For #FossilFriday, an amazing Ptychodus martini "shell-crusher" shark tooth I found in a gravel bar on a creek in #AustinTX.
It's a bit of a hike to this part of the creek, and when I sat my backpack down to rest for a bit, this gem was beneath the strap of my pack.
This is the largest of the 20+ Ptychodus teeth I've found on this creek, and the best preserved. It eroded out of the Austin Chalk, and is from about 85mya.

For #FossilFriday, a collection of vertebrae recovered from #Florida's Bone Valley formation.

Always excited for it to be #FossilFriday! An old friend was recently at the Chicago Field Museum and sent some some pictures of Sue the T-Rex. I have yet to have the pleasure to meet her but do plan to one day, along with Big Al, Black Beauty, and the Fighting Dinosaurs.
Makes me curious, what fossils do any of you want to see in person? Basically, what’s your Fossil Bucket list??

A previously unknown giant herbivore discovered (video)
A new subspecies of grass lizard, which has been named Garumbatitan morellensis, was discovered in Spain.
This new dinosaur has been named Garumbatitan morellensis and was 10 meters high and 25 meters long.
The herbivore was a four-legged herbivore with a long neck and tail, not unlike a brachiosaurus.

An article published in the journal "Nature" reports a study on a trilobite fossil of the species Bohemolichas incola dating back to around 465 million years ago, in the Middle Ordovician period, which reveals the contents of its guts in the last meal that occurred before its death. A team of researchers subjected the fossil in to a sophisticated synchrotron microtomography.

One of the things that makes Baru iylwenpeny so special is that we have a lot of it. There are seven skulls, and dozens of postcranial bones This makes it the single most completely known mekosuchine crocodile in Australia, if not the world (there are apparently a lot of Mekosuchus inexpectatus bones - but little of it is published and I don't think there is a whole skull known).
#Mekosuchinae #crocodile #paleontology #Miocene #Alcoota #MegafaunaCentral

So let me tell you guys a little about this magnificent new crocodile. The species name is 'iylwenpeny' but is pronounced "eel - OON - bin - yah" which looks about as far from the spelling as it is possible to get. It is an Anmatjerre name (an Arandic language from central Australia) and means "skilled at hunting".

It is finally published!! Say hello to Baru iylwenpeny

Tomorrow a large paper that has taken many years to produce finally drops. If you are interested in extinct crocodylians keep an eye out - I'll post about it here.

Today Max’s Mobile Museum #M3 is at Estudillo Elementary School in San Jacinto, CA. Among the nearly 100 specimens on display is this “elbow-bone” (technically, the olecranon process of the ulna) from the extinct camel Camelops hesternus. It’s from the #Pleistocene of Temecula, and is covered with bite marks from a carnivoran. The images show the #3dprint in the Mobile Museum, and the original specimen @westernsciencecenter.

For #FossilFriday I want to share this Squalicorax kaupi shark tooth I found in a creek bed in #AustinTX. This belonged to a Cretaceous crow shark, and presumably eroded out of the Ozan Formation before I found it among the creek gravels. It's one of about 100 shark teeth I've found in Austin.

For today #FossilFriday I found a photo from the Smithsonian Natural History museum of a Shell Crushing Mosasaurs skull.
I, like probably many people, think of Mosasaurus Marine Reptiles as hunters of other Reptiles and fish. But there are species that have strange Mushroom shaped teeth that speckles in eating hard shelled critters. Really created a unique skull compared to that of the traditional razor sharp teeth.

One of my wiwaxia for #InverteFest!
This is a handprinted Wiwaxia, a half billion year old soft-bodied animal covered in scales and spines. These animals lived in the early and middle Cambrian period and fossils are found worldwide, including in Canada's Burgess Shale. The animals themselves were only about 5 cm (2") but my linocut prints are much bigger.

The creature that kicked this all off is a massive 13,000 year old bison (bison antiques), and occasionally in the last 15+ years, more of his skeleton has been found
We got super lucky this year, finding a radius ulna and some of his ribs! See in the photos how a bone from 2008 fits perfectly with a 2023 find.

Hypothesis. Our ancestors evolved bipedalism as they developed tool use (manipulating objects using the hands). Hard to prove, but, the hypothesis meets the requirements of an adaptation that would, does, increase reproductive outcomes.

Its dense bones balanced the buoyancy of blubber and lungs filled with air—essentially they acted as ballast to let P. colossus whales remain underwater with less effort.
