I just started to get MDPI-style "invitations" to create special issues in research fields I have nothing to do with for some Elsevier run journals. Elsevier still publishes well respected journals in my field, but I guess any future request from them is going to hit my spam folder and go unread. An interesting idea by Per Pippin Aspaas, of a commitment to fund smaller scholars-led diamond OA publications by providing a certain amount of funds based on expected # of articles to be published. The figure he uses (€1000) will be too low for many publications because he doesn’t adequately wrestle w/ who’s in a position to “live for their [editorial] work, not off their work,” & the declining working conditions of those in these positions.

“Open” doesn’t mean simply “available.” Just like Open Access research articles, truly Open Datasets are accessible, shareable, and reusable without restriction. But, importantly, Open is just a type of license. Data sharing doesn’t work in practice unless datasets also meet accepted standards for findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability—better known as FAIR.

Big day for the US-based #OpenScience , #dataSharing #openAccess crowd: NSF released its new policies today: https://nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/2023-06/NSF23104.pdf (ht @petersuber ). Here's a quick thread on the #researchData component of it.
The tldr:
- New policy starting 2025
- All data underlying pubs must be shared
- DMPs are now DMSPs as for NIH
- Focus on sharing via domain repositories if possible
- They'll look into better compliance monitoring

Yes, I'm an abolitionist, too:
"If the UK university sector has to choose over the next few years between sacking hundreds of academic staff and ditching its voluntary subsidy to the publishing industry, I know what I would pick." https://telescoper.blog/2023/06/02/abolishing-an-industry/

Today, to continue our exploration of the #OpenMovement, we are resurfacing critical essays written by Balázs Bodó, @JeniT, and Leonhard Dobusch.

The articles examine the core principles and approaches of the Open Movement and were published in response to our own "Paradox of Open" https://openfuture.eu/publication/paradox-of-open-responses/ 📚 #OpenAccess #OpenEducation #OpenSource #OpenData #OpenWeb #DigitalRights #SocialJustice

Could the new conclusions of the Council of the EU on #scholcomm spell the beginning of the end of scholarly journals and academic publishers as we know them?

I sure hope so!

This week's compendium of climate-related academic research tallies to a modest 105 articles featuring "only" 644 contributing researchers.

Among #OpenAccess highlights are some grim projections of what will happen when blackouts coincide with extreme heatwaves later in this century. Serendipity: the North American Electricity Reliability Corporation releases its 2023 summer projection. There are dots to be connected here.

All just a click away!

Figure 3 from Stone Jr. et al. 2023 , "How Blackouts during Heat Waves Amplify Mortality and Morbidity Risk."

Captioned:
"Rate of heat mortality during concurrent 5 day heat wave and blackout events in Atlanta, Detroit, and Phoenix by scenario. The Street Trees, Cool Roofs, Mid Century, and Late Century scenarios reflect blackout conditions."

The graph depicts extreme health and morbidity effects in major United States cities arising from conjunctions of power failures and heatwaves in the latter part of the present century.

Utterly fascinating. Document #32, affadavit of Stephen Schwartz, is the most interesting.

Moral of the story: don’t use #ChatGPT to perform your legal (and probably other) research without verifying everything it comes up with through another channel.

More on the #OpenAccess citation advantage (#OACA).
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.acalib.2023.102734

"Articles under the hybrid gold modality are cited on average twice as much as those in the gold modality, regardless of funding…Funded articles generally obtain 50% more citations than unfunded ones within the same publication modality. Open access #repositories significantly increase citations, particularly for articles w/o funding…Articles in OA repositories receive 50% more citations than paywalled ones."

BIG preprint just dropped:
"Wikipedia and open access"

https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.13945

"We find that open-access articles are extensively and increasingly more cited in Wikipedia. What is more, they show a 15% higher likelihood of being cited in Wikipedia when compared to closed-access articles, after controlling for confounding factors. This open-access citation effect is particularly strong for articles with low citation counts, including recently published ones."

🎉 I am exited to learn that my article on command has found its way onto the popular articles list with the Scandinavian Journal of Military Studies. It great to know that it is read while I am working to finish the rest of the #PhD thesis. It’s free #OA / #OpenAccess here: https://sjms.nu/articles/10.31374/sjms.146 #phdlife

The argument for making your work #accessible (in the #a11y sense) is the same as the argument for making it #OpenAccess — to maximize your audience and impact.

Update. I should add that he contacted me a few years ago because he was interested in #OpenAccess to research. Unfortunately it does him very little good because the prison gives him very little time and freedom online. Even when I send him URLs to OA pieces in his areas of interest, the prison staff deletes them before he sees them.

Update. Is anyone making a public list of those #textbooks? That would benefit the whole country.

It seems to me that such a list could satisfy the @wikipedia #NPOV. "Here are the revised, #FL-approved books" and either "no opinion on whether the revisions were a good idea" or "here is the controversy". But even if Wikipedia would reject it, there are many other ways to make a #crowdsourced #openaccess list.

The League of European Research Universities (Leru) suggested that what “Europe may really need is the development of an open, inter-connected, publicly owned infrastructure”, https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/can-eu-make-parallel-publishing-system-work

The are not the first to call for that...
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5526634

Of course, they are spot-on: this is precisely what is needed!

Exciting #preprint news! The Association of Population Centers has launched a new working paper series, hosted by SocArXiv. Papers welcome from any pop center affiliate. APC will vet them and post them directly to SocArXiv, with a cover page, DOI, paper number. Authors can add supporting materials, and upload new versions, and then we'll link them up to subsequent published version. More info, and to submit: https://www.popcenters.org/association-of-population-centers-arxiv-apca/.

Natural variablility has been a traditional climate change refugium for climate change deniers.

Meanwhile, researchers conducting legitimate investigations of natural variability must first remove what has become an obvious signature of climate change.

Here's an example of how researchers can separate nature from "nuture."

Reminder: Only a minority (≈ 31%) of OA journals charge APCs, even if a majority of articles pub'd in OA journals are in the APC-based variety.
