I'm planning to set up an underway system in a small (9m) boat operating in the NW coast of the Mediterranean. Due to lack of resources SeaBird thermosalinograph is out of question so I'm aiming for low cost sensors. I've seen some like Atlas Scientific temperature probe, but colleages have disrecommended their conductivity probe for salinity measurements (because of sampling accuracy, frequency, and response time).
Any thoughts or recommendation?

We had a similar issue with sea lion pups starving in Southern California. It's easy to blame commercial or recreational fisheries, particularly where there are few data. When there are independent datasets, the picture is usually found to be more complicated. In our case, changes in food quality eaten by the mothers appeared to be an important reason why the pups ended up starving.

New job, new #introduction post!

I work at Heriot-Watt's #Orkney campus in the far north of #Scotland. Programme lead for MSc in #Renewable and Sustainable #Energy Transition. Research at the intersection of #renewable #energy & physical #oceanography. Member of https://www.icnz.org/

Not my first career.

I care about the #reproducibility of computational science. I'm a fellow of the Software Sustainability Inst (software.ac.uk) and instructor for Software Carpentry (thecarpentries.org).

7%  25% Of The Ocean Floor Mapped From 2017 (Seabed 2030)
--
https://seabed2030.org/ <-- @Seabed2030 web site
--
H/T Dennis Haines
“🗺 Did you know that in 2017, only 6% of the world’s seafloor had been mapped to modern standards? Considering the ocean spans some 70% of the Earth’s surface, that’s a significant gap!
But over the past five years since Seabed 2030 launched, we’ve been able to map almost 25% of the ocean floor.
By discovering more about the seabed, we gain a greater understanding of our environment and can ensure its protection. After all, we can’t protect what we don’t know…”

Sea surface temperature departures from 1991-2020 average around Alaska for the week ending July 21 shows much of the Gulf of Alaska waters now near to slightly above normal. "Hot" water pouring out of the MacKenzie River into the eastern Beaufort Sea is evident in ocean temperatures more than 5C above average and that warm water has spread westward to offshore #Alaska. Eastern Bering Sea #sst remain cooler than normal. Data courtesy NOAA/PSL/ESRL. #akwx #Arctic #Oceanography

Sea surface temperatures around Alaska and vicinity remain mixed. In a change from earlier in the summer, above normal #sst now showing up in parts of the Chukchi Sea. Bering Sea near the Alaska coast mostly below normal except Norton Sound. The "hot" water in MacKenzie Bay likely influenced by warm river water reflecting to some extent the extreme heat of last weekend. Gulf of #Alaska mostly near to below normal. #Arctic #Oceanography

Hoping to see some new #science folks exploring Mastodon so figured it’s time for another #introduction - I’m Mya, a professor at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science. Our lab studies #microbes (bacteria, viruses, protists) in the oceans and other environments and also works on #fish egg identification. I also post about my cute dog and cat a lot! #USFCMS #ocean #marine #oceanography #microbiology #virology #research #seagrass #urchin #academia

The Celtic Sea borders Ireland, Wales, England, and France. It has a surface area of 300,000 km2, and in the northeast region of the sea, it has a depth of about 91-100 m. The Celtic Sea is also home to bottlenose dolphins, harbor porpoises, and minke whales. #Oceanography

Is anyone paying attention (other than Greta)? Speaking about #SeaLevelRise oceanographers and serious climate scientists tell us in no uncertain terms that
“…under any temperature rise scenario, countries from Bangladesh to China, India and the Netherlands, all with large coastal populations, will be at risk. Megacities on every continent will face serious impacts, including Lagos, Bangkok, Mumbai, Shanghai, London, Buenos Aires and New York.” #GlobalWarming #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateEmergency #sealevels #oceanography https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jun/26/its-absolutely-guaranteed-the-best-and-worst-case-scenarios-for-sea-level-rise

Sea surface temperatures around #Alaska for the week ending June 23rd are mostly below 1991-2020 average except for the southern Bering Sea. The small area of well above normal #sst in the northeast Bering is the result of Yukon River discharge. The Bering Strait and Chukchi Sea is especially cool with slow/late #SeaIce melt. I'm starting an expedition thread on our MUDBENCS project, an oceanographic expedition to collect marine and fluvial mud, suspended sediment, and water from the Amazon River and coastal areas of Brazil, French Guiana, Suriname, and Guyana. I will add to this thread from time to time, so please #boost it freely if you think others would be interested in participating virtually in an oceanographic expedition.

Tonight, the ship R/V F. G. Walton Smith pushed off the dock in Miami heading to St. Thomas, to Trinidad, and the to Cayenne. The scientific party was not on board. Most will join it in about 13 days in Cayenne. I will lead a small party of us to transport frozen Amazon samples over land from Macapá, Brazil, through the savannas and rain forest of the Amazon basin to Cayenne, French Guiana. We will board the ship to begin our work on June 3.

The 96 feet, 28 m, shallow draft catamaran pushes off the dock at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the university of Miami. It is shown from the bow with two bright lights shining ahead of it and the bridge from Virginia Key to Key Biscayne directly behind it. Bluish LED deck lights illuminate the decks of the ship, and the waters of Bear cut look green and clear under the ship's lights.

Bundt cake anyone?

When researchers were surveying the seafloor in February,
which enabled the discovery of 19,325 previously undetected mountains,
each 3,300 ft or taller,
they discovered something highly unusual almost as tall as a seamount but looked nothing like a typical undersea volcano.

For #seafloor researchers.

19,325 new seamounts have been added to the Kim–Wessel global mapping project.
The addition of these new mounts and refinement of previous picks updated
the catalog to a total of 43,454 seamounts.
