Maths nerd alert. A number is called fortuitous if it is equal to the product of the lengths of the words in its spelled-out name. E.g., ‘twenty-four’ is 6 x 4 = 24, or ‘eighty four thousand six hundred seventy two’ is 6 x 4 x 8 x 3 x 7 x 7 x 3 = 84,672. I love this.

So, there is this. #Dyscalculia. Are fellow #autistics / #ActuallyAutistics. I think this also falls under #Neurodivergent?

(Long)

I don't think I fall under this entirely, at least based on how it was described in this Wikipedia article.

However, I do have the following issues:
1. I'm very poor with mental computations, ever since.

2. It takes time for me to memorise a sequence of numbers, like a 6-digit phone number (I will more likely mix it up, or forget after a few hours or a few weeks).

Pi? I can only tell you, 3.1416, and when I checked online (just now), 3.1416 is rounded. LOL

3. I'm bad with measurements, distance, volumes. Ask me how long a meter, an inch, and so on, I have no idea. I can't visualise it unless I use a reference that I already measured before. Volume? Same thing. I need a reference, and of course, it only works if the container shape are similar.

For example, I know how far 5 km is if I use a reference that I know is 5 km apart. And that also depends on if it's in a direct line, or road-based measurement.

4. When I see a die, what I see is the shape of the dots, then I know which number landed. So, say, if most people can quickly identify 9 birds sitting on pole lines, I have to literally count it.

This is why I amaze, sometimes in doubt, whenever people give estimates on crowd attendance just by looking. It doesn't make any sense to me how they did it. And whenever I check the real count, their estimates are very close!

5. And because I'm bad with mental calculations and I mix numbers, I have to repeatedly do calculations to check if I got it right (and sometimes still get it wrong).

YET, I was good at mathematics during my school years.

* Grade 6. I was a sub-teacher for our class whenever our mathematics teacher is called for other school duties (since she had multiple roles other than a math teacher).

I actually talked to our teacher privately and declined, because I already know my limitations. But, our teacher saw something in me and knew I can do it. So, I did. AND, I learned to love math.

* 4th year High School. I enjoyed a friendly competition with my classmate in speed computations.

YET, I have low major exam scores. LOL. What's even funnier, our mathematics teacher told me to teach another classmate. Guess what? He scored higher than me in that same exam. (He took it late.)

My math teacher can't help but laugh. Haha. And me, dumbfounded. She also saw something in me, and knew I can teach math. Of course, I also learned why I'm always getting low scores in major math exams, but not in daily tests. It was the whole point, she asked me to teach math to my classmate for that same major exam.

* College course: B.S. Mathematics

Going back to the article, I'm good at:

a. Logic
b. Spatial reasoning
c. Time

This is interesting. LOL. I have no idea about Dyscalculia until today.

Sometimes I jokingly call myself the “numbers girl” because I often see the same numbers sequentially in different places and I find it awe-inspiring. ✨

Today I had this funny thought: “I love it that 6 plus 9 always equals 15.
There’s no grey area about it!
6 plus 9 has always equaled 15 and it always will.”

There’s something comforting about that. There’s a lot of stability in addition.
