FYI when I say drug-sober, weed is not part of that equation. I haven't smoked weed for close to 8 years but I would have no problem doing that. And likewise I personally have no problem drinking though many do.
I always say I only drink in Ohio or a couple beers at restaurants here and there. I can turn it on and off like a switch.

Fortunately for me, alcohol was never my devil. I say that because I consider alcoholism worse than drug addiction.
Anyways, I think Sun Microsystems was the end for me. I fell down but got up in 2006. I have been drug sober since 2006.

Stress relief never got in the way of my work. In fact all the companies I worked for had a significant drinking culture.
When I worked for Sun Microsystems companies as a Systems Engineer I had about 10 large customers to take care of, mostly though 4 financial exchanges in downtown Chicago.
It was a large part of my job to take my corporate American Express card and get IT departments drunk.

There was definite dark side to technology for me at least. One HR person told me Zantac was the #1 prescription for employees. To handle the stress of long hours and multi-million dollar quotas I drank like a fish, smoke and snorted.
I couldn't say if it was genetics or generational damage, but I was a highly functioning addict for sure.

Eventually in the late 90's I had this epiphany that even though I was 6-figure compensated, it was unbalanced and life/relationship destructive to work 6-7 days a week, 10-16 hours a day making someone else a billionaire.
So I began the process of decolonizing myself, which frankly was a painful process initially but the benefits super far outweighed the costs.

The white paper for the Pile, a dataset used for many #AI projects (including key #opensource AI efforts) is a fascinating read.
It's managed by a mysterious group called the Eye, it includes things like pirated books and subtitles (for pirated movies) and it has a very interesting take on open science, strongly skewed towards research freedom and pragmatism of accessing and using data.
What I want to highlight here is that the dataset also includes a corpus of @europarl_en from over 20 years.
Anyone who follows the EP legislative process knows it's extremely #oldschool, with little sense that there are collective knowledge management tools that could significantly facilitate the process, make it more transparent and engaging, etc.
So it's interesting to see it end up as a foundational bit for large language models.
I will now be imagining the outputs being just a bit tinged with European political talk.

#Running friends, I have been racing for over 30 years. I graduated from the stop watch on a casio to a smart watch in 2011. Despite the tech, I have always just wrote my workouts in sharpie on the back of my hand. #OldSchool

Even though I’m a prolific #exploit #developer, I’ve always been a big proponent of a tactical approach to #pentesting and #redteaming that does not focus on exploiting known software vulnerabilities, but relies on #oldschool techniques such as information gathering and brute force.
While being able to appreciate the occasional usefulness of a well-timed #0day, as a veteran penetration tester I favor an exploit-less approach. #Tactical #exploitation provides a smoother and more reliable way of compromising targets by leveraging process vulnerabilities, while minimizing attack detection and other undesired side effects.
Sooner or later I’ll present my talk on this subject: “Empty Phist Style - Hacking Without Tooling” (h/t @thegrugq for the title) 🤘
