In the beautiful scenery of Florence, European University Institute hosted their first #minipublic on September 9th.

The citizens shared their #pandemic experiences and started working on the 4 topics:

1: #Knowledge circulation
2: #Disinformation
3: Role of non-elected #experts
4: #Politicaltrust

Now they're warmed up for Day 2 to get concrete and formulate policy advise for the EU on Saturday!

It's a novel approach! 😂😂

I get where you're coming from. I was an early #COVID sceptic (not #antivax) until a mate who was working on the vaccine put me straight with empirical evidence. I then fell foul of the #Plandemic & antivax brigade! 🙄

A friend who I repeatedly clashed with online over COVID tragically died 18 months into the #Pandemic.

Unfortunately he succumbed to the very COVID he said didn't exist. He was ill for days & refused to seek medical help. C19 got him. 😓

Have you heard of the “‘Covid Collaborative”? No?

What do they want?

They want the pandemic to end by having people “make the courageous decision” to expose themselves to the Covid virus

They’re a big group of committed vocal minimizers like Gounder & Ghandi and 2nd generation minimizers like Slavitt and Frieden

Plus many many Democrat and Republican former governors, chiefs of staff, congressmen, White House staff, NSC-types

Plus hedge fund and investment types

You get the idea—people with access, $$$

An interesting member is their VP for Science & Strategy, Steven Phillips MD, MPH

He used to be the Medical Director for Global Projects at EXXON

He’s spoken repeatedly about the need to have courage and expose yourself, thereby ending the “Covid divide” (see photo below, from August)

How can so many people have signed on to this, and be willing to promote a basically eugenicist approach to this #pandemic?

Their ideas have flooded the world—scientists and doctors at some of the world’s leading universities are preaching against masks, in favor of “hybrid immunity,” even against vaccines

Signs on public transit say, “forget the mask” 😬

The president himself says I’m taking off my mask🦧

Why Healthy #Forests Mean Fewer #Pandemic

COVID-19, SARS, and Ebola—three infectious diseases that spread across national borders since 2002—share one thing in common: They were transmitted to humans from wild animals living in tropical forests, which are losing more than 100 trees per second due to rampant, unsustainable deforestation. It is also important to note that cutting down trees negatively impacts not only biodiversity and human health but the climate:

• Is a #pandemic virus

Our leaders are competing to see who can make their country default as quickly as possible:

Is anyone else who's #CovidCautious noticing the quality of #Lucira #covid19 tests seems to be...lacking? I assume their results still very accurate, but anytime I take one, it almost always gives the "inconclusive" result, so I have to take another one, and I end up having to wait over an hour to figure out if it's safe for me to see high risk friends or not while also more quickly using up my dwindling supply.

I'm also noticing that many boxes seem to have pieces missing, usually the nasal swabs, so I end up using a swab from some rapid antigen tests that are about to expire, and I'm not sure if that impacts the quality of the result or not.

Is this happening because the only Lucira tests left are close to their expiration dates? Is it because they're likely from when Lucira was going bankrupt? Has anyone else noticed this? And does anyone know if Pfizer has any plans to make these tests available again in the future?

Warning from Sarah Kendzior
#ClimateCrisis #Pandemic #DisposablePeople

Quote from Sarah Kendzior: "My initial fear when the pandemic hit was that autocratic leaders
would use the crisis as a pretext to strengthen authoritarian rule, as
dictators have done throughout history. I could relate to the protesters
concerned about losing civil liberties despite my own opposition to the
politicians they claimed to adore. But the opposite occurred: instead of an
exploitable crackdown, we got criminal negligence. Officials saw that it
was cheaper to let the masses die out on their own, especially when the
plague hit hardest the groups whom they saw as undesirable and
expendable: Black, Latino, Native American, disabled, impoverished
Americans, and other marginalized communities. Covid is but a prelude for
how states will handle the era of catastrophic climate change. It is a test
run of what happens when powerful elites deem the public disposable
without even feigning a pretense of concern. It is a dark omen of our lost
leverage."

"The work cited here suggests many more people, and perhaps everyone, who has been infected with SARS‑CoV‑2 may already be experiencing the same heightened T cell activation as those suffering Long COVID with the only difference being symptom expression."

https://johnsnowproject.org/insights/a-new-disease-paradigm/

#covid #longcovid #SARSCoV2 #pandemic #publichealth

From John Snow Project:

In light of the accumulating evidence, we propose a new paradigm for COVID-19:

COVID-19 is a disease that has an acute and chronic phase. Both phases can be asymptomatic or symptomatic, and the severity and nature of symptoms in either phase depends on the host immune response, viral inoculum and location of infection. In the chronic phase, commonly known as Long COVID, many more people than those who exhibit symptoms of Long COVID, or perhaps everyone who has been infected by COVID-19, is on the same spectrum of T cell activation and may share as yet undiscovered characteristics of viral persistence or immune dysfunction, regardless of whether they experience Long COVID symptoms or not, and the experience of those symptoms, which may be associated with further immune perturbation on reinfection, may be related to the location and/or quantity of viral RNA/protein/replicating virus in persistent reservoirs.
From John Snow Project:

An analogy for what we’re seeing may be found in Hepatitis B (HBV) where people with chronic HBV go through four phases of infection; an immune tolerant phase when host immunity is weak and viral load is high, an immune active phase when host immunity is strong and viral load decreases, an immune control phase during which host immunity can control the viral load, and a reactivation phase during which weakened host immunity can cause a loss of control of the viral load. In the case of HBV, T cell activation and exhaustion constrains effective viral clearance. Treatment of HBV can restore T cell phenotypes and might be used as a predictive measure for the effectiveness of the treatment. Lessons from Hepatitis B and HIV suggest we need effective biomarkers for the COVID-19 host immune response and the location and amount of any persistent SARS‑CoV‑2 virus or RNA. It may be that levels of T cell activation with CD38 and HLA-DR expression combined with other specific immune responses can be used to develop an effective host biomarker, and further research is needed to develop methods to identify the amount and location of persistent virus suggested by persistent peripheral T cell activation and evidenced numerous studies of adults and children.

I finally saw the #BarbieMovie, and I'm kind of glad I saw it alone, because I cried a lot.

Art and literature after the flu #pandemic didn't directly address the flu, but it was there in the background, and #Barbie feels like that with #covid19 and with #ClimateChange—who are we and what does life mean now? What does it mean to be human when the parties, popularity, validation and shiny, fun distractions are stripped away? Yes, there's a lot of privilege to having those things to lose, but we still have to #grieve the loss and build not just a new world but new selves. We're in a very #existential moment.

Also, okay, yes, the movie is very #Feminism 101, but given that the point is that we haven't even achieved that, I think #feminist films are worth celebrating.

The FA hurts because they are fucking around going to concerts and restaurants and you're not part of their life in that way anymore.

"That's not the worst part. It's not the collapse. It's not the death of our hopes and dreams. It's the fact that we're not allowed to grieve it and move on. Imagine trying to grieve the loss of a friend or a parent when half of everyone you know won't even admit they're dead. Imagine you're stuck in a real-life version of Weekend at Bernie's. That's what we're doing. It's the norms that force us to engage in acts of cultural necrophilia. It's having to pretend for our bosses, our coworkers, our friends, and our relatives. Doing some background #research on how the #pandemic shutdowns affected businesses (which ones survived, thrived, died) and why.

I scanned this McKinsey report (05.01.2020) and realized how we took an opportunity to improve nearly everything in how we do #business - including normalizing remote work and empowering more decision makers - and as soon as life got back to (relative) normal, the CEOs mostly ditched it all in favor of returning to their comfort zones.

Household Pulse Survey (HPS) is an Internet questionnaire…by…Census Bureau…includes questions regarding “any symptoms lasting 3 months or longer that you did not have prior to having coronavirus or COVID-19.” [Note] that the list of long-term symptoms, provided for this question, may not reflect all sequelae of covid infection, e.g. systemic organ damage or increased susceptibility to subsequent infections and other adverse health outcomes.

NCHS uses HPS responses to estimate incidence of [LC] in adult population. For purposes of this chart, we assume that U.S. under 18 population (22% of total) meet criteria for [LC] at half the rate of adults.

I see a sudden trend for purple lights on the ceiling of the newly-revamped parts of the White House. The press reports these as mood lighting when they really look very much like far UV.

Unless attendees revel in a nightclub toilet ambiance, I can't imagine the need for purple lights for any other reason than eliminating airborne viruses and bacteria.

But perhaps it's just ugly and weird.

@arstechnica ☝️ It may not take any single scary subvariant to actually be a scary proposal.

Every infection — the #antivaxxers 'did their own research', so good on 'em 🤷🏻‍♂️ — attacks/lowers our defences and *reactivates* the prevalent #HSV and #EpsteinBarr viruses which appear to be behind lot of the #longcovid cases... we're approaching 100 million cases of long covid globally by the end of the year.

The best way to lower the risk of (long) covid to yourself and those you care about is by staying current on vaccinations and, yes, using a mask.

And thanks #CCP for *demanding* that in early 2020 flight had to be allowed to leave the #PRC and create this #pandemic it covered up.

Today (9/7) is the last day for comments on expanding #wastewater surveillance of #COVID19 and other infectious diseases. Right now there are only FIVE comments.

Please, please comment - This is the only way we can monitor #disease threats in this podunk mess of a nation. #Covid #pandemic will not be the last and we need tools.

It's part of ableism to act as if "only the weak" become disabled.

"...the updated booster is not intended for everyone. It’s for people in high-risk groups – those who are age 75 or older, pregnant or immunocompromised, said Offit, who serves on the FDA’s expert panel that reviewed the vaccine companies’ data."

"Blood Clues to Long-COVID Brain Fog Discovered"

"Researchers have discovered two blood biomarkers that could predict cognitive deficits, including 'brain fog,' up to a year after a COVID-19 diagnosis. The study analyzed data from over 1,800 hospitalized patients and identified high levels of fibrinogen and d-dimer, proteins linked to blood coagulation, as being highly correlated with cognitive issues."

Secret Pandemic? Even More People Could Have Long COVID Than Doctors Think, Study Finds

by Richard Burkard, August 29, 2023

"As coronavirus shows signs of expanding across the U.S., Knewz.com is learning about new research indicating long COVID may affect more people than first thought.

A Northwestern University study suggests at least 4 million U.S. residents of people have symptoms of COVID-19 even if they were never diagnosed with the virus.

The journal Neurology, Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation notes the study sample is small, with 29 patients. But it shows similar symptoms among people with a “post-viral syndrome” and people diagnosed with “long COVID.”

The researchers defined long COVID as a person with symptoms lasting longer than six weeks. The Centers for Disease Control estimates 19% of U.S. adults who developed the virus fit that title.

The study shows 41% of people with the post-viral syndrome had been exposed to coronavirus. But they don’t have the virus now, so they’re not allowed to enter 70% of all long COVID clinics."

Please play along by replying and boosting:

I'm interested in the creative ways people approached pandemic work/events at first, particularly as seen on YouTube videos, but including TV/TikTok, etc.

I want to learn of more creative things I may have missed so let me know what your favorites were.

Mine was probably S1 of Staged, which I feel was a truly brilliant way to work within necessary public health strictures.

What were your favorites?

"Fur animals like minks and foxes are carnivorous mammals that ordinarily hunt in solitude. Caging them together in cramped quarters not only facilitates epidemics, it’s especially cruel."

Public opinion is turning against fur farms, and their role as a vector for #zoonosis and zoonotic #pandemic is becoming more and more clear. But politicians around the world and in both major US parties would rather massacre wild birds, and put humans at risk, than simply ban fur farms.

Obviously there are other factors: decrease in acute cases, inept official messaging, etc. But the need to fit in can feel overwhelming for people

I'm lucky not to feel this pressure much (always had a non-conformist streak) and these days am usually the only masked person in a crowd, e.g. at a large, packed theatre recently. Meanwhile, Covid keeps spreading, causing suffering, and disabling people

I've been wondering what (if anything) the Asch conformity experiments might tell us about Covid-era mask-wearing

A few people have told me they decided to stop wearing masks, even in busy indoor spaces, not based on assessing the risk to themselves or others but because they felt stupid or weird being such an outlier

Summary of those experiments on @wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asch_conformity_experiments

After several decades working in Pathology & 25 years at my current workplace, it is time for a change. Working in healthcare through the #pandemic was frankly exhausting & demoralising. So I'm planning my escape, & will spend the next couple of years doing some courses & volunteering in ecological/environmental surveying
