Two film critics of the newspaper, Manohla Dargis and Alissa Wilkinson, compiled lists of their favourite movies of this year, and Wilkinson, who’s been writing about movies since 2005, picked “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” as her seventh most liked film of 2023.
“A number of good and much buzzier films from this year – ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ – chronicled women’s journeys toward becoming their own heroes in a world still tilted toward patriarchy. But the Estonian documentary ‘Smoke Sauna Sisterhood’ is the one that’s stuck with me most,” Wilkinson said.
“Women gather in a smoke sauna (we see their tightly framed nude bodies, shot from the neck down, for most of the film) repeatedly throughout a calendar year. They discuss the painful and joyful realities of their lives: fears and hopes, romances and abuses, weaknesses and strengths. Yesterday was the last day of spring. The weather was great, morning temperature about 23 degrees, and went up to 30 in the afternoon.

To celebrate the end of spring, I went to the communal swimming pool for a quick morning swim. Being communal, nude swimming was not allowed - But since no one was there, I cheekily took of my briefs and swam for a bit. It felt so nice to really immerse in water :ablobcatheart:

Wife made delicious seafood for lunch :blobcatfishnom: I had a great nude lunch with her, then worked on my tan in the backyard. I'm getting beach-ready for an upcoming break in 2 weeks 🏖

Yeagarup dunes, where the desert meets the forest. This landlocked dune system moves inland at 4 metres per year, swallowing up the forest in its path. It’s a spectacular place to visit and explore. If you get away from the main track, you can find plenty of secluded places to be at one with nature.

I am packing my suitcase the night before flying to Oslo for a spa break at The Well when my phone rings. It’s my plus one, Shireen, who doesn’t bother with any preamble: “Mads, are you packing swimming costumes?” I reply in the affirmative, to which she says, “Don’t bother. Look at the website — they are all naked! It is all naked! You are taking me to a naked place!”
I immediately cease folding clothes and look at the website. Shireen isn’t lying; a plethora of photos attest to the mandatory nudity at The Well, with everyone in them looking free and very happy indeed to be completely relieved of clothes. I phone her back for crisis talk. “It’s fine,” she tells me, “we won’t go naked — we’ll just arrange a towel over ourselves and scuttle around with the particulars shielded from view.”
Fixed on our plan of remaining at least semi-clothed, the next day we arrive at The Well after a fifty-minute drive from Oslo airport and are immediately impressed by the setup. Nestled in Nordic forests, it is home to the biggest spa in Northern Europe, and they didn’t just max out on square metre footage but also on the variety of offerings: 11 pools and hot tubs, 25 treatment rooms, 15 saunas and steam rooms, and many other areas in which to recline (nude), have a snack (nude), or go on a forest walk (also nude — I’d strongly advise you to beware of pine needles if you sit on a bench during your stroll)...

Since arriving the previous evening I have never given people quite as much eye contact as I have here in the past 18 hours.

After a bit of posturing, Alex took a handful of snowballs from a platter, and deposited them on the igneous stones piled up across the room’s four stoves. As the ice turned to vapor, he ladled scoops of balsamic essential oils — sage and cypress — into the steam. Celtic music, as promised at the very start of the session, began to crescendo.
I sat back, not knowing what to think — and what a rarity that was, what a relief. Surrounded by flutes and fiddles, drowning in aromatics, sweating with purpose, and watching this talented man prance around like some sort of Saturnalia steward, I felt equal parts overwhelmed and relaxed. Getting naked is the hard part. Everything after that is rather easy.
Leading up to my first Charlotte Nude Yoga class on Oct. 13, I was so preoccupied with the idea of being naked around strangers that I hadn’t actually considered the challenge that physically taking off my clothes would hold.
The first decision involved where I would strip down.
“I usually find myself at the front [of the class],” Huck Broyles told me. It made sense that Broyles would be front and center, as he is the founder of Charlotte Nude Yoga. I, on the other hand, chose a corner where I felt comfortable.
I noticed the barn was warm but not oppressively so; the large fan to my right provided calming white noise along with cool air. Red and yellow curtains covered the windows of Big Love Yoga Barn’s garage door to my left and a dark partition stood in front of the door next to it.
The dimmed lights accentuated the swirl of neon covering all four walls, the “You are love, share love” sign on the front wall offset by the intricate circle focal point.
Broyles said he tries to get to classes early to set up and strip nude for incoming participants. He’s found that doing such eases the awkwardness and encourages newcomers to reach the comfort level to undress...

Nudism.tv, a website claiming to exist to provide content that normalizes nudism/nonsexual nudity, who approached me a while ago with an offer to pay me to make content for them (which I ultimately declined because I feel very weird about getting paid to film myself naked, not to mention lose rights over that video) just posted a video advertising some kind of festival aaand...

Halfway through the video, one of the participants is clearly flashing the nazi "OK" sign??

I don't know if the nudism.tv team is fully on board with nazis, or if they're just ignorant about what the symbol means, but wow. And the person flashing the sign being an attractive thin white (artificial) blonde woman really just takes the cake.

And people wonder why I continue to separate myself ever more from #nudism as a group, rather than simply advocating for "nonsexual nudity"...

This is a way that I like to think about #nudism and #exhibitionism: that they are like two different layers that you can peel back from the same onion, which is an onion made up of transparency, confidence, self-acceptance and just sheer unbridled freedom to be yourself without shame.

And these aren’t even the only two layers of that onion: there are lots of layers and peeling back one after another just feels more and more awesome.

We tend to carry about a lot of shame and insecurity about all kinds of things, oftentimes imposed on us by our society. Nudism itself flies in the face of the social norm that says our bodies are inherently ‘naughty’ and must be covered up, and it feels just so great to take off all your clothes and just hang out with other naked people. In shedding your clothes you also shed so much shame, anxiety, insecurity and so on - and it’s like a great equalizer in a way. At a nudist event you can’t tell who’s a doctor or who’s a lawyer, we all look the same naked, and the acceptance that we all have of one another in that context is intoxicating. It can become like an addiction: once you’ve tasted it, it’s hard to imagine going back and being a “never-nude” who always makes sure to cover up because nobody should ever get to see your body.

Many #nudists seem content to just leave it there, and not pick at any other layers of the onion. Nudism is great, but it’s just one thing in life - it feels equally as great when you peel other layers back from the onion as well.

For me, exhibitionism or being sexual online is another such layer. It feels great and emboldening to be free & open about my sexuality, sharing intimate content as well as writing about my fetishes, fantasies and porn interests. Just knowing that I can be freely uninhibited and other people actually like that and support me for it is amazing.

A third layer could be the emotional/mental aspect: on my blog I also write about a lot of deeply personal things (life stories, anxieties, insecurities) that most people don’t talk about even though we all probably go through similar things, because it’s “taboo” to open up. Well let me tell you it also feels pretty damn good to get those things down in writing and published online as well. It’s like because I put it out there myself, it takes a load of weight off my shoulders and makes my anxieties easier to cope with; like nobody could wield them as a weapon against me because I already put them out there myself.

Other layers of this same onion include coming out of the closet as being gay/bi/trans/whatever - all things that can generate a ton of self-imposed shame and secrecy because it flies in the face of societal norms. We tend to put ourselves through so much torment because we feel wrong or ‘different’ somehow and then when you come out, be your own authentic self, embrace your quirks and get a taste of living free of shame: it’s like a Pandora’s box that you don’t even want to close again once you’ve opened it.

📌 A new #introduction for a new Fediverse instance.

I am Noah, a 35-year-old software engineer from the Pacific Northwest United States. I’m also a #nudist and (online) #exhibitionist, so on my page you’ll find a mixture of nudes, lewds, and geeky stuff that I’m into. I also have a lot of other random interests that are miles wide and inches deep.

My style of #nudism is “sex positive” - I had originally set out since my teens to get a nude picture of me doing basically everything a gay boy could get up to on his own, ranging from photos of mundane everyday activities done while naked, all the way up to the occasional amateur porn content. My ideal ratio of nude content is typically 90% “normal nudes” with some hotter stuff now and again thrown in. Sex is only a small part of one’s life so it’s also a small part of my own. My “home base” for my nude presence online is my photoblog, https://introvertnudist.com - all of my nude content goes there first, and then some of it makes its way to Twitter or Mastodon.

On the nerdy side of things, I’m a self-taught #SoftwareEngineer and I have a TON of personal side projects that I work on. I program my own websites and blogs from scratch. Some of my biggest projects include a nudist social networking site I built and launched in August 2022, https://nonshy.com, I am working on my own videogame in recent years, https://SketchyMaze.com, and one of my oldest projects dating way back to 2003 (when I was still in high school!) is https://RiveScript.com, a scripting language I created for programming chatbots with. This was years before Siri, and was inspired by AOL Instant Messenger bots such as #SmarterChild from the early 2000’s. I had ported RiveScript to several different programming languages (as a way to learn the ropes with a new language), from its original #Perl version into #Python, #Java, #JavaScript and #Go.

Other things I’m interested in include all things #science (astrophysics especially), #spirituality and #metaphysics, the #occult and #magick, the #outdoors and #camping, #videogames (especially Nintendo’s main properties - Zelda’s and Pokémon’s and such), and probably a whole bunch of other things that I’m lazy to enumerate right now. 😅
