John Wilder, developer of #TV's #SpenserForHire called #RobertBParker's #Spenser #Noir #Fiction. I think Wilder innocently confused noir w/ #Hardboiled. Noir is bleak, fatalist, about protagonists who try to get out from under only to sink deeper into their predicaments. Hardboiled is more open to stories of protagonists who make their way through harsh environments and manage to remain unscathed. As #RaymondChandler put it, "Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean."
Nearly done posting everything on the audio #podcast
I am planning on releasing a Halloween episode to kick off the next phase of stories.
You get me cold reading a #firstdraft story written in one sitting based on a few words.
"You wake up with the answer to the question that everyone asks. The answer is Yes, and the answer is Just Like Here But Worse. That's all the insight you'll ever get. So you might as well go back to sleep."
The Hunter (AKA Point Blank, 1962), the first hardboiled novel featuring his anti-hero Parker written by Donald E. Westlake as Richard Stark. A very hard-edged roller-coaster ride with cold-blooded disturbingly casual violence. A great book.
A.D.G.: Die Nacht der kranken Hunde
With more news on the risks of the brain implant technology from the #elsonmusk #startup #neuralink, I am reminded of my novel NO HARD FEELINGS which discusses the unintended consequences/misuse of technology from a fictional startup in the same space Neurostimix.

Ein #Coutry-Noir, also.

happy #ncbd to DEATH DROP: DRAG ASSASSIN #2! if you’re swinging by your #lbcs, you can now pick up the second instalment of this queer crime noir by David Hazan, Lucas Gattoni and yours truly from Scout Comics- would love to hear what you think! ✨💅✨
Today's author is Craig Johnson, author of the Longmire books, which were made into a TV series on A&E.
My photo of Craig was taken at the LA Times Festival of Books when we were both signing in the Mystery Bookstore booth. It's a rare picture of him without his cowboy hat!
I’m heading down to London this week for #concept101 , (it will be my first industry event!) made this piece a bit last minute when I realised they were running a competition but here is my ‘Emissary from another world’, going for an old school #scifi #noir thing 👽
Today's writer is Christa Faust, author of MONEY SHOT. To quote from her website:
"Writer. Pervert. Strong female character."
I took my photo of her at the LA Times Festival of Books.
CON ARTISTS, CRYPTIDS, AND A CARNIVAL with some hidden secrets converge on rural West Virginia in this stylish noir thriller, part of a multi-book anthology series. Smart, atmospheric writing. B PLUS
Recently finished An Honest Profession and Stolen Coast by Dwyer Murphy. These books really move along, really solid noir. They also provoke these seemingly unrelated contrasts for me: super evocative of places while spinning a hardboiled plot; absorbing pacing while the characters are easygoing. Amazing that Murphy holds those disparate pieces together.
Only note I'd offer is that they feature New York and the coast of MA respectively. Choosing New York for An Honest Profession was a bit frustrating, probably no other city has featured more widely in lit. I'd love to read some noir in Lagos or Jakarta by some local writers, something evocative of urban spaces with local meanings.
Today's author is Sue Grafton.
This picture was used by a number of news outlets when she passed in 2017.
I took the photo at a #boucheron conference when she was signing (with a tremendously long line of fans waiting for her) down the table from me in the book room.
Today's author is Joe Gores.
Joe was one of only three authors to receive Edgar Awards (the crime fiction Oscar) in three separate categories.
He was also an expert on Dashiell Hammett's THE MALTESE FALCON. Read my interview with him about the FALCON and the prequel to the book the Hammett family asked him to write here:
Today's author is James Ellroy.
I'm posing with him at an event for his novel THIS STORM.
I asked Ellroy to sign my copy of STORM, as well as the 5th volume of The New Black Mask where he had a story. I mentioned to him that my first August Riordan story was in the 4th volume, prompting him to write, “You now rule Black Mask!!” as the inscription.
Officially signed a book contract for a Bigfoot horror novel 😯 Not something I thought I wanted to do until the publisher reached out asking if I had something, and it came to me in a flash. Now I'm psyched!
I'm not ready to share plot details, but if you want something gory and unique in the Bigfoot / Sasquatch realm, I think you'll like it.
Will also help if you enjoy noir mysteries and reading about main characters with disabilities... 😉

The Demons of Montmartre is now available to buy!
This is the latest book in my romantic noir urban fantasy series that starts with The Demons of Wall Street. Available in paper and ebook formats from @MirrorWorldPub and the usual online stores.
@the_etrain If I may, a #Paranormal #Noir (#ParaNoirmal) podcast concerning the origins of Pumpkin Spice, and its ill effects on the fae population.
I'm really enjoying the #CoffeeZilla #YouTube channel. The #noir #cyberpunk #Bladerunner esthetic, his dedication to his investigations, sense of humor, and particularly the insight into this new #crypto based #ponzi world, where systems have become #unregulated and #democratized to the point that complete bloody morons and charlatans build enormous sandcastles that get blown down with a single "rug".
The last seedy dregs of Times Square, circa 1980.
If someone doesn't use 'Tango Palace' as the title of a hard-boiled novel, I'll have to.

One week till the release of The Demons of Montmartre, fourth in my romantic noir urban fantasy series from Mirror World.
Happy to send the first volume ebook, The Demons of Wall Street, free on request.
Another recent read is SA Cosby's excellent ALL THE SINNERS BLEED.
One thing I found interesting was how he wove in a discussion of the role of mortuaries in small communities (given that his wife owns a funeral home).
Read an in-depth profile of him here:
I'm quite enjoying Adrian McKinty's latest Sean Duffy novel, DETECTIVE UP LATE.
After struggling to survive on the income from the first 6 novels in the series, McKinty fell back to working as a bartender and an Uber driver.
Then Don Winslow helped him out with an introduction to a new agent and he produced 2019's thriller THE CHAIN, which was a smash hit.
Read an interview with McKinty here:

Book 2 for Aug 2023
The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett
This is a well known story, more from the movie adaptations (especially the third one, the one with Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade)
It is quite entertaining and Dashiell has a great descriptive ability. There are no surprises if you have seen any of the movies but it is still worth a read (I read it to relax as a break from a much more serious book that I am currently working through)

I'm still doing some summer murder reading. Here's a line from The High Window that only Chandler could write: "From 30 feet away she looked like a lot of class. From 10 feet away she looked like something made up to be seen from 30 feet away"
I'm delighted to announce the opening of preorders for my latest romantic noir urban fantasy novel, The Demons of Montmartre, fourth in the series that begins with The Demons of Wall Street.
From Mirror World:
Let’s talk about Border. I’m obsessed with this film; I just keep thinking about it. I know it’s five years old, but I just watched it now because it was on Channel 4 (in the UK). It has such a profound effect on me—I don’t even want to say too much because if you haven’t seen it yet, anything I could say would be a spoiler.
