A City Council bill, Intro 814, a.k.a. The HEART (Harihareswara Expand Access to Rapid Treatment) Act, would change that.

Bei uns wird begründet, das im #WaldbrandAtlas Informationen enthalten sind, die nur für Einsatzkräfte sind. Warum man keine Version machen kann, in der kritische Daten, die nur für Einsatzkräfte zugänglich sein sollen, unkenntlich macht oder entfernt, bleibt mir schleierhaft.

Here one general question for all #geospatial experts: if someone uses e.g. segment anything (https://github.com/opengeos/segment-geospatial) on satellite images from Google Earth, Microsoft Bing or similar. Can the polygons extracted using segment anything be considered a new IP? Is it a "fair use" to release the produced vectors as open data under CC-BY or similar (so not the images only vectors)? @jonny ah yes, AWS' scam to make things seem "open" and "free" only to lure scientists into their private infrastructure and lock them in. Since I've pivoted to work more on #Sustainability than #Neuroscience lately, I was recently approached by someone to work on a research project using the datasets available on Amazon's Sustainability Data Initiative -- which I declined -- but I was amazed at how enticing they make this look. No wonder scientists fall into their trap!

If only open infra received that kinda marketing -- #climate scientists could then see how they could have both #OpenData AND the #OpenInfrastructure to host that data.

I've planted a seed into the minds of some of the @climatematch #JupyterHub #2i2c folks to consider not hosting on Amazon/Microsoft/Google Cloud infra and instead go for cleaner and greener alternatives that are not powered by #FossilFuel. According to this Dec 2019 wired article -- Amazon had the worst ratings of the 3 big players:
Overall Greenness: C-
Energy Efficiency: B
** Transparency: F **
Technological Innovation: Unknown

But the big draw for these evil private megacorps seems to be the "free credits" that they offer and scientists/labs/institutes that are not well funded end up choosing these private cloud service providers.

ever since I started being a scientist I have been continually gobsmacked at how we are suckers for literally every scam, and the effect of all those scams defines the daily practice of science from front to back. I don't think I'll ever stop being mystified at how people can decide that being mandated to straight transfer like a 5th of every grant to the worst companies in the world is just not relevant to them.

"it's not my job, I just do the science, and every part of how I do the science is kneecapped by my decision that it isn't my job"

I have heard the arguments about precarity and unevenness of expertise and so on and so forth, but almost all of that is itself a symptom of our failure to take responsibility for the political-economic circumstances of our work

we didn't think it was important to be active in our unions to resist neoliberalizing universities. great now you get paid just enough to choose between eating and rent.

we didn't think it was important to rebuild healthy communication systems. billions of dollars later, we funded the surveillance conglomerates that power ICE, own the process by which our work is evaluated and how we maintain our jobs, and make all of our publicly funded research either unavailable to 99.9999% of the world or else subject to a pay-for-prestige APC model designed to reward playing along with a healthy dose of Matthew effects.

and now the infrastructure to support the Nelson Memo's mandate for #OpenData is not our problem. I can't wait to give Amazon total control over scientific data and a brand new shiny revenue stream that never goes down

There are planned/operating/retired generators in the EIA-860M data, and separate Puerto Rico tabs in the #eia923 spreadsheets since ~2018, but there's zippo in the normal annual EIA-860 -- not even the generators, let alone the plants and utilities and environmental associations.
