A prime gap is the difference between two successive prime numbers. A twin prime is a prime that has a prime gap of two. The twin prime conjecture states that there are infinitely many twin primes. In May 2013, the popular Yitang Zhang's paper was accepted by the journal Annals of Mathematics where it was announced that for some integer N that is less than 70 million, there are infinitely many pairs of primes that differ by N. A few months later, James Maynard gave a different proof of Yitang Zhang's theorem and showed that there are infinitely many prime gaps with size of at most 600. A collaborative effort in the Polymath Project, led by Terence Tao, reduced to the lower bound 246 just using Zhang and Maynard results. In this note, using arithmetic operations, we prove that the twin prime conjecture is true.

Gronwall's function \(G\) is defined for all natural numbers \(n>1\) by \(G(n)=\frac{\sigma(n)}{n \cdot \log \log n}\) where \(\sigma(n)\) is the sum of the divisors of \(n\) and \(\log\) is the natural logarithm. There are several statements equivalent to the famous Riemann hypothesis. We state that the Riemann hypothesis is true if and only if there exist infinitely many consecutive colossally abundant numbers \(N< N'\) such that \(G(N)< G(N')\). In addition, we prove that the Riemann hypothesis is true when there exist infinitely many hyper abundant numbers \(n\) with any parameter \(u > 1\). We claim that there could be infinitely many hyper abundant numbers with any parameter \(u > 1\) and thus, the Riemann hypothesis would be true.

My experience of [mainly other] #SocialMedia outlets has been that people tend to post about how great their lives are, even when their lives are crap, or they’re feeling crap, and it’s all just a huge mask they’re wearing. Which is of course their prerogative, and I have been guilty of doing the same.
I sometimes still do, I think, although to a much lesser extent than previously. There’s a fine line between being open and honest and oversharing. I’m aiming for #open and #honest.

Credo di essermi iscritto all'istanza principale nel 2018 quando, da entusiasta #FLOSS e critico/perplesso nei confronti di Twitter in tempi meno sospetti di oggi, cercavo un'alternativa. Non ho finora trovato il tempo (o una ragione sufficiente) per spostarmi su altra istanza, cosa per cui mi autocritico. Non ho il tempo che vorrei per procedere nella mia purificazione informatica.
Da entusiasta per ciò che è #open e/o #libre e/o #federato, sono per le piccole istanze (analogamente a quando preferisco il negozietto a conduzione individuale alla grande distribuzione o alle vendite online).
Da utente o come osservatore "esterno" credo che, perché un prodotto raggiunga significativa diffusione anche tra l'utenza inesperta e non interessata ai retroscena politici e tecnologici, serva una proposta a basso carico cognitivo e pressoché nullo come sforzo iniziale. Un pinco pallino poco tecnologico e ignorante di quante e quali istanza esistano, al momento della registrazione troverà più semplice registrarsi ad una istanza suggerita; abbassa un po' la pendenza di una curva di apprendimento ancora da iniziare.
Mi viene da fare un'analogia con un #Ubuntu di quindici anni fa: sicuramente non duro e puro, ma più semplice ed intuitivo di altre distro (che uso tuttora anche se più volte le scelte di #Canonical mi han portato ad un passo dal cambio di OS)... tanto che riuscii a farlo utilizzare per un certo tempo a persone che di computer non ne sapevano nulla.
Credo serva una buona dose di pragmatismo per anelare ad un break even point rispetto ai grandi attori. E non prescindere dalla realtà in cui ci si vorrebbe inserire.
Uso mastodon.social e Ubuntu, ma periodicamente sostengo l'istanza #friendica che mi ospita e #debian. Certo da solo, non faccio statistica.

Isn't one of the main advantages of the #fediverse and #activitypub (#mastodon ...) it's #foss! You are not only allowed to have your own instance, you are encouraged(!) to have one. The protocol is forever free to use and the #software is free and #opensource too and so are some apps as well. It's all very uncommercial. (Wonderful for someone from Europe btw. ☺️)

@mattwilcox while you are in a browser go to mozilla.org and download Firefox and then install it. After that only use chrome for websites that don’t work well in Firefox. And any time you have to use it complain to the one that makes that website. #open as in #freedom is just better.

I have very mixed feelings about #ChatGPT and related large language models (LLMs). They are certainly a cool tool, but I also currently don't believe that these "stochastic parrots" will easily replace search, article/paper writing, coding, and similar tasks. That is, they can be used to augment, but not replace those human activities - at least in the near future.
One more specific example is #Github #Copilot: I am impressed by the code suggested with small "query blocks", either in the form of method signatures or even just comments. While I wouldn't ever just Tab-complete that code into a production codebase (and I hope others also shy away from it), using it as a smarter auto-complete can be a total time-saver. While still learning #Rust, I find it a great tool to provide me with correct syntax while I try to express the semantic concepts in my head. That is, the #VSCode + #Copilot + #rustanalyzer based workflow is a magnitude faster than what I can achieve, at my current level of competence with #Rust, with any other IDE.
However, on the conceptual level, its suggestions range from spot-on (supposedly for parts that have been used in the same form in many Github projects already) to "terrible, awful, don't even think about it". Don't trust the concepts generated by #Copilot, but for getting a concept into correct syntax, it can be a great help.
I find the same to be true of #ChatGPT: it produces correct (human language) syntax, but its concepts on a semantic level are more random than anything else. It doesn't have a reasonable world model, and without such a world model, even internal consistency of statements (let alone factual validity in alignment with what we consider the real world) is darn hard (impossible?) to achieve. It's currently a toy, and should only be used for toy purposes.
On that note, the best use I could personally find for #ChatGPT is to reply to spammers, who operate on a comparable level of factual and consistent concepts (i.e., #BS): https://github.com/rmayr/chatgpt-email
Maybe #ReinforcementLearning will at some point allow LLMs to be factually more accurate, including the ability to cite sources. I don't know, as I'm not an expert in this field. But the current #UnsupervisedLearning approaches with just scraping massive amounts of (syntax, but not semantic) web content seem fundamentally flawed to me.
On a sidenote, if the #OpenAI mission is really to "ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity", shouldn't the trained models be, erm, #open (source)? After all, the training data is publicly generated, so it seems more beneficial to humanity if the derivations are also #open for building upon them.
what is everyone using for an #EmailClient these days? The #gmail interface seems to be languishing a bit and I'm thinking an actual client application might be nice.
Couple options I'm seeing are #postbox, #mailbird, #mailspring, #sparkmail and #thunderbird.
I've used thunderbird on and off over the last 15-20 years.
I prefer #Open Source (!=free) options but if a closed, commercial app soars about all others, I'm not philosophically entrenched.
