I think it's kinda interesting that #Nintendo decided to patch the several item duplication glitches in #TearsOfTheKingdom.

I never used them, probably never would have, but I don't give a fuck if anybody else did.

It's a single player game. And the glitches were obscure enough to not do them by accident.

And still: They did patch them! Why?! Who cares?

I'm really hoping that #Nintendo's next console is just an upgraded Switch that stays backwards compatible. Just give us a Switch with a beefier GPU and joy cons that last longer than a year before drifting. That's the entire assignment. That's all you have to do.

My son is over and we're playing a bunch of games. My current favorite (and also one of his) is the INCREDIBLE roguelike Death Road to Canada. And like it sounds, you're fighting pixelated digital zombies in the apocalypse, trying to make your way to the safety of Canada. This game is SO fun and replayable (but beatable, we've beaten it three times since he's been here) and I suspect it would make an EXCELLENT party game. Up to four players can jump in and out. Every game is random and you don't win every time, but it's so wild and really hilarious too. I won this game in a giveaway and was pretty psyched but had no idea it was such a great game. Just a blast. You can even make your own characters too (and you'll meet some familiar ones), as you grab buffs, upgrades, and all KINDS of weapons. There's some really cool decision making involved along the way, along with skill you learn and luck you hope to have. Onward to Canada!

I don't know if you're gonna be FORCED to update your 3DS with this new update (that Nintendo seriously just put out now, MONTHS after closing the eshop), but if you're into the homebrew stuff and you can avoid updating, looks like it's best to avoid it. OK can I take a moment and come back to #Nintendo for a second… So they killed the 3DS EShop a while back, making it impossible to buy or download any digital games… But, even though the system is end of life they just went out of their way to release a firmware update to patch the exploit people used to play their games (as in the ones they purchase in the past or maybe ones they never got to play because they only had a digital release). IMO this is easily one of the most user hostile companies in the world.

@thomzane on oldskool systems, #samples are a mess. hardware like the #NES has dedicated sample hardware called DPCM (delta PCM) or some people call it DMC, you get these 1-bit bitstreams that tell the waveform whether it goes up or down over time, and then the hardware can play that back without much resource drain. When you use #famitracker, you can just load a WAV into a slot and for the most part (barring memory limitations) it automagically prepares it for playback.

Two other ways to do samples on #retro (which are closer to what *modern* hardware does) are either (1) to play the lowest note on the hardware where the sound wave for the square wave "sticks" high or low, and vary the volume to the level of the samples, or (2) use PWM, where rather than varying the amplitude of the wave (which is how you'd visualize it on a scope) you use another 1-bit bitstream and the length of time spent on a high or a low would pull the speaker in that direction for that amount of time, and the amount of time is so incredibly small that the speaker might not make it all the way to the other extreme before it gets sent in the other direction by the opposite bit.

Duke NES'em 3D was one of the first NES #chiptunes I ever wrote, so the song was written in soundtracker, and I used a bunch of shell scripts and compilers to compile it into an NSF.

For the voices themselves, first I got Jon St. John (Duke Nukem Himself) to record the lines. Then, to be honest I did a whole lot of bumping around in the dark. I didn't really know what I was doing, other than that I knew the hardware wouldn't push out a full-quality WAV. I somehow found that using a 3-bit amplitude worked out really well. Reflecting, the octal thing was almost definitely a mistake, because that's 3-bit and the amplitude on the square waves can be 4-bit. Maybe I just mis-entered the bit depth to convert the WAV I got from Jon? There was some PWM employed as well because I then converted the sample data to a macro that would get pushed out of a square wave channel rather than the sample channel. It..... kinda worked out? If you think it sounds good, I probably just threw my hands in the air and said "good enough" because the voice was one of the last things I added to the track.

So there you go! My method is NOT the way I would recommend doing it, or the way most people do it these days, but that's how you get that exact result.

And here is the finished product! I sourced a speaker from an old netbook and did have some difficulties with solder. Had to cut a bit more of the shell since figured that is easier than adjusting the solder...

The LED plastic piece escaped so I had to redo screwing the controller board. I even got the original device number sticker off the original and glued it to the new shell. That got slightly messy, too much glue.

Very happy with the result!

It is way over ten years since I last modded any Game Boy. And almost 20 years since I last did something to improve a display (installed Afterburner to a GBA). Haven't done a lot of this kind of modding!

This is going to be a white original DMG with original buttons. Display is Funnyplaying IPS. Not complete yet, still need to solder a speaker and need to swap the backside as well.

Two hours into Zelda and I'm already dead thrice: once by falling into the void, one with a pebble thrown by an enemy, and one by freezing into the water. You can say I'm pretty terrible at videogames 😆

In my defense, it's my first Zelda apart of a few hours on Ocarina of Time on an emulator, and it's the first time I play on the Switch.

I'm usually really bad at videogames so it's probably gonna take me a year of two for me to finish this 🙈
