#today #BeetBear and I decided to see how the carrots we planted in April were doing. Not too bad as it turns out! These are a Chantenay-type called "Moonraker". I grow them in a pot because my garden soil is NOT good at producing decent carrots. These days I plant in a pot and let them get on with it all summer. Pictures show newly sprouted, mid-season, and harvest. The crop will provide many servings between now and winter. We pull them as needed.

We managed another 53 "almost-ripe" stragglers bringing our total of squashes harvested to 225 from our squash patch. I've got 50 of the best ones stashed away for our own use over the coming months and the rest went to neighbors and family. We also set out some more veg. for the neighbors.

♥ Hurricane Lee became a Tropical Storm here and now unlikely 2 affect anyone in my family
♥ Today was another productive day! (yesterday actually - I fell asleep b4 posting)
♥ I gave 2 beds to an immigrant from the city some of my greatgrandparents immigrated to 100 years ago, and my grandfather grew up. They were so incredibly thankful saying I "saved them." I felt embarassed, but giving them away instead of selling them was a very good thing. Heart full.

Here’s a decent ios app that’s just for keeping track of hurricanes and tornadoes. Not sure if there’s an android version. They share outlooks, forecasts, radar, satellite images, severe warnings (very detailed), sea temperatures.

I got #maxixe at the farmer's market this morning. It was new to me, but apparently not to #NewEngland: "This crop was grown extensively in New England in the 18th and 19th centuries..."
A neighbor told me how to make it, lightly fry with some of the usual garlic, onion, salt, pepper sort of thing. Others said it was like cucumber, so I might try one raw.
I've been working with her & a dog trainer and I am very optimistic she's going to get more comfortable and sure of herself. She's responded really well to clicker training, and she's very food motivated!
I am willing to drive ANYWHERE in New England to help find a good home for her (hey, I offered to drive 1/2-way across the US to get our other dog back to her old person in CA!).

She is a darling wire-haired terrier/dachshund cross. She's incredibly sweet with us and very attached and affectionate (really, she's like a cat sometimes), but she is quite nervous and anxious around new people, even ones she has met several times.

This is really, really hard. Luckily one of them is going back to my GF's ex-husband (which is an excellent thing) but I need to find a new home for Bella.

#today we just ended our cornfest 2023. Our total ears of #sweetcorn brought to the table from the #garden this season was 197. This is not bad but our third planting ended up a little disappointing because I did not manage to feed the last row of corn enough for a variety of reasons, but lesson is learned for next year! (If I count the 4 ears the squirrels stole we grew 201 ears) Oh, yes, we also have several tons of #tomatoes (lost count)

The other night I took a friend out to photograph sunset here in Maine. We decided to head to Pine Point in Scarborough. The sky set up beautifully and eventually ignited into a blast of reds, yellows, oranges, pinks, and purples. Amazing. #today I continued to move the composted corn stalk shreddings out to the garden as mulch. You can see all the shrew activity in the shot of the top of the pile when the carpet is removed. (The shrews are ok, they just move into the next pile. Pix also show the obligatory volunteer compost tomato. Stuff was shredded last September and piled up here to sit over the winter. Turned once with a pitchfork in April and now done.
