New Orleans' electric grid needs a rebuild. Who will pay for it? https://www.nola.com/news/business/who-will-pay-to-bolster-new-orleans-electric-grid/article_a054dcb8-9130-11ee-8d22-b7cd71acf51a.html One of the biggest #NOLA problems besides geology and geography remains its crumbling infrastructure. A for-profit electrical power provider Entergy doesn’t really care. The people of New Orleans are screwed.

Back in the pool today. I realized I wouldn't like one of those pools where you swim against the current. What I like is the feeling I'm gliding through the water like a wind-up toy fish in a bathtub.
The back injury in June is mostly just a memory, but I'm still working to regain the stamina I lost. I did 1240 yards in 40 minutes, slow and only my minimum, but I'm in the water.

"Jas Parade" with genuine "jas band", New Orleans, 23 November 1916.

We started the "jas age" early in New Orleans, even if we weren't sure how to spell it.

@noladon
#NewOrleans #jazz #jazzHistory #NOLA

text newspaper article:

WILL GIVE "JAS PARADE."

Stage Hands Plan to Utilize New Orléans Material for Parade Before Dance.

Theatrical journals have taken cognizance of the “jas bands” and at first these organizations of syncopation were credited with having originated in Chicago, but any one over having frequented the “tango belt” of New Orleans knows thal the real home of the "Jas bands" right here. However, it remains for the artisans of the stage to give formal _recognition to the "jas bands" of New Orleans. The day of the "Stage Workers'" annual masquerade ball, which is November 23, the stage employees of the city are going to traverse the city led by & genuine and typical “Jas band.” Just where and when those bands, until this winter known only to New. Orleans, originated, is a disputed question. It is claimed they are the. outgrowth of the so-callad . ‘flsh. bands” of the lake front camps, Saturday and Sunday night affairs.
However, the fact remains that their popularity. has already. reached Chicago and that New York probably will be invaded next. But, be that as it may, the fact remains that only and original are to be found here and here alone. The "boys behind the scenes” have named their parade the "Jas Parade." It's going to be an automobile affair with the actors and actresses of the various theaters behind the band. The ball is to be at the Washington Artlllery.

2010 or so, I was walking to a conference at the #NOLA convention center when I noticed a crowd of people in a side street. "One please"

Funny thing… when I was a kid our phone number was one number off from Martin Bros., and they were open 24 hours. Sometimes in the middle of the night our phone would ring, Dad would groggily answer it, then take their order and tell them it'd be ready for pickup in 20 minutes.

#LAwx #NOLA Heavy rain is expected next week in association with a developing area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico. While widespread rain amounts of 3-6 inches are expected, it will fall over a period of several days lowering the flooding threat. That combined with the existing drought conditions should make this a mostly beneficial rain for the area.

"New Orleans has four intake structures, two on each riverbank. [...]

One in Algiers has been out of service for at least 34 years, and the sole remaining west bank inlet has routinely had barges — some containing oil and chemicals — lashed to it over the past decades. Meanwhile, both east bank intake protection structures have remained unrepaired since tanker ships struck them in 2016 and again in 2021, when the 2016 damage had yet to be fixed."
