Here's a trolly problem for you:
There is a lever in front of you. If you pull it, you will blow up an #oil refinery on the edge of a major metropolis. 47 workers die, over 700 people are injured (mostly in the surrounding residential neighborhood), and 23 thousand homes lose power for a day, including one hospital.
If you don't pull the lever, over the next thirty years, the ocean erases $1.3 billion of coastal property, 51k people starve due to #famine, 130k people become #climate refugees, and 7k species go #extinct. All these things will be saved if this particular oil refinery stops production.
Pulling the lever is the only way to shut down the oil refinery.

You may wonder why (despite #sanctions) & war-related difficulties #Russia's economy has not yet collapsed?
In a previous post I noted the shadow trade in #oil shipments... now the FT has revealed a significant route through Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan & Armenia, of dual use & other exports from the EU.
Somewhere between exporting from the EU & importing into these countries around $1bn of sensitive exports has disappeared, leading to suspicions that they are part of Russian sanctions avoidance.

There should just be a rule that all profits from any fossil fuel extraction must either be invested in renewables or must go towards paying for adaptation for the poorest. Profits from renewables can be kept, so the shareholders get returns IF they vote for the company to do the right thing. #climate #BPProfits #Oil
