My six year old #Alienware 17” laptop, running Windows 10 (not eligible for 11), has been giving me the Blue Screen of Death (#BSOD) for a few weeks. I’ve done progressively deeper reinstallations of #Windows, and finally a completely fresh one from a USB drive where I removed all existing partitions. It worked for a bit and then … BSOD.
Every test of the hardware kept passing, though, and I don’t want to get a new computer. I’m considering trying to run #Linux instead, but my only experience with that OS is my kid’s Raspberry Pi. Thoughts? #computers #OperatingSystems

25 years ago today, Google was founded.
On the same day, I wiped Windows 98 off my computer, believing that Debian Linux (which I had been using for a while but still kept Windows on another partition) could do everything I had been doing with Windows until then.
Since that day, many installations of Linux, *BSD, MacOS have graced my computers, but Windows has remained, on a few occasions, only an occasional (unwelcome) guest.
In the spirit of a typical support group phrase, I can joyfully say:
'Hello, I'm Stefano, and I haven't been using Windows as my primary operating system for 25 years.'

Today is an interesting day in terms of crashes. I just watched somebody crash both ls and rm because their directory had too many files in it. To be clear: the crashes happened on subsets of the files in the directory. 😳
Maybe I've been lucky? I've never seen that before.
And I once had a conversation with a colleague that ended in us crafting an "rm -r *" (in disguise) that deleted all of his stuff.

Exploring the internals of Linux v0.01 | Seiya Nuta https://seiya.me/blog/reading-linux-v0.01
«Linux kernel is often mentioned as a overwhelmingly large open source software. […] However, the first version of Linux, v0.01 was pretty small. It consisted of only 10,239 lines of code. Excluding comments and blank lines, it was only 8,670 lines. It's small enough to understand and is a good starting point to learn about the internals of UNIX-like operating system kernels».
A fun little read about some #Linux version 0.01 internals. As the author notes, at 8 kloc, the kernel is quite approachable.

What would be a good resource on the history of #OperatingSystems to figure out which systems were "firsts" for some things? E.g.:
* What was the first batch processing system on a Turing-complete computer? (Was it GM-NAA in 1956?)
* What was the first system that had data inaccessible from outside monitor mode?
* Was the UNIVAC 1103/ERA 1103A the first computer to use interrupts?
* Which was the first computer to use spooled batching?
(I have a whole bunch more questions like this! Firsts for things that my students might never have thought about (e.g. batching) as well as important OS concepts we still use today (e.g. time sharing).)
I'm also interested in knowing which systems were the first to combine some of these ideas.
Thank you for any direction you can give me! #ComputingHistory

"I want to learn linux/install a new operating system/ learn new technical things"
Try installing Gentoo!
Why? Gentoo is one of the best ways to build things from the ground up to your liking, and the documentation is some of the best out there. Installing Gentoo as your operating system on your testing/warmachine/daily driver computer will teach you the ins and outs of configuring an operating system and how to make it exactly to your liking, especially when you're using the Gentoo Handbook. The community also has a heart of gold.
This installation style means that you have a lean operating system custom configured for your hardware that doesn't force anything you don't want onto you. You are in control.
Happy installing!

To me, the root of all digital accessibility is the operating system. A lot of people ask me why I have 3 computers. No, I’m not rich, two of them were bought for me. The reason is that Windows, MacOS, and ChromeOS all have different accessibility stacks, three different philosophies of how accessibility and screen readers should work, and different things that accessibility stack and screen reader(s) are good at.
For example, the Mac uses object navigation for everything within VoiceOver. Everything is an object, and you navigate mostly with the VoiceOver keys and sometimes you can get away with using Tab. On Windows, you primarily use Windows navigation commands, with Windows screen readers speaking any needed info. The Mac, to me, is great at writing, and email, because because it has good writing apps, and a good mail client built in. Windows is great for web navigation and games, and writing if you like Microsoft Word. The ChromeBook is good for Android apps and Linux kinda and that’s about it for me. Everything else, web, Windows can do a bit better.

I'm #editing the #funny #novels of @jenkirchner. I built #OperatingSystems for a long while, which led to #burnout, but I still have feelings for them.
I'm interested in #programming (esp. #rust, #PlaydateDev, #OperatingSystems, #DevTools), #gaming (esp. #RPG, #incremental, #MMORPG like #EverQuest), #electronics, #TechHistory, #philosophy, #grammar, #craft, #health, #GenerativeArt, #pets. Ok, ok... and some #RealityTV.
Hatred is not strength. We don't have to "live with it." Reject selfishness. Support health, housing, and education. Mask up.
Bringing one of my greatest hits over from Twitter: distributed systems papers explained through cat photos.
In the first installment, my three cats explain my group's paper "Pegasus: Tolerating Skewed Workloads in Distributed Storage with In-Network Coherence Directories" from OSDI'20. 🧵

Hi everyone. Time for a #introduction!
I'm a CS researcher at Microsoft Research; formerly faculty at UW CSE.
I do research in #distributedsystems, #operatingsystems, #datacenters and #networking. I've worked mainly on consensus and transaction protocols, and lately programmable switches.
I started the https://discuss.systems/ instance for the computer systems community.
I post about research, food and wine, bad jokes, and cat photos. Sometimes I even explain systems papers using cat photos.
We wrote a free/libre (CC, free cultural work) book about operating systems fundamentals. It's in Spanish.
Escribimos un libro sobre fundamentos de sistemas operativos, libre (CC, free cultural work) en español.
