often than you would realise.
We have to start talking about it.

I took the kids to a great workshop today run by local #Norwich author, Louise Gooding. It was about her new book, Wonderfully Wired Brains, which is a really fun and uplifting exploration of #neurodiversity. We all came away feeling like we had superpowers!

The same outward behavior can have different internal motivations and be very different because of them.
If you do something to avoid someone else getting on your case, is it fawning?
I think it's not fawning if you're fully aware of what's going on and making a conscious choice.
I think it is fawning if you're doing it as a reflexive stress response.
There may be even further nuance. What do you think?

This is good. And new to me, thanks to figuring out my #adhd and not trying to do too much at once and burn out in a few years.
But, next year... I was already offered that I could just keep on working. My thesis is coming up and I am already very tired when I work full time for the summer.
Taking more student loan isn't appealing either. There is a possibility to work 50%, but I am not at all sure my spoons would be enough to study even then. If I work, that takes my everything.
I have no degrees, but so many unfinished studies, from biology to coaching. Always went to work and stayed there, the studies always got left behind.
Would like to finish something for once. Would like to keep this up. But would also love to afford food.
I don't know which wolf I should listen to. Probably the one that knows that I should just either work or study, not both. Realistically I can't do both.
#AdultStudent #StudentLoan #NeuroDiversity #spoons

@joshsusser the other big one is #neurodiversity - inextricable from the social model really, but still necessary.
I facilitate the #neurodiversity affinity group at my school. We met today and one of the students told me about this collection of videos. It's an amazing archive.
https://neurodiversity.engr.uconn.edu/media/videos/
We also watched part of this great video about portrayals of #ADHD in media:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVjWlEVUzAU&ab_channel=HowtoADHD
Feel badly now. I was excited to help support an employee group around #neurodiversity. Unfortunately it quickly resulted in my being pinged by folks about the setting up of a meeting. I rapidly went into #anxiety and just tapped out. My son, less frequently now, talks about feeling like a #failure. This is that feeling. It sucks. I need to give myself the space to accept my limits and be kinder to myself, but right now I may just have to wallow in it a bit. #ActuallyAutistc @actuallyautistic
I had all the spoons I needed today, so if you had no spoons, or not enough, this is your reminder that the spoons do sometimes come back. I can't promise they'll stay, for you or for me, but they do come back.

Have you completed a sensory review lately?
When I finally understood I was neurodivergent, I felt like I was finally receiving the user manual to my brain.
However, when I opened it...some of the pages were still blank. I had to go through a journey of self-enquiry and self-awareness to fill in some of the blanks.
One of the blanks I needed to fill was around my sensory needs. What senses do I enjoy and why? What are my sensory absolute NOs to avoid or mitigate?
As part of coaching with me, the early part of the coaching work is very often a phase of discover and self-assessment. One of the things we deliberately review is your senses in order to help you fill in some of the blank pages of your brain's user manual.
Knowledge is absolutely power when it comes to your sensory profile. Once you know what you want more of and what you want to avoid or dampen in your senses, you can goal-set around adjustments you'd like to set.
So...how far along are you on this journey?
Below, I'm sharing some snippets from a tool I am currently building to help my clients review their sensory profile.
Share your favourite sensory icks and must-avoids with me below!

What's one thing you're preparing for?
I have been thinking A LOT about arousal.
No, get your minds out of the gutter :D
I mean arousal in the psychological sense.
Arousal in psychology can be understood as your levels of excitement or energy, and it's often linked with your emotional state.
I have been thinking about arousal for two reasons. One, it's very personal to me because I have just been ill, and because I am currently not taking medication for my ADHD as I need to find a better fit for me.
Two, I think about this topic A LOT because it's something that occurs at some point in many of the coaching discussions that I have.
If you want to understand your arousal levels and also discover how you can engineer them or harness them to your advantage, then the research (thank you, sports science!) tells us that self-awareness is the first step to making progress.
In other words, to make progress here, most people benefit from a discovery phase where you can think about what energises you or wakes you up, and why.
It's possible to do some of this through journalling and reflection. It can also be really helpful to have someone take you through this process. A coach, for example, can ask you a series of questions that are designed to pull out the intelligence you need about your arousal and what increases it and decreases it.
If you would like to work with someone to help you gain clarity on excitement, energy and emotions, then I will have two coaching places coming up in the next few weeks. Get your name onto my waiting list and ask for a free consult to see how I might be able to help you make sense of what is going on for you.
There are then specific arousal-raising activities we can put in place that match what we uncover in the coaching conversations.
What are you wondering about your arousal levels? Comment below!

Me describing #ADHD: It's a bit like having 20 televisions on, all the time, knowing you HAVE to be able to describe the plot of any one of the episodes to somebody later, or they will think you don't care about them or have any interest in them.
Well-meaning client: Well, everybody gets distracted when things get busy. I know I feel like that sometimes.

I wish we in the #NeurodiversityMovement are going to find a solution so that humen can more easily find and build #NeurodiverseGroups and teams in whatever situation.
I believe we have a strength to see things which other people can't because of the "they think that they are normal" thing, and "they don't feel they have anything to search for in that regard"...
...while we in the #Neurodiversity #Movement know that there are many #neurotypes and our job is to find them so that we can build even more #neurodiverse #groups, thus strenghtening the neurodiversity in those groups...
...which can apply to literally any kind of humen on #PlanetEarth who decide to form a team/group/company/younameit to collaborate together.

The legendary Wenn Lawson worked on this new free online course on autism and mental health from Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia.
According to the description:
"This course has been developed in response to the growing need to provide autistic people and those around us with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to feel good about autism and celebrate individuality, strengths and skills, as well as being pro-active about our mental fitness and identifying when we need support.
The course aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to:
• Explore monotropism as a theory of autism, and how being monotropic (single-focused) impacts autistic people
• Understand interoception and how your internal sensing system impacts your life, as well as ways to recognise signals from this system
• Learn about the impact of sensory overload on mental health
• Explore what mental fitness looks like and learn strategies for good mental health
• Understand and identify risk factors for autistic burnout
• Recognise and implement strategies for self-care and self-advocacy"

- Use Pomodoro
- Take more breaks
- Best meeting times vary by person, try end-of-day scrum meetings
- Schedule focus time
- Use checklists/tooling for extrinsic motivation
- Effect is different/personal for everybody
- Eat the frog
- There are many of us/we are not alone
- Promise renegotiated is not promise broken
In what ways do you find it difficult to function that neurotypicals often don't notice or think about?
For me, the most obvious (and painful) is the amount of light in public spaces. But when I mention it, they often seem surprised.
Or finding it almost impossible to read while other things are going on around me. I love public libraries for the communal book sharing, but I've always struggled to read or study in them.

A few days ago I read a piece about #NeuroDiversity and #adhd in particular that stated how dopamine is produced by either motivation or fear. To simplify. Like the drive to do stuff can be triggered purely by fear. Be it of failure or anything.
It haunts me now thinking about my late identified audhd and the whole "high performing" thing or "but you are doing so well" thing. And how this is gendered and how so often women with adhd/audhd are not diagnosed or validated because they "do so well". Yet it is all there.
Think about the amount of fear, trauma, masking and harmful learnt behaviours there has to be and where it has come from to produce one "high performing" neurodivergent person? It's all invisible harm that produces an indivual who seemingly does sort of ok in todays world. The implications of this are so violent in nature it makes me shiver.
So, hey, asking for a friend, but has anyone written stuff about caring for aging parents from the perspective of a neurodiverse son/daughter/enby?
(it me. the friend is me.)
Tanya Adkin - Autistic consultant, trainer, advocate. has written about this. Masking isn't necessarily about appearing more neurotypical. It's about projecting an acceptable front to your environment.
