I think a better name for my #generativeart WIP than Windswept Grid would be Windswept Infinity. I experimented with adding circles to anchor things a bit when there is more motion. I was able to refine several elements, and it's producing some really cool textures at times. Since I'm still having trouble uploading video, here are some more stills, two each from two different runs. It's fun to find great moments within the infinite possibilities.

The animated aspect is a main focus as it's really fun to watch things slowly shift and evolve, but it's also fun to find great moments out of the endless possibilities. I've been working on a new #GenerativeArt system in #p5js over the last five days, which is coming along nicely. It involves simple shapes which are layered over time, sweeping like wind across the frame, with vivid colors, responsive design, and some interactivity. My tentative name for the project is "Windswept Grid". This image just struck me as one of the most vibrant, intense, yet somehow still pleasing images I've ever made. I'll upload a video demo and more output examples tomorrow.

To that end, last week I made a sketch for Pi day, as well as a recreation of an abstract artwork by Eusebio Sempere, a 20th century Spanish artist whose work I was introduced to by Anna Carreras. It came together fairly quickly, and though I ran into an obstacle, I knew it should be surmountable, and with the help of @davepagurek on the Birb's nest Discord group, I figured it out. With my confidence restored, I got back to work on bigger things.

this stuff is all working now! the "trashotron optical neuron" senses pixels being black or white in the screen and controls 2 stepper motors and a solenoid. if the steppers move pulleys which control the motion of a little box with a spray paint can in it and the solenoid drives the button on the top of the can, you've got an extension of the web browser onto the side of a dumpster. Pixels are flashed using the #p5js #javaScript library and #geometron. Geometron is a purely geometric programming language which is used to program this robot. The whole system to pick up signals and control the robot is analog, no digital. ALL robot control is inside the web browser. This is how we make the whole robot system from trash: stepper motors and controllers come from broken 3d and 2d printers. pulleys are made from cardboard and wood trash. op amps are scavenged from parts bins, circuit boards are made of cereal boxes, solenoids are from automotive parts, power is on battery packs from the trash charged with DC brushed motors from 2d printers from the trash. Spray paint cans are donated from artists who use the system to make art on trash on the side of a dumpster for free distribution. This is the extension of HTML into dumpsters and large flat trash.

A bit of a glow between these aerials in this zoomed-in #wip. Zooming in is easy-peasy now, thanks to #p5js having a lovely mousewheel function. Great stuff.

I made a quick sketch for Pi Day (3-14), and it ended up working well as a parameter space to explore. The x axis controls the number of divisions of the circle, and the y axis changes the noise scaling factor. It works really well on mobile. Esto es interesante. Bing chat comete exactamente el mismo error de interpretación que mi alumnado cuando les pido un código en p5.js que dibuje una matriz de 5 x 5 círculos de diámetro 50 píxeles cada uno relleno de un color aleatorio.

El código sencillo es dejar que el color de cada círculo cambie en cada iteración. Y por eso utiliza la interpretación más sencilla del texto... como mi alumnado. Porque es lo conveniente. (1/3)

another thing about #p5js and how it's useful for trash processing. I can use a motor which as it spins it whacks against a key on a keyboard to control the rate speed of keystrokes on a single key(say the spacebar), and that can be fed back into the rate of flashes on the screen using controls of the frame rate. So we can get analog real time control of robotic systems all in a web browser with trash-sourced electronics entirely thanks to how easy p5.js makes this process.

#p5js is turning out to be THE key to the #trashduino. I'm not using an audio input now, but a USB keyboard connected to a trash laptop. a trash-built optical pickup panel sits on the screen detecting pixel flashes which control the motors from the trash which writes in the trash. Clock signal and slimezistor feedback signal are both now generated using op amps from the trash. If the robot can encode information on a surface which the audio probe can read out, that can encode geometron information, fully closing the loop! The way that p5js combines real time interaction, direct pixel control, and the web, which can then connect it with all the geometron i've written in javascript is what makes this all work. this is self-replicating media built entirely from trash.

“Structured Cynicism #2”

“Structured Cynicism #2” is a generative painting created with a robotic pen plotter. The robot follows instructions produced by a generative algorithm that combines several subroutines to create flowing vortices of ribbon-like forms.
