Today I finished reading Loop by Koji Suzuki: part 3 in the Ring novel series.

So far, it's my favourite book in the series. Without spoiling anything, this book expands massively on the Ring's setting in ways I could never imagined.

Now I'm up S, the fifth book. I have to skip Birthday, the fourth book, since it isn't on Kindle. It's just a collection of short stories anyway, so I don't think I'm missing much.

Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. You are the most iconoclastic/‘tomboyish’ of four young sisters, and it looks like you may chart a path as a writer, but as your sisters fall into the roles allocated them by the 19th century patriarchy, you too may be deprived of the dull spinsterhood you aspired to.

The cover of my second novel. A digital painting, by me, of a woman standing with her back to us, at the edge of a bay, silhouetted in front of a bright, pink and turquoise city scape at night. The sky looks overcast, with painterly textures in purple and blue, and forms the background for the book's title, in large, straight letters: "Subject Beta".

I can't say much without massive spoilers, but if you're a fan of Ringu (1998) or the Ring (2002) film franchises, definitely check out the original novels by Koji Suzuki.

The movie adaptations of Ring (the first novel) are actually just a small piece of the overall narrative.

The scope of the novels is so much larger that they'll blow your mind.

Nothing is what you think it is.

Last weekend, I found myself wanting to revisit the Ring novels by Koji Suzuki after watching both Ringu (1998) and the Ring (2002).

Now I've just finished Spiral. I forgot most of it, having last read it over a decade ago, but it's just as good as I remember.

I skipped Ring, since it's very similar to both the Japanese and American film adaptations.

Now I'm ready to read the third book, Loop, for the first time. Can't wait.

1/9 Happily, academia, and #openaccess publishing within it, still provides a space for something different to the world of agents, editors and #conglomeration that is depicted in these two recent articles on how corporatisation has impacted the world of #LiteraryFiction: ‘not merely the way #novels were published but also the content of those novels’; as well as how we understand the ‘global literary canon’ of everyone from Albert Camus, William Burroughs and WG Sebald to Orhan Pamuk, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Sally Rooney.

https://newrepublic.com/article/176458/big-publishing-killed-author-sinykin-fiction-review

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/nov/09/andrew-wylie-agency-days-of-the-jackal-serious-literature-big-business

This is largely because, while some academic authors do have agents, there’s not much prospect of individual scholars being a ‘moneymaker’ in the way Stephen King and John Grisham, or even Cormac McCarthy and A.S. Byatt, are, let along the literary estates turned ’commercial assets’ of Jorge Luis Borges, Georges Simenon and Vladimir Nabokov.

The Great Fire of London, 1666, received a mention in Sunshine, book two in my Golden Age of Hollywood series, today. Thomas Farriner, a baker, started the fire. However, a psychologically troubled Frenchman, Robert Hubert, was tried and executed for starting the blaze. Robert wasn’t even there - his ship hadn’t docked when the fire started. Why strive for justice when a scapegoat is at hand, eh?

I read both the original Ring novel, and Spiral (its sequel) by Koji Suzuki many years ago and enjoyed them. Spiral starts to get weird though, and I'm told the sequels get even weirder still. Maybe that's why I never got around to reading them all.

Spiral was adapted to film in Japan and released in 1998, same year as Ringu, but fared so poorly that it got retconned out. I'll have to see it sometime.

For now, I wouldn't mind reading the novels again. 🤔

A picture of a medium-brown wooden kitchen table with a paperback book on it. The book is "the long way to a small angry planet" by Becky Chambers. The cover is a picture of space, blue and yellow and purple, with the light composed in a way to bring attention to the small shadow person at the bottom, standing on a nondescript shadow landscape. It is positioned in the lower left corner, and above it to the right is a Christmas themed mug with foamy coffee in it. The mug is red on the bottom and white on top, with raised red and green Holly detailing around the top on the white part. On the top left is a sprawling, green, Pothos house plant adorning the center of the table. The plant pot is resting on a golden tray atop an autumn colored place mat.

RICHARD OSMAN’S LATEST Thursday Murder Club adventure is his best one yet. Impeccably plotted, full of wit and fun, it’s also a marvelously observant portrayal of the power of love and friendship. A MINUS

My wife and I recently read Firekeeper's Daughter & Warrior Girl Unearthed by Indigenous author Angelline Boulley and loved the learning & listening process through the novels.

We were wondering : anyone have any recommendations for other Indigenous-authored novels?

I'm at a point that although I wish for more comments or more kudos on my works on #AO3, I've also given up as I can't figure out how work gets seen on that site.

Anyway, if you like a good fantasy story, where small details can have large ripple effects later, and enjoy the Avatar-verse, then take a look at my Legend of Korra fanfiction:

https://archiveofourown.org/series/3370741

As long as you've seen the first season of Legend of Korra, then it should all make sense. Heck, you probably don't even need to see that, but book 1 would have more clarity if you did. Book 2 is a rewrite of the canon version, and Book 3 will have similar beats to the canon but has my ripple effects of Book 2.

I did so much research for this fanfiction. Dug into the Avatar-verse a LOT, especially the Spirit World, spirit energy, the Beyond/Space, and how that all interconnects with the physical world. And let me tell you, there's so much gaps in the worldbuilding, which gives me a lot of freedom.

I then looked at some common themes that the fandom seems to use in relation to the Spirit World and Spirits, so I collated those as well to try to find a sort-of consensus. (Not that there is one really.) That is reflected in how I depict Spirits and the Spirit World.

Anyway, I play with a lot of fun themes. (Even time travel!) I strive to accurate depict how people in oppressive regimes often have underground mutual aid networks, and how these often have anarchist roots (I paint these as good because they are!).

Korra and Asami's journey is very much a long arc of learning about how to listen to the people's needs and then give them the materials/tools needed to build what they need to be sustainable. Of course, the powers-at-be don't like that and fight Korra and Asami at every turn.

Note: since I'm disabled, I wanted more queer disabled rep, so when our heroes face off in epic battles, they will have scars and deal with temporary (or permanent) disability. How they acclimate is crucial to their journey and the goal of justice, where no one is left behind.

(Content Warning for: graphic violence, abuse, murder, poisoning, attempted genocide.)

Enjoy!

Mr. Takei, have you read Jay Rubin's novel, The Sun Gods?
Harvard (emeritus) translator of Murakami Haruki's novels & short stories. It's written from the perspective of a white young man, but it deals with the internment in a very moving way.
I heard him read from it 12 years ago, or so, at Seattle's University Bookstore, the city where most of the novel is set & where I grew up. Many Issei & Nisei were interned from there.

Hi fellow book nerds! I'm trying to put together a Utopian Book Club (focused on novels and novellas). I want to include LeGuin's The Dispossessed and @pluralistic 's Walkaway, but from there I've got an endless list of mostly white dudes.

What cool utopian fiction by BIPOC writers have I missed out on?

On our recent trip to Japan, I ran out of novels to read, so I went to a bookstore in Naha, the capital of Okinawa, which had an English language section.
I recommend this debut novel by Deborah Install, A Robot In The Garden.
It's sweet (some may say naive, but that's more the robot than the author), & a dark underbelly emerges later on.
Themes: divorce, meaning of family, AI/human interaction, parenting, world travel, mystery.
It's so good, y'all!

The best #StarWars #novels I've read are by #JamesLuceno, particularly #DarthPlagueis, which should be at the top of any fan's reading list, detailing decades of galactic history leading up to #TPM, from about 65 BBY.

Note that Plagueis is not canon. Some of Luceno's later novels are, including #Tarkin and #Catalyst. Catalyst in particular is notable for being hundreds of pages of #Krennic manipulating pacifist #GalenErso into his work on the #DeathStar.

Finished reading the 2019 novel Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston and its alternate reality of post-2016 America and post-WWII UK is definitely very optimistic. Still, it's a pretty good read if you're into queer literature. 🏳️‍🌈📖

Now I'm looking forward to seeing its film adaptation on Amazon Prime this August.

"Eat, Pray, Love" author Elizabeth Gilbert has announced that she will halt the release of her next book, "The Snow Forest," after criticism about its Russia setting. Much of the backlash came via Goodreads, where users posted more than 500 one-star reviews of the as-yet-unpublished novel, which Gilbert says is "set in the middle of Siberia in the middle of the last century." Here's the full story.

Excited today to announce the picks of this year's "Long Summer" reading challenge, 26 weeks total (May Day to Halloween), hopefully with 52 books read, with a heavy emphasis on "summer reading" like beach and airport novels, genre thrillers, etc. Listed in order from thinnest to thickest book, while books grouped together will be read in order without stopping. See the replies for more thoughts on this list!

Outside academia, I don't think people agree on #Genre #Definitions. #Writers themselves don't want their work limited to one label - crime, mystery, horror, thriller... A cagey writer might say, "I write #Novels with crime, mystery, horror, and thrills."

My son finally earned his key.

We have a family rule that you can't see the movie till you've read the book "The Shining" and earned your key. My daughter @TeenHorror came up with this rule since "that's how I had to do it".

His sister and I held a brief, scary ceremony and presented it to him in recognition of this achievement.

Some years ago I wrote the first two #novels in a #fantasyRomance series. It was set in an #alternateTimeline of Scotland, where #magic is real, #dragons are fighting for survival, #vampires rule the nightclubs, the #fey are wild and dangerous and #monarchs are chosen for their magical power.
Here's one of the earliest chapters, where a young lawyer is invited to a dinner at Holyrood Palace.
