I'm trying to add more #etymology to #OpenStreetMap, normally that's done by adding a link to `wikidata`, but there's many missing wikidata/wikipedia items... 😭
I’d like to tap into the #OpenStreetMap hivemind.
I’m looking for the best solution for pedestrian on-the-go mapping. I want to use my external GNSS receiver with a proper survey antenna and feed RTK data to it - I can use USB and Bluetooth. I want to be able to do complex editing, including creating buildings and ways. Any new hardware I’d get should have a 5+ year lifespan. Windows is out of the question.
I have thought about:
1) An Android tablet running Vespucci. I have been using this on a phone, but I have not found an Android tablet with a guaranteed 5+ year software support. Also, feeding RTK over BT is a pain and the battery life on the phone sucks.
2) A robust 2nd hand laptop, like a ThinkPad, in a backpack running Josm, with desktop over VNC on my iPad. I tried this using a Raspberry Pi. Kind of works, but the UX over VNC is terrible.
3)A laptop in some kind of handsfree harness. Does anyone have any experiences of these sorts of contraptions? I’d like a touchscreen too, but I am not sure at all how well Josm on Linux plays with that. Also it should take occasional subzero temperatures in stride.
Anyone?

@flohoff it should be pointed out that they are trying to build an #OpenStreetMap competitor that pays out crypto currency for edits (now where have we heard that before? 😉) So naturally they are interested in your e-mail address.
PS: I note that they haven't even progressed far enough to spell OpenStreetMap correctly yet.

I've been scrutinizing a lot of theme parks on #OpenStreetMap recently. The tagging is extremely underdeveloped which means folks have been quite... creative.. with things that already render in Carto. My current favorites?
1) Log flume rides mapped as ferry routes.
2) Various water rides mapped as waterway=canal
3) Boarding stations for roller coasters using public_transport=platform
When you look around your neighbourhood on #OpenStreetMap and see some really crude mapping, that turns out to be from yourself, far more recently than you'd want to admit

@governorkeagan Sort answer: NO.
Eircode is a proprietary address product protected by various aspects of intellectual property law. I'm sure that the T&Cs of the Finder prohibit this sort of thing (yes, personal, non-commercial), but so do those of #OpenStreetMap. Equally, we don't want an expensive legal battle and bulk adding Eircodes is the sort of thing which would precipitate one.
Anyone in #ireland who uses #openstreetmap, is it possible to use https://finder.eircode.ie to auto populate address with a tool like JOSM?

#openstreetmap While I was generating some numbers on editor usage yesterday (for the @geomob podcast we just recorded and maybe for a diary post too), I noticed a massive (at least in OSM terms) anomaly in the newbie signup rates for RapiD (Facebooks iD fork). #OpenStreetMap question: Does anyone have any pointers where I could learn more about the tagging of rivers in #Japan? (Unfortunately, I don’t speak Japanese). Looks like there was an #OpenData import that tagged too many features as "rivers" that should probably be “streams”, causing Japan to have way too much waterway density.
Here are screenshots of #Tokyo, Seattle, and Zurich all at zoom 10, showing how Japan has way more rivers than you'd expect at this zoom level.
I hadn't really looked at #GoogleMaps for years.
This makes me so much more proud about what we have at #OpenStreetMap :)

Ended up on #GoogleMaps from a website, and it didn't seem to depict reality. Had to compare it with OSM.
Missing major buildings, roads. Incorrect roads (NE one is a mostly a path). And that's ignoring all the detail, available in OSM.
Oh, and that "bar" on the left in Google Maps? That's a spam entry, advertising bar services for events.

I wonder if there should should also be a #30DayOSMChallenge next year in November? Basically try to map something new or improve an existing object based on a daily theme in #OpenStreetMap.
So for example, Day 8 could be “Roads”, and you could map a new road or add a surface=* tag or name:etymology=* tag to an existing road.
It would be something fun to do and could help folks achieve the 42 days needed to qualify for free membership to the OSM Foundation (if they want to join).

Update: gefunden.
I finally finished something I started last winter: surveying and updating the waymarked hiking trails in Benalmádena municipality. Five "pequeño recorrido" trails (PR-A 54 to 58) and one "sendero local" (SL-A 273) had been renamed, renumbered, and in some cases changed course over the last few years, so there was a lot to catch up on.
So if anyone is planning on combining some Costa del Sol sunshine with strenuous walks, make sure to use a source based on OSM!
